ਕਵਨ ਕਾਜ ਸਿਰਜੇ ਜਗ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਵਨ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

ਕਿਹੜੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਲਈ ਅਸੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ? ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਅਸਾਂ ਕੀਹ ਖੱਟਿਆ?

For what purpose were you created and brought into the world? What rewards have you received in this life?

ਭਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

ਅਸਾਂ ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਚਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਜੋ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਤਾਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਜੋ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਮਨ-ਇੱਛਤ ਫਲ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀਰਾ ਹੈ ।੧।

God is the boat to carry you across the terrifying world-ocean; He is the Fulfiller of the mind's desires. You have not centered your mind on Him, even for an instant. ||1||

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਹਮ ਐਸੇ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ॥

ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ

O Lord of the Universe, I am such a sinner!

ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਥਾ ਦੀਆ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਧੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਤੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

God gave me body and soul, but I have not practiced loving devotional worship to Him. ||1||Pause||

ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਤੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਅਪਬਾਦੁ ਨ ਛੂਟੈ ॥

(ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ!) ਪਰਾਏ ਧਨ (ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ), ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੀ ਕਾਮਨਾ), ਪਰਾਈ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ, ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਰੋਧ—ਇਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ,

Others' wealth, others' bodies, others' wives, others' slander and others' fights - I have not given them up.

ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਹੋਤੁ ਹੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਪਰਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥੨॥

ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ—ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਪਰ ਮਨ, ਪਰ ਤਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਲੰਮਾ ਝੇੜਾ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ।੨।

For the sake of these, coming and going in reincarnation happens over and over again, and this story never ends. ||2||

ਜਿਹ ਘਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਹੋਤ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੋ ਮੈ ਫੇਰਾ ॥

ਜਿਨ੍ਹੀਂ ਥਾਈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉੱਥੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਪਲਕ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਫੇਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ ।

That house, in which the Saints speak of the Lord - I have not visited it, even for an instant.

ਲੰਪਟ ਚੋਰ ਦੂਤ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਦਾ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥੩॥

ਪਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ, ਚੋਰ, ਬਦਮਾਸ਼, ਸ਼ਰਾਬੀ—ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਥ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।

Drunkards, thieves, and evil-doers - I constantly dwell with them. ||3||

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਤਸਰ ਏ ਸੰਪੈ ਮੋ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

ਕਾਮ, ਕੋ੍ਰਧ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਹੰਕਾਰ, ਈਰਖਾ—ਮੇਰੇ ਪੱਲੇ, ਬੱਸ! ਇਹੀ ਧਨ ਹੈ ।

Sexual desire, anger, the wine of Maya, and envy - these are what I collect within myself.

ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਏ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੪॥

ਦਇਆ, ਧਰਮ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ—ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ ।੪।

Compassion, righteousness, and service to the Guru - these do not visit me, even in my dreams. ||4||

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦਮੋਦਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਛਲ ਭੈ ਹਾਰੀ ॥

ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ—ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ! ਹੇ ਦਮੋਦਰ! ਹੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!

He is merciful to the meek, compassionate and benevolent, the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear.

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਭੀਰ ਜਨ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ॥੫॥੮॥

ਹੇ ਭੈ-ਹਰਨ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਬਿਪਤਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈ, ਮੈਂ (ਨਿੱਤ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਾਂ ।੫।੮।

Says Kabeer, please protect Your humble servant from disaster; O Lord, I serve only You. ||5||8||
