ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਲੇਪਨ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਉਤੇ (ਤਾਂ) ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ;

You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

(ਬਾਹਰ) ਗੋਦੜੀ ਤੇ ਝੋਲੀ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਦੇ ਕਈ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਇਸ ਭੇਖ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;

You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ, (ਨਿਰਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਹੀ (ਬਣਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ) ਹੈ;

You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਹੈ, ਮੂਰਖ ਠੇਡੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ;

Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਜੂਏ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ) ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੪।

Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||
