ਨਿੱਕੇ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਬਾਲ (ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੋਤਰੇ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਮਨੱੁਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ) ਮੋਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ (ਕਿ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ)
Gazing upon the tiny bodies of your children, love has welled up within your heart; you are proud of them, but you do not understand.
ਅੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਦਿੱਸਣੋਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਮਨੱੁਖ) ਹੋਰ ਜੀਊਣ ਲਈ ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
You long for the dignity of a long life, but your eyes can no longer see anything.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।
Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord's Court.
ਕੂੜੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਗਵਾ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is lost.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Continuously, day and night, they are gripped by greed and deluded by doubt.
ਉਹ ਉਸ ਵੇਗਾਰੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਬਿਗਾਨਾ) ਭਾਰ ਚੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਵੇਗਾਰ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The slaves labor in slavery, carrying the loads upon their heads.
ਉੱਚੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ।
or in lofty mansions casting beautiful shadows.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
In fraud and greed, this human life is being wasted. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Greed, falsehood, corruption and emotional attachment entangle the blind and the foolish.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
Bound down by Maya, O Nanak, a foul odor clings to them. ||1||
(ਸਾਧਾਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
The afflictions of greed, falsehood and corruption abide in this body.
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, O Nanak, the Gurmukh abides in peace. ||1||
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਲਿੱਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਨਾਮ ਤਂੋ ਛੁਟ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ
The self-willed manmukh is occupied with greed all day long, although he may claim otherwise.
(ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਨੀਂਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਘੁੱਟਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਨੌ ਹੀ ਇੰਦਰੇ ਢਿੱਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
At night, he is overcome by fatigue, and all his nine holes are weakened.
(ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਲਾਲਚ ਨਾਲ ਲਿੱਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਦਾ (ਭਟਕਦਾ) ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੀ ਭਲੇ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।
Filled with greed, he constantly wanders around; he does not do any good deeds.
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, the Lord abides within the mind of one who meets with the Guru. ||2||
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਕਿਸੇ) ਬਾਂਦਰ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ (ਭੁੱਜੇ) ਛੋਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮੁੱਠ ਆਈ, ਪਰ ਲੋਭੀ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਨੇ (ਕੁੱਜੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੱਥ ਫਸਿਆ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਛੋਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮੁੱਠ) ਨਾਹ ਛੱਡੀ, (ਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਆ ਗਿਆ,
Like the monkey with a handful of grain, who will not let go because of greed
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਲੋਭ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕੰੰਮ ਜੀਵ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੁੜ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ-ਰੂਪ ਜ਼ੰਜੀਰ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ) ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
- just so, all the deeds committed in greed ultimately become a noose around one's neck. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਥੇ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਮਸੂਲੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਪੱਤਣ ਹੈ (ਜਿਥੇ ਜਮ-ਮਸੂਲੀਏ ਕੀਤੇ ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਤਾੜਨਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)
That place, where the greedy toll-collector dwells
ਉਹ ਰਸਤਾ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਪਰੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
- that path remains far removed from the Lord's humble servant. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਭੈੜਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਦੋਂ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਦੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Renouncing false greed, one comes to realize the Truth.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਲੀਨ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
So let yourself be absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and know this supreme realization. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵੋ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵਹੁ । ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆਂ) ਭਾਰੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
So renounce greed - you are blind! Greed only brings pain.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਲਾਲਚ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੫।
When the True Lord dwells within the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered. ||5||
(ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਚਿੱਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਮਿਲੇ । ਜੇ ਇਹ ਦਾਨ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The gift I seek is the dust of the feet of the Saints; if I were to obtain it, I would apply it to my forehead.
(ਹੋਰ) ਲਾਲਚ, ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ,
Renounce false greed, and meditate single-mindedly on the unseen Lord.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਭਟਕਦਿਆਂ ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਧਨ ਭੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ।
I wandered through countless incarnations, but mind, body and wealth never remain stable.
ਲੋਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ-ਰੂਪ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ, ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Attached to, and stained by the poisons of sexual desire and greed, the mind has forgotten the jewel of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਝੂਠੇ-ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆਂ (ਫਸੇ ਹੀ ਰਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਲਾਲਚ ਦਾ) ਨਾਹ ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਪਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ।
They are attached to false greed; they are not on this shore, nor on the one beyond.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਇਸ (ਲਾਲਚ-ਰੂਪ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; the Creator Lord unites them with Himself. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਦਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ।
He is filled with longing for Maya, O Beloved, and so the Lord does not ever come into his mind.
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
Those who forget You, O Supreme Lord Master, their bodies turn to dust.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਾਂਦਾ?
Why do you not sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, you ignorant fool?
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।੧।
You are attached to false greed, and you do not even consider death. ||1||
(ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਰਤ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
In fraud and greed, people are engrossed and entangled.
(ਇਸ ਲਾਲਚ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੪।
The Gurmukh is emancipated, practicing Truth. ||14||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ (ਲੱਗ ਕੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ) ਜੀਵਨ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukh wastes away his life in worthless greed and falsehood.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, the Lord forgives, and blends them with Himself; through the True Word of the Shabad, He is ever-present. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ । ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜਦਿਆਂ ਭੱਜਦਿਆਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ (ਅਜਾਈਂ) ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Attached to greed, you have forgotten the Naam. Coming and going, your life has been ruined.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮ ਅਚਨਚੇਤ ਆ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਪਟਕਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਰੇਗਾ, ਕਾਲ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਤੈਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕੇਗੀ ।੩।
When the Messenger of Death grabs you by your hair, you will be punished. You are unconscious, and have fallen into Death's mouth. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
This mind wanders around, driven by greed, totally attached to greed.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਕੂੜੇ ਧੰਧੇ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੱਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
He is engrossed in false pursuits; he shall endure beatings in the City of Death. ||3||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਦਿੱਸਦੇ) ਹਨ ।
Practice Truth - other greed and attachments are useless.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਵੱਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ) ਜੀਭ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ (ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ) ਹੈ । (ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਰਸ (ਖਿੱਚੀ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਪਾਂਦਾ) ।
The True Lord has fascinated this mind, and my tongue enjoys the taste of Truth.
ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The Lord's slave renounces greed and attachment, and obtains the Lord's Name.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਏਂ ।੮।੪।
If You forgive him, Lord, then He is united with You; Nanak is a sacrifice. ||8||4||
ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ।
Meditate on the Lord - concentrate deep within your being and meditate on Him.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹੁ ਜੋ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਹਸਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) । ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਏਂਗਾ ।੧।
Renounce your greed, and merge with the infinite Lord. In this way, you shall find the door of liberation. ||1||
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਇਤਨਾ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਿਟਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।
He collects the wealth of the Lord's Name, and all his thirst is quenched.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ (ਲਾਲਚਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਸਦਾ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
He renounces worldly greed, and his inner being is lovingly attuned to the Lord.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਗਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
Clinging to greed, you have wasted your life, deluded in the doubt of Maya.
ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਣ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਦਾ, (ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ) ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਵਾਂਗ ਗਲ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ ।੧।
Do not take pride in your wealth and youth; you shall crumble apart like dry paper. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ (ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਜਨਮ-ਮਨੋਰਥ) ।
The mortal came to hear and chant the Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਪਰ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
But he has forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and he has become attached to other temptations. His life is totally worthless! ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਹੈ, ਮੂਰਖ ਠੇਡੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਜੂਏ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ) ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੪।
Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||
ਝੂਠ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਣ ਨਾਲ (ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਕੁਝ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਬੀ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ (ਫਲ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ।੧੫।
O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਜੰਜਾਲ-ਰੂਪ ਚੋਰ ਨੇ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਉਂ ਵਿਲੂੰ ਵਿਲੂੰ ਕਰਦੇ) ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੀੜੇ ।
They are maggots in manure, plundered by the thief of worldly entanglements.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਹ ਭੁੱਲੇ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ ।੨।
O Nanak, never forget the Naam; greed for anything else is false. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Gurmukh is lovingly attuned to the Name of the Lord.
ਉਹ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਸਦਾ ।
He does not cling to false greed.
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ,ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Kabeer, the mortal does not remember the Lord; he wanders around, engrossed in greed.
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ (ਭਾਗ-ਹੀਣ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ , ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਅਚਨਚੇਤ ਉਮਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨੨੧।
Committing sins, he dies, and his life ends in an instant. ||221||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਯਕੀਨ ਬੱਝ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ;
Those humble beings who have this faith in their hearts, are awarded the highest status.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਲੋਭ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ।
They forsake Maya, emotional attachment and greed; they are rid of the frustrations of possessiveness, sexual desire and anger.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ) ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and become attached to greed and fraud,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ (ਬਲਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ।
are engrossed in the entanglements of Maya the enticer, with the fire of desire within them.
