(ਹੇ ਜੋਗੀ !) ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ ਬਣਾਵੇ, ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨੂੰ ਖੱਪਰ ਤੇ ਝੋਲੀ, ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਸੁਆਹ (ਪਿੰਡੇ ਤੇ ਮਲੇਂ),
Make contentment your ear-rings, humility your begging bowl, and meditation the ashes you apply to your body.
ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਭਉ) ਤੇਰੀ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਨੂੰ ਡੰਡਾ ਬਣਾਵੇਂ (ਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੂੜ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ ਟੁੱਟ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ)।
Let the remembrance of death be the patched coat you wear, let the purity of virginity be your way in the world, and let faith in the Lord be your walking stick.
ਗੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਚੱਜੀਆਂ (ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਆਚਰਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ
We are good at talking, but our actions are bad.
ਮਨੋਂ ਖੋਟੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ (ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੀਆਂ
Mentally, we are impure and black, but outwardly, we appear white.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਬੜੇ ਸੰੁਦਰ, ਚੰਗੀ ਕੁਲ ਵਾਲੇ, ਸਿਆਣੇ, ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਤੇ ਧਨਵਾਨ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ ਹੋਣ, ਪਰ,
He may be very handsome, born into a highly respected family, very wise, a famous spiritual teacher, prosperous and wealthy;
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੁਰਦੇ ਹੀ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਾ ਵਾਲੇ) ।੧।
but even so, he is looked upon as a corpse, O Nanak, if he does not love the Lord God. ||1||
ਜੇ ਨੰਗੇ ਫਿਰਦਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
If Yoga could be obtained by wandering around naked,
ਤਾਂ ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
then all the deer of the forest would be liberated. ||1||
ਨੰਗੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਕੀਹ ਸੌਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਤੇ ਚੰਮ ਲਪੇਟਿਆਂ ਕੀਹ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ?
What does it matter whether someone goes naked, or wears a deer skin,
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਜਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਤੀ ਸਦਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਭੀ (ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ।
Some control their sexual energy, and are known as celibates.
(ਜਤੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਹੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੬।
But without the Guru's Word, they are not saved, and they wander in reincarnation. ||6||
(ਇਹ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ) ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੱਕ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਗੇਰੂਏ ਰੰਗ ਦੀ ਧੋਤੀ (ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ)
The sacred marks are on their foreheads, and the saffron loin-cloths are around their waists;
ਪਰ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ, (ਮਾਨੋ) ਛੁਰੀ ਫੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਵੱਸ ਲਗਦਿਆਂ) ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
in their hands they hold the knives - they are the butchers of the world!
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਾਰਸ ਬਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without becoming the philosopher's stone, he does not inspire others to worship the Lord; without instructing his own mind, how can he instruct others?
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੩।
The ignorant, blind man calls himself the guru, but to whom can he show the way? ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਊਣ ਦੀ ਠੀਕ ਜਾਚ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਤੇ
O Nanak, meeting the True Guru, one comes to know the Perfect Way.
ਹੱਸਦਿਆਂ ਖੇਡਦਿਆਂ ਖਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਪਹਿਨਦਿਆਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇ ਰਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਵੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
While laughing, playing, dressing and eating, he is liberated. ||2||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਭੇਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Some wander around the forests, wearing religious robes, but the Fascinating Lord remains distant from them. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਹਿਣ ਸੁਣਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੀਤ ਭੀ ਗਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਗੁਣ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
They talk, preach, and sing their lovely songs, but within their minds, the filth of their sins remains. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪਖੰਡੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਂ ਠੱਗੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ) ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ।
In his heart there is deception, and yet in his mouth are words of wisdom.
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਾਣੀ ਰਿੜਕਣ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ।੧।
You are false - why are you churning water? ||1||
ਇਹ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ) ਸਮਾ (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟਣ ਤੇ ਨੱਕ ਫੜਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਢਬਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ।
No, no, this is not the time, when people know the way to Yoga and Truth.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ (ਭੀ) ਗੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਗਤ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਡੱੁਬਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
The holy places of worship in the world are polluted, and so the world is drowning. ||1||
ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਅੰਗੂਠੇ ਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਉਂਗਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਨੱਕ ਫੜਦੇ ਹਨ (ਸਮਾਧੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਤਿੰਨੇ ਹੀ ਲੋਕ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,
They close off their nostrils with their fingers, and claim to see the three worlds.
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਪਿੱਠ ਪਿਛੇ ਪਈ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ । ਇਹ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਪਦਮ ਆਸਨ ਹੈ ।੨
But they cannot even see what is behind them. What a strange lotus pose this is! ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਰੱਬ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੂਰ ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਬਹਿਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ?
Why do you speak such nonsense?
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਬਹਿਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਢੰਢੋਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
One who has found the Lord, keeps quiet about it. ||1||Pause||
ਕਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਕਈ ਚੇਲੇ ਭੀ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ ।
I have had so many gurus and disciples.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਤਦ ਤਕ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਜਦ ਤਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਲਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
Through a false guru, liberation is not found.
(ਅਸਲੀ) ਨਾਸਤਕ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨਾਹ ਮੰਨਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਵੇ
He alone is a Paakhandi, who cleanses his body of filth.
(ਭਾਵ, ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਵੇ), ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਬੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The fire of his body illuminates God within.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
One who himself has drowned - how can he carry anyone else across?
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਤੀ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਠਿੱਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਆਪ ਭੀ ਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
One who is imbued with the Love of the Husband Lord - O Nanak, he himself is saved, and he saves others as well. ||1||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਤਵੀਤ ਤੇ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ-ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਵਿਚ) ਵੇਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਹਨਤ ਹੈ
Cursed are the lives of those who read and write the Lord's Name to sell it.
Their crop is devastated - what harvest will they have?
(ਉਂਝ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਪੀਰ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਰੋਟੀ ਦਰ ਦਰ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
One who calls himself a guru or a spiritual teacher, while he goes around begging
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਭੀ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।
