ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ । (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The Gurmukhs realize the Word of the Shabad; they are immersed in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord's Name.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The Guru has lit the brilliant light of spiritual wisdom, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled. ||2||
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਰਹੀ, ਉਹ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਛੁੱਟੜ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ
She is utterly lacking in spiritual wisdom; she is abandoned by her Husband Lord. She cannot obtain His Love.
ਅਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਵ‑ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ
In the darkness of intellectual ignorance, she cannot see her Husband, and her hunger does not depart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹ
By Guru's Grace, the Lord comes to abide in the mind, and the filth of egotism is dispelled.
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਜੇ) ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲ ਦੇਈਏ (ਤਾਂ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਸਮਝ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਹਉਮੈ-ਰੂਪ) ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ) ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Like a lamp lit in the darkness, the spiritual wisdom of the Guru dispels ignorance. ||2||
ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ (ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਭਾਵੇਂ) ਸਾਡੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ, ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੈ
Without destiny, the True Guru is not found, even though He sits within the home of our own inner being, always near and close at hand.
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ (ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ) ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
There is ignorance within, and the pain of doubt, like a separating screen.
ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲੋਭੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਲੋਭ ਦੀਆਂ) ਲਹਿਰ ਉੱਠਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
He is entangled in emotional attachment to his wife and sons, O my merchant friend, and deep within him, the waves of greed are rising up.
ਮਨੱੁਖ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅੱਖ ਝਮਕਣ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਸਮਾ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ
He has forgotten the Creator, his Lord and Master, and he does not meditate on Him, even for an instant.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਆਖ—(ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਹੀ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।
Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ) ਮੇਰਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ
My marriage has been performed, O my father. As Gurmukh, I have found the Lord.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਗਿਆਨ (-ਰੂਪ ਸੂਰਜ ਇਤਨਾ) ਤੇਜ਼ ਜਗ-ਮਗ ਕਰ ਉਠਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ
The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled. The Guru has revealed the blazing light of spiritual wisdom.
ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਸੈਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ੳੱੁਚੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ;
O man, when you were coiled in the cradle of the womb, upside-down, you were absorbed in meditation.
(ਤੈਨੂੰ ਤਦੋਂ) ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਦਿਨੇ ਰਾਤ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਸੈਂ), (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਅਣਹੋਂਦ ਸੀ
You took no pride in your perishable body; night and day were all the same to you-you lived unknowing, in the silence of the void.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ (ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਆਤਮਕ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
The Guru has applied the true ointment of spiritual wisdom to my eyes.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨ—ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
Deep within, the Divine Light has dawned, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled.
(ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦੀ । ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਫਰਿਆਦ ਕਰਾਂ ?
I can conceive of no other place; where could I go to lodge a complaint?
ਹੇ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਹੇ (ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਹੇ (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਉੱਚੇ ! ਹੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ! ਹੇ ਅਮਿੱਤ ਹਰੀ !
You are the Dispeller of ignorance, the Destroyer of darkness, O Lofty, Unfathomable and Unapproachable Lord.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ) ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।
The self-willed manmukhs, in their arrogant pride, do not find God; they are so ignorant and foolish!
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੇ (ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੇ ਭੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
They do not serve the True Guru, and in the end, they regret and repent, over and over again.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਦੀਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਬਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਲਗਨ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ,
In the darkness, the Guru has lit the lamp of the Guru's wisdom; I am lovingly focused on the Lord.
ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ (ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled, and my mind has been awakened; within the home of my inner being, I have found the genuine article. ||3||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਡੀ ਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਦੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
I am egotistical and conceited, and my intellect is ignorant. Meeting the Guru, my selfishness and conceit have been abolished.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਦੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
The illness of egotism is gone, and I have found peace. Blessed, blessed is the Guru, the Sovereign Lord King. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹ
Those who have the Carefree Lord abiding in their minds
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦੀ ।੨।
- no cares will ever bother them. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਹੀ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ ।
But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੀ (ਵਧੇਗਾ) ।੪।
In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ (ਹੋਰ ਵਰਤ-ਨੇਮ ਆਦਿਕ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪਕਿਆਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
They forget the Lord's Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਬਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, (ਜਦੋਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਚੰਦਨ (ਘਸਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਤੇ) ਛਿਣਕਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ।੧।
I was burning, on fire, and the Guru poured water on me; He is cooling and soothing, like the sandalwood tree. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਗਿਆਨ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ।੨।
The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled; the Guru has lit the lamp of spiritual wisdom. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਪਿਉ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜਨਮ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ), ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ।
The Divine Guru is my mother, the Divine Guru is my father; the Divine Guru is my Transcendent Lord and Master.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ (ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਹੈ ।
The Divine Guru is my companion, the Destroyer of ignorance; the Divine Guru is my relative and brother.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਬੇਫ਼ਿਕਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
The God-conscious being is carefree.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ (ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ) ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who takes pride in wealth and lands
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਬੜਾ ਜਾਹਿਲ ਹੈ ।
is a fool, blind and ignorant.
ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੇਖਹੁ,
Behold God near at hand, twenty-four hours a day.
ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਏਗੀ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ ।
Ignorance shall depart, and darkness shall be dispelled.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਗਿਆਨ (ਰੂਪ) ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Guru has given the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, and dispelled the darkness of ignorance.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
By the Lord's Grace, I have met the Saint; O Nanak, my mind is enlightened. ||1||
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ) ਸੁੱਝਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤੇ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਾਰੇ) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।
People do not see, and they do not understand; they do not reflect upon anything.
ਜਗਤ (ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The world is pierced through with attachment to tastes and pleasures, engrossed in ignorance.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ, ਓਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਬੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ (ਰੂਪ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ) ਦਾ ਠੱਗਿਆ (ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,)
One who does not obey the Hukam, the Command of the Perfect Guru - that self-willed manmukh is plundered by his ignorance and poisoned by Maya.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ (ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਉਹ) ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਖਸਮ ਨੇ (ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਝਗੜੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
Within him is falsehood, and he sees everyone else as false; the Lord has tied these useless conflicts around his neck.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਹੀਣ, ਖੋਟੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
The self-willed manmukh is ignorant, evil-minded and egotistical.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ (ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਜੂਏ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਲ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He is filled with anger within, and he loses his mind in the gamble.
ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਦਾਤ (ਦੇ ਮਿਲਣ) ਤੇ ਰੱਜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਤੇ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ ।
No matter what they are given, they are not satisfied; within their hearts there is great desire, ignorance and darkness.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਟੁੱਟਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, it is good to break away from the self-willed manmukhs, who have love and attachment to Maya. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ, ਸਿਮਰਨ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
So speak the Lord's Name, which shall emancipate you.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
By Guru's Grace, the jewel of the Lord is found; ignorance is dispelled, and the Divine Light shines forth. ||1||Pause||
(ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪ ਸਮਝਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He alone understands, whom the Lord Himself inspires to understand.
ਤੇ (ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
By Guru's Grace, one serves Him. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਹੋਏ ਗਿਆਨ-ਰਤਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਾਰੇ) ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
With the jewel of spiritual wisdom, total understanding is obtained.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਹੀ) ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
By Guru's Grace, ignorance is dispelled; one then remains wakeful, night and day, and beholds the True Lord. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਹੇ ਵੀਰ!) ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੁ
Join the Sat Sangat, the Lord's True Congregation; joining the Company of the Holy, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ) ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਰਤਨ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
With the sparkling jewel of spiritual wisdom, the heart is illumined, and ignorance is dispelled. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ) ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
My thirst, and the darkness of ignorance have been removed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਪ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
Serving the Holy Saints, countless sins are obliterated. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮਤਿ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ
I am foolish, stupid, ignorant and thoughtless;
(ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਿਰਦ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ), ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਬਿਰਦ-ਪਾਲ) ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਨ-ਆਏ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖੇਂਗਾ) ।੨।
Your Name is my mind's only hope. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਵੇਖੀਂ, ਕਿਤੇ ਇਹ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਬੈਠੀਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹਾਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮਾਣ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਰੱਖ ।
O mind, don't be so proud of yourself, as if you know it all; the Gurmukh is humble and modest.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਥ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ‘ਮੈਂ, ਮੈਂ’ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਮੈਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ।
Within the intellect are ignorance and ego; through the True Word of the Shabad, this filth is washed off.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ (ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਿਆ ।
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, pains are removed. Through the Name of the Lord, supreme peace is obtained.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਮਕ ਪਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਪਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ।
The spiritual wisdom of the True Guru illumines the heart; this Light dispels the darkness of spiritual ignorance.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਗੁਰੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ) ਲਿਖ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Those who have the blessed pre-ordained destiny of the Lord written on their foreheads, meet the True Guru, the Lord King.
(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The Guru removes the darkness of ignorance, and spiritual wisdom illuminates their hearts.
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਤੂੰ ਜੀਭ ਦੇ ਚਸਕੇ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You are intoxicated with greed, avarice and egotism; you are engrossed in self-conceit.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਇਹ ਜੀਵ-ਹਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕ ਸਕਦਾ ।੨।
O Nanak, like the deer, you are being destroyed by your ignorance; your comings and goings shall never end. ||2||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨ (ਰੂਪ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਬੜਾ ਭਾਰਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ
Emotional attachment to Maya is spiritual darkness; it is very difficult and such a heavy load.
ਜੇ ਬੜੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ (ਰੂਪ) ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਦੇ ਹੋਵੀਏ (ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਤਰ ਕੇ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ? (ਭਾਵ, ਇਸ ਮੋਹ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੁੱਕਾ ਬਚ ਕੇ ਲੰਘ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ) ।
Loaded with so very many stones of sin, how can the boat cross over?
ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ; ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖੋਟ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Deception and wickedness have departed from within him, and he easily conquers his mind.
ਉਹ ਸੌਖੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਇਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ (ਅੱਪੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਜੋਤਿ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
There, the Divine Light and the essence of bliss are manifest, and ignorance is eliminated.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਸਮਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਗਿਆਨ-ਰੂਪ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
O Nanak, the Gurmukh attains spiritual wisdom, and the pitch-black darkness of ignorance is dispelled.
ਉਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਕਰਤਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ) ਪੂਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।੧।
One who is blessed by the Perfect Lord's Grace - as Gurmukh, he meditates on the Lord's Name. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨ-ਹਨੇਰਾ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਦੇਣਹਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਬਖਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ ।
The Saints dispel the darkness of ignorance; the Guru is the Giver of the gift of life.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ (ਸੇਵਕ) ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ (ਸਾਂ, ਹੁਣ) ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
Granting His Grace, the Lord has made me His own; I was on fire, but now I am cooled. ||1||
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਨਣ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁੂ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ) ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The blind receive the Divine Light, when they merge with the Will of the True Guru.
ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਗਿਆਨ (ਰੂਪ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They break their bonds, and dwell in Truth, and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The Lord, the True Guru, the Lord, the True Guru - if only I could meet the Lord, the True Guru; His Lotus Feet are so pleasing to me.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ (ਦਾ) ਸੁਰਮਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ।
The darkness of my ignorance was dispelled, when the Guru applied the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom to my eyes.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The True Guru has applied the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom to my eyes, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled.
ਰਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ (ਭੀ) ਨਿਰੋਲ ਮੋਹ (ਰੂਪ) ਹਨ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ।
Riches and the supernatural spiritual powers of the Siddhas are all emotional attachments; through them, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, does not come to dwell in the mind.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨ (ਰੂਪ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ,
Serving the Guru, the mind becomes immaculately pure, and the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Everything is clear to one whose eyes are blessed with the ointment of spiritual wisdom.
ਪਰ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
In the darkness of spiritual ignorance, he sees nothing at all; he wanders around in reincarnation, over and over again. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਛਾਣਾਂ?
O mother, how can I see the Lord of the world?
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਤਾਂ) ਵੱਡੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਫਸਿਆ
In the utter darkness of emotional attachment and spiritual ignorance, my mind remains entangled. ||1||Pause||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
The self-willed manmukh does not serve the Lord's Name, and so he suffers in horrible pain.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਗਿਆਨ (-ਰੂਪ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ;
He is filled with the darkness of ignorance, and he does not understand anything.
Shalok, Fourth Mehl:
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲਿ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਦਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦਾ
He has spiritual ignorance within, and his intellect is dull and dim; he does not place his faith in the True Guru.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ) ਸਮਝਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ
You destroy millions of my sins, and teach me in so many ways.
ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਡੀ ਅਕਲ ਥੋੜੀ ਹੈ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੈ । (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।੨
I am so ignorant - I understand nothing at all. Please honor Your innate nature, and save me! ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪਰਵਾਰ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੀ ਅੱਗ (ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ
Family and worldly affairs are an ocean of fire.
ਭਟਕਣਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ—ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਘੱੁਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ।੧।
Through doubt, emotional attachment and ignorance, we are enveloped in darkness. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤਾਹੀਏਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ (ਕਦੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ
The rooms of the self-willed manmukhs are dark with ignorance; in their homes, the jewel is not visible.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ-ਸਪਣੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨
Those fools die, wandering in the wilderness, eating the poison of the snake, Maya. ||2||
ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਤੂੰ ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹੈਂ, ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹੈਂ, ਧਨ ਹੈਂ, ਸੁਹਜ ਹੈਂ
The Lord of the Universe is my existence, my breath of life, wealth and beauty.
ਜੀਵ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਡੁੱਬੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਲਈ) ਦੀਵਾ ਹੈਂ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The ignorant are totally intoxicated with emotional attachment; in this darkness, the Lord is the only lamp. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਚੋਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ, ਰਾਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ, ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ
The various sorts of pleasures, powers, joys, beauty, canopies, cooling fans and thrones to sit on
ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਛਤਰ ਚਉਰ, ਤੇ ਬੈਠਣ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਤਖ਼ਤ—ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਕੌਤਕ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹਨ ।੧।
- the foolish, ignorant and blind are engrossed in these things. O Nanak, desire for Maya is just a dream. ||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਵਕੀਲ ਬਣਿਆ ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ
Ignorance, doubt and suffering are dispelled, when the Guru becomes one's advocate.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮਜੀਠ ਨਾਲ (ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਪੱਕਾ) ਰੰਗ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਪੱਕੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਵਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The Lord's lotus feet have pierced my mind, and I am dyed in the deep crimson color of His Love.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ (ਐਸਾ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈ) ਕਿ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਾ ਭੀ ਫਲ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
He is the True Guru - service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding. By this service, the greatest treasure is obtained.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਨਾਂ (ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ) ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
The faithless cynics in their love of duality and sensual desires, harbor foul-smelling urges. They are totally useless and ignorant. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲ ਭਲੇ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ) ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ
The ignorant clown will never understand.
ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Again and again, he becomes engrossed in entanglements. ||1||Pause||
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Anger is the outcaste which hides within his body;
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਬੜਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ (ਦਿੱਸਦਾ) ।੩।
he is in the utter darkness of ignorance, and he does not understand. ||3||
ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੋਹ ਝੂਠ ਤੇ ਗੁਮਾਨ (ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ) ਹਨ ।
Into the body of the five elements, He infused attachment, falsehood and self-conceit.
ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The ignorant, self-willed manmukh comes and goes, wandering in reincarnation.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਗਿਆਨ-ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Shabad deep within the nucleus of the self dispels the darkness of ignorance.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Meeting with my Friend, the True Guru, I have obtained spiritual wisdom.
ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਬੜੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਬੇ ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ (ਪਰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਹਾਂ ।
I am foolish, idiotic and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, O Primal Being, O Lord beyond birth.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਸਾਡੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ, ਅਸੀ ਪੱਥਰ (-ਦਿਲ) ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੰਦ-ਭਾਗੀ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
Have Mercy upon me, and save me, O my Lord and Master; I am a lowly stone, with no good karma at all. ||1||
ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦਾ ਖੂਹ ਹੈ,
The world is a pit of poison,
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮੋਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
filled with the utter darkness of ignorance and emotional attachment.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੂਰਖ ਮਤਿ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ
The human body is unconscious, ignorant and blind.
(ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ-ਭਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ) ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ (ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
Without the Word of the Shabad, how can anyone cross over?
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਰੱਬੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The darkness of ignorance is dispelled, and the Divine Light radiantly shines forth.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is Nanak's only Support; he merges into the Lord's Name. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲਈਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਚਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।
Why forsake God, and attach yourself to another? Without the Lord, you cannot even live.
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਕੋਰੀ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੈੜੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The ignorant fool does not feel any shame; the evil man wanders around deluded.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਦੀਵਾ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled, with the light of the lamp of the Guru's wisdom. Servant Nanak lives by beholding the Lord.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਤੇਰਾ) ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਭਾਵੇਂ ਇਕ ਪਲ-ਭਰ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹੋਵੇ ।੧।
Let me behold Your face, for a moment, even an instant! ||1||
(ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Gurmukh beholds and speaks the Naam, the Name of the Lord; chanting the Naam, he finds peace.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ,ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਜੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, the spiritual wisdom of the Gurmukh shines forth; the black darkness of ignorance is dispelled. ||2||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗੀ ।
I do not know, Lord, what my condition shall be.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਹਾਂ, (ਪਰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ । ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਤੇ) ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Please, save my honor and my self-respect. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੱਡਾ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The source of all pain within is destroyed; I apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to my forehead. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
In an instant, He purifies the sinners, and dispels the darkness of ignorance. ||3||
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੀ ਭੱੁਲ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The doubt of ignorance is eradicated, and spiritual wisdom is obtained.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਧਰ ਵੇਖੀਏ ਓਧਰ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੩।
Nanak comes to gaze upon the One Lord alone; wherever he looks, there He is. ||3||
ਜੇ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਜਾਗਿਆ (ਸਮਝੋ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
My doubt was dispelled, and I woke up; the darkness of ignorance was dispelled.
ਜਿਸ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (-ਪਤੀ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ (ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ) ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੂਪ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ,
She who is in love with her Lord, is the most infinitely beautiful.
(ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਪ੍ਰੇਤ-ਜੂਨ ਹਨ ।
The ghost, in the body-cage, suffers all sorts of afflictions.
(ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਪ੍ਰੇਤ-ਜੂਨ ਹਨ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਪੇ੍ਰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ-ਪਿੰਜਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ) ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Those who are blind to spiritual wisdom, putrefy in hell.
ਉਹ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਸੇ੍ਰਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell in the mind.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੨।
The jewel of spiritual wisdom ever illumines the heart, and the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled. ||12||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਾੜਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Through the Shabad, the filth of egotism is burned away.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨ (ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨ-ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੭।
The mind becomes immaculate, and the jewel of spiritual wisdom brings enlightenment; the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled. ||7||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਕਹਿ ਲਵੋ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਸਾੜਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Spiritual ignorance and desire burn this human body.
ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He alone puts out this fire, who practices and lives the Guru's Shabad.
(ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਮਿਹਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।
When God grants His Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ-ਵੱਸਦੇ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The Shabad dispels the spiritual ignorance within, and through the True Guru, one finds peace. ||3||
(ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਗਿਆਨ-ਰਤਨ ਨਾਲ ਅਗਿਆਨ-ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Spiritual ignorance is eradicated, by the priceless jewel of the Guru.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ (ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ‘ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨ’ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੈ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੦।
The True Guru is the fantastically valuable jewel of spiritual wisdom; blessed by God's Mercy, peace is found. ||10||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
I am foolish and ignorant; I have no wisdom at all.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
From the True Guru, I have obtained understanding in my mind.
(‘ਦੂਜੇ ਭਰਮ’ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਕੇ) ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਣਾ—ਇਹੀ ਜਪ ਹੈ ਇਹੀ ਤਪ ਹੈ ਇਹੀ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਸਾਧਨ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ;
Deep within the self are meditation and austere self-discipline, when one realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਜੇ (‘ਦੂਜੇ ਭਰਮ’ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Meditating on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, egotism and ignorance are eliminated.
(ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ) ਹਿਰਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਲ ਨਕਾ-ਨਕ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ), (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ) ਚੱਖਿਆਂ ਸੁਆਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One's inner being is overflowing with Ambrosial Nectar; tasting it, the flavor is known.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, (ਇਹ ਗੁਰ-ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਅਭੀਚ (ਨਛੱਤ੍ਰ ਦਾ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਹੈ ।
To receive the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of the Guru, the True Guru, is to truly bathe at the Abhaijit festival.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਖੋਟੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇਸਮਝੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The filth of evil-mindedness is washed off, and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨ (-ਹਨੇਰਾ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
Blessed by the Guru's Darshan, spiritual ignorance is dispelled, and the Divine Light illuminates the inner being.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ । ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦਾ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukhs die, understanding nothing; they are enveloped by the darkness of evil-mindedness and ignorance.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰ-ਪਰਨੇ ਡੁੱਬ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦੇ ।੬।
They do not cross over the terrible world-ocean; without the Guru, they drown and die. ||6||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਭਰਮਾਂ-ਵਹਿਮਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੀਲੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਹੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ।
Practicing hypocrisy and superstition, people have grown weary of the effort, but still, deep within their hearts, they yearn for Maya, Maya.
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸੇ੍ਰਸ਼ਟ ਪੁਰਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
By the Grace of the Holy Person, I have met with the Lord, the Primal Being, and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਾਸਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ),
The self-willed manmukhs are stuck in doubt and attached to duality; the darkness of spiritual ignorance is within them.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ-ਭਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਨਾਹ ਉਰਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਾਰਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ (ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ।੪।
They do not see the True Guru, the Giver; they are not on this shore, or the other. ||4||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੈਸ਼ਨੋ ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ) ਛੇ ਕਰਮ ਭੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਮੈਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਲੋਭ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ
You call yourself a devotee of Vishnu and you practice the six rituals, but your inner being is polluted with greed.
(ਜੇ ਉਹ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
Those who slander the Society of the Saints, shall all be drowned in their ignorance. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਕੱਟੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।
I have cut away the darkness of ignorance and become immaculate; my discriminationg intellect has blossomed forth.
(ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਝੱਗ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਇਕ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
As the waves of water and the foam become water again, the Lord and His servant become One. ||1||
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
His Light shall radiate deep within your mind.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
With the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, ignorance is dispelled. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿੱਕ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
His Feet are enshrined within, in the Society of the Saints; the darkness of ignorance is dispelled.
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਚਿਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੋੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The heart is enlightened and illumined and enraptured; God has been found.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਹੈ, ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ ।
Attachment to Maya leads to the darkness of ignorance.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The self-willed manukhs are attached, foolish and ignorant.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਜੋ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Deep within, there is ignorance, suffering and doubt; through the spiritual wisdom of the Guru, they are eradicated.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He alone meditates on the Naam, whom You unite with Yourself, in Your Mercy.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ; ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਉੱਠ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The house of ignorance, doubt and pain is destroyed,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ
for those within whose hearts the Guru's Feet abide. ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਜਿਹੜਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦਾਸ (ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Wandering and roaming, slave Nanak has come to the Sanctuary of the Saints.
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੰਢਾਂ) ਕੱਟੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।੪।੨੩।
The bonds of ignorance, doubt, emotional attachment and the love of Maya have been cut; God hugs me close in His Embrace. ||2||4||23||
(ਕਦੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ) ਸੰਵਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੂਝ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨੀਂਦ ਤੋਂ) ਜਗਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Attached to ignorance, people are falling asleep; attached to the Guru's spiritual wisdom, they awaken.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ) ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।੧।
O Nanak, by His Will, He makes us walk as He pleases. ||8||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਾਂ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Those who are totally in love with Maya, Maya, shall rot away in Maya.
(ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਇਕ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਰਸਤਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (-ਰੂਪ) ਭਾਰ ਨਾਲ (ਸਦਾ) ਲੱਦਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੭।
The path of ignorance and darkness is utterly treacherous; they are loaded down with the crushing load of egotism. ||7||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰੋ ।
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my Siblings of Destiny.
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
All sickness and sin shall be erased; your mind shall be rid of the darkness of ignorance. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰਾਇਆ ਧਨ ਖੋਂਹਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਨੇ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
He runs around in the ten directions, for the sake of the great poison of corruption. He steals the wealth of others, and in the end, he is destroyed by his own ignorance.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Without spiritual wisdom, the people worship ignorance.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਵਰਤਣ-ਵਿਹਾਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਹੈ ।੨੨।
They grope in the darkness, in the love of duality. ||22||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਕਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਣਾ ਪਏਗਾ), (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਭੀ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ।
The mortal being does not understand the comings and goings of reincarnation; he does not see the Court of the Lord.
ਤੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ ।
He is wrapped up in emotional attachment and Maya, and within his being is the darkness of ignorance.
