(ਇਹ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਮ (ਹੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
With the mind encircled by wickedness and evil, people do evil deeds.
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਪੂਜਾ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਜ਼ਾ (ਹੀ) ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ
The ignorant worship the love of duality; in the Lord's Court they shall be punished.
ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੱੁਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ (ਰਲ ਕੇ) ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
misbehaves in the company of the wicked shaaktas, the faithless cynics;
ਉਸ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਅਤਿ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵੱਢ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
he wastes this human body, so difficult to obtain. In his ignorance, he tears up his own roots. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
are attached to duality; they wander around deluded.
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ) ਰਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੫।
The ignorant and blind people do not know the way; they come and go in reincarnation over and over again. ||5||
ਜੇਹੜੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
Thse who are in love with duality forget You.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।੨।
The ignorant, self-willed manmukhs are consigned to reincarnation. ||2||
ਉਹ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ (ਭੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਖਚਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He babbles on and on, but he is infatuated with Maya.
(ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ) ਕਦੇ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।੨।
Blind and ignorant, he shall never be reformed. ||2||
(ਜੇ) ਸ਼ਾਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੋਈ ਅਮਾਨਤ ਮੋੜ ਲਏ,
If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,
ਤਾਂ (ਇਹ) ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੋਸਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
the ignorant person shows his anger.
(ਇਸ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਵਿਚ) ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ ਹਨ ।
Many millions become self-centered.
ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਪੁੱਜ ਕੇ ਜਾਹਿਲ ਹਨ;
Many millions are blinded by ignorance.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਾਰਸ ਬਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without becoming the philosopher's stone, he does not inspire others to worship the Lord; without instructing his own mind, how can he instruct others?
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੩।
The ignorant, blind man calls himself the guru, but to whom can he show the way? ||3||
ਫਿਟੇ-ਮੂੰਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਨੂੰ, ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਪ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੇੜਦੇ ਹਨ
Cursed is the life of those who forsake and throw away the peace of the Lord's Name, and suffer pain instead by practicing ego and sin.
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਜਾਹਲ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।
The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in the love of Maya; they have no understanding at all.
Third Mehl:
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਾਹਲ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖੋਟ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਠ (ਭਾਵ, ਅੰਦਰਲੇ ਖੋਟ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ) ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਹੋਰ)
Within the ignorant self-willed manmukh is deception; with his tongue, he speaks lies.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਰੂਪ ਕਿਲੇ੍ਹ ਵਿਚ ਕੂੜ ਤੇ ਕੁਸੱਤ-ਰੂਪ ਕਰੜੇ ਫਾਟਕ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ
Within the fortress of body, are the hard and rigid doors of falsehood, deception and pride.
ਪਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ।
Deluded by doubt, the blind and ignorant self-willed manmukhs cannot see them.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
One who remembers the Lord is a spiritual teacher; the ignorant one acts blindly.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਹੋ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, whatever one does in this world, determines what he shall receive in the world hereafter. ||1||
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ (ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਭੁੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ
He does not appreciate the value of the Shabad; the fool wanders in corruption and sin.
ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ (ਹੋਰ) ਬਹੁਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਰਮ—ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ) ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ।
The blind and ignorant perform all sorts of ritualistic actions; they are in love with duality.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
He is the Assayer of jewels; He contemplates the jewel.
ਪਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ
He is ignorant and totally blind - he does not appreciate the value of the jewel.
ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਅਸੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ
I am blind, ignorant and totally without wisdom; how can I walk on the Path?
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਾ, ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਅਸੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਸਕੀਏ ।੪।੧।
I am blind - O Guru, please let me grasp the hem of Your robe, so that servant Nanak may walk in harmony with You. ||4||1||
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਲੋਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Those whose minds are attached to greed and corruption forget the Lord, the good Lord God.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਮੰਦੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ (ਉੱਘੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਮਝ ਲਵੋ) ।੩।
Those self-willed manmukhs are called foolish and ignorant; misfortune and bad destiny are written on their foreheads. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ) ।
I am worthless, foolish, thoughtless and ignorant. I know nothing about good actions and righteous living.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, (ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ) ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ, ਅਤੇ (ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਰਹੇ ।੪।੬।੫੩।
Take pity on Nanak, that he may sing Your Glorious Praises; and that Your Will may seem sweet to him. ||4||6||53||
ਹੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ! ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਲੀਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ,
The five thieves stand over your head and seize you. Grabbing you by your hair, they will drive you on.
ਤੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ ।੩।
You do not see them, you blind and ignorant fool; intoxicated with ego, you just keep sleeping. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ) ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਅੰਞਾਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਦਇਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
Even utterly foolish, ignorant and thoughtless persons have been saved by the Kind Lord.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।੧।੧੨੬।
Says Nanak, I have met the Perfect Guru; my comings and goings have ended. ||2||1||126||
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਪਰਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਤਿਆਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ (ਹੀ) ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One who forsakes the peace of the Lord in exchange for straw, and forgets the Naam, suffers in pain.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਹ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਦਾ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are blind. They are born, only to die again, and continue coming and going.
(ਇਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲੇਖੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ
Using a limited number of words, we describe the unlimited True Lord.
(ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਪਰ ਜੋ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਰਣਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ) ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੈ ਮਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ (ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਗਣਤ ਹੈ) ।
The ignorant lack understanding. Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom.
ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਾਣ-ਹੰਢਾਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਗੱਲ ਪੁੱਜ ਨ ਆਵੇ,
But on that day when they receive nothing, then they start to curse.
ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਨਿਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਝੁਲਕਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।
The self-willed manmukhs are ignorant and blind; they do not know the secrets of the soul.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਕੁਲ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਦਾਸੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ‘ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ’ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਬੀਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
Abandoning the Lord, the Support of the earth, you serve her of lowly ancestry, and you pass you life acting egotistically.
ਹੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਫੋਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ) ਤੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਅਖਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ।੨।
You do useless deeds, you ignorant person; this is why you are called a blind, self-willed manmukh. ||2||
ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ
He believes that the false thing is true.
ਹੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ! ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ! ਤੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਲ
The ignorant fool falls in love with it.
(ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵਧਾਈਆਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
At birth, the congratulations pour in;
ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਲੋਕ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
the ignorant sing songs of joy.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਨਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ।
Thay alone are acceptable, upon whom He bestows His Glance of Grace.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਹਰੇਕ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The Gurmukh attains spiritual wisdom, and understands everything. The ignorant ones act blindly. ||2||
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ (ਕਮਾਣ) ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ (ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਘੱਟ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਖਿੱਝਦੇ ਹਨ ।
For the sake of Maya, he reads and recites and argues.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਵੇਦ-ਪਾਠੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਦੁੱਤਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੧੪।
The ignorant and blind person is filled with filth within. How can he cross over the impassable world-ocean? ||14||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ) ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ (ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਹੋਇਆ) ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ (ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The ignorant and blind cling to all sorts of rituals.
ਪਰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ (ਅਜਿਹੇ) ਕਰਮ (ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They stubborn-mindedly perform these rituals, and are consigned to reincarnation.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੇ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The blind and ignorant are attached to duality.
ਉਹ ਬਦ-ਕਿਸਮਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The unfortunates are drowned without water, and die.
(ਪਰ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਭੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਾਥ ਟੁੱਟਣਾ ਹੈ) ।
The blind and ignorant do not understand, that the sword of death is hanging over their heads.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਪਾਣ ਦੀ ਉਕਾਈ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
By Guru's Grace, those who drink in the sublime essence of the Lord are saved.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ (ਮੂਰਤੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਫੁੱਲ ਤੋੜਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਹਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ-ਬੇਸਮਝ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ।
The ignorant and the blind wander deluded by doubt; deluded and confused, they pick flowers to offer to their idols.
ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਬੇ-ਜਾਨ (ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਪੂਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਮਾਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਥੇ ਟੇਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ । (ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
They worship lifeless stones and serve the tombs of the dead; all their efforts are useless. ||3||
ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ।
The ignorant person does not meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe; he thinks that this body is permanent.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੁਰਲੱਭ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਨਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੪।
This precious body is saved and redeemed in the Sanctuary of the Holy, O Nanak,
