(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ;
He Himself is Maya, and He Himself is the Illusion.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ।
He Himself has generated emotional attachment throughout the entire universe.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਸਾਵਣ (ਦੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ) ਵਿਚ ਬੱਦਲ (ਵਰ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ) ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ (ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ) ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
In the month of Saawan, the clouds of Ambrosial Nectar hang over the world.
(ਉਸ ਬੱਦਲ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੋਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ) ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
The peacock of the mind chirps, and receives the Word of the Shabad, in its mouth;
ਘਰ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਮਝਣ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਹੈ ।
There is no happiness in owning one's own home, in all of Maya,
ਉੱਚੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ।
or in lofty mansions casting beautiful shadows.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਅਚੱਲ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ।
His Mansion is eternal and unchanging; it is not a mere reflection of Maya.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੮।
Through truth and contentment, doubt is dispelled. ||8||
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਬੈਠੇ,
People fall in love with the shade of the tree,
ਉਹ ਛਾਂ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
and when it passes away, they feel regret in their minds.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਵੇਖੀਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਹੈ);
It is like the shadow of a tree;
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਦੱਸੋ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ? (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਮਾਣ?) ।੨।
when the breath of life passes out of the mortal being, tell me, what becomes of his wealth? ||2||
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਵੇਖੀ ।
Among all lights, I behold Your Form; all the worlds are Your Maya.
(ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਝਗੜੇ-ਰੂਪ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਵਿਚੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਬਿੰਬ ਵਾਂਗ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਭੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Among the tumults and forms, He sits in serene detachment; He bestows His Glance of Grace upon those who are engrossed in the illusion. ||3||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
I have seen that the whole world is engrossed in Maya.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ
O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||17||
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਤਨਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਰੱੁਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕਾ ਘਰ ਮੰਨ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ,
Believing the shade of the tree to be permanent, he builds his house beneath it.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਲ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ) ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਤੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿੱਖਾ (ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਤੀਰ ਕੱਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।੨।
But the noose of death is around his neck, and Shakti, the power of Maya, has aimed her arrows at him. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੀਵ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਕਰੇ? ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਅਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
Chhachha: Ignorance exists within everyone; doubt is Your doing, O Lord.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਬਚਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਤੇ ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਭੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ) ।੧੦।
Having created doubt, You Yourself cause them to wander in delusion; those whom You bless with Your Mercy meet with the Guru. ||10||
ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਰੱਬ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਜੀਵ ‘ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ’ (ਕੂਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਤਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਇਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਰਭਾਵ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
In ego they love Maya, and in ego they are kept in darkness by it.
ਰੱਬ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Living in ego, mortal beings are created.
ਤਦੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੀ, ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਸੀ, ਨਾਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਸੀ, ਨਾਹ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਸੀ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸੀ ।
There is no intoxication of Maya there, and no shadow, nor the infinite light of the sun or the moon.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਅੱਖ, ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਰ ਲੈ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ।੩।
The eyes within the mind which see everything - with one glance, they see the three worlds. ||3||
ਜੀਵ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ) ਧਨ ਤੇ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਅੱਕ (ਦੇ ਬੂਟੇ) ਦੀ ਛਾਂ (ਵਰਗੇ ਹੀ) ਹਨ, ਜਦੋਂ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਧਨ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਸਾਥ ਤੋੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ।
Wealth and youth are like the shade of the bitter swallow-wort plant; you are growing old, and your days are coming to their end.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਅਭਾਗਣ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਛੱੁਟੜ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕੂੜੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you shall end up as a discarded, divorced bride; your own falsehood shall separate you from the Lord. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕ ਛਲਾਵਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਕਈ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਖਾ ਕੇ ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਗੁੰਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
O my mother, Maya is so misleading and deceptive.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਇਤਨੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ) ਕੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ, ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਹੈ, (ਦਰਿਆ ਦੇ) ਹੜ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ ।ਰਹਾਉ।
Without meditating on the Lord of the Universe, it is like straw on fire, or the shadow of a cloud, or the running of the flood-waters. ||Pause||
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਵਿਚ ਅਡੋਲ-ਆਤਮਾ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ।
She is filled with virtuous joy, and is totally pleased, when she is ravished and enjoyed by her Lord, and imbued with His Love.
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਔਗੁਣ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ
Her faults and demerits are eradicated, and she roofs her home with virtue, through the Perfect Lord, the Architect of Destiny.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਿਆ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਸੜਨ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਈ,
God, the King, has given me shade under His canopy, and the fire of desire has been totally extinguished.
ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੱਡਾ ਹੀ ਢਹਿ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ।
The home of sorrow and sin has been demolished, and all affairs have been resolved.
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਓ! ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
Chant, and meditate on the One God, who permeates and pervades the many beings of the whole Universe.
(ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦਾ) ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪ ਕੇ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
God created it, and God spreads through it everywhere. Everywhere I look, I see God.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਣ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The Lord Himself has stood up to resolve the affairs of the Saints; He has come to complete their tasks.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ (ਕਾਂਇਆਂ-) ਧਰਤੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ (ਹਿਰਦਾ) ਤਲਾਬ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The land is beautiful, and the pool is beautiful; within it is contained the Ambrosial Water.
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਹਵਾਈ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣ ਦਾ ਸਾਧਨ ਹੈ, ਠਗ-ਨੀਰਾ ਹੈ, ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਹੈ ।
Maya is a mirage, which deludes the mind, O my companion, like the scent-crazed deer, or the transitory shade of a tree.
ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਟਿਕ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਇਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਥ) ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Maya is fickle, and does not go with you, O my companion; in the end, it will leave you.
ਇਹ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ,
From the three qualities, the one mechanism of Maya was produced.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ) ਇਹ ਬੜੀ ਡਾਢੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਛਾਵਾਂ ਹੈ।
The great Maya is only His shadow.
ਧਰਤੀ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਨਾਲ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਘਰ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਪਰਗਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
He has made His home in the monastery of the heart; He has infused His power into the earth and the sky. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ (ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ (ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ) ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Through the Word of the Shabad, the Gurmukhs have saved so very many, O Saints. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਗੁਪਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਇਸ ਥੋਥੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਸਾਥ ਤੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਬਾਹੁੰਦੀ) ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
Maya is empty and petty; she has defrauded the world.
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਇਹੀ) ਕਿਰਤ-ਰੂਪ ਲੇਖ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ ਲੇਖ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ) ।
Such destiny is pre-ordained by past actions.
ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਸੀਤਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਠੰਡ-ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੇ)?
"The moon of the mind is cool and dark; how is it enlightened?
ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਤਪਾਇਆ ਤਪਦਾ ਰਹੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਵੇਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇ)?
How does the sun blaze so brilliantly?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ‘ਸ਼ਬਦ’ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਜੋ ਤਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਇਥੇ ਉਥੇ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Shabad is the Guru, to carry you across the terrifying world-ocean. Know the One Lord alone, here and hereafter.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ‘ਸ਼ਬਦ’ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ‘ਸ਼ਬਦ’ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਚਿਹਨ ਤੇ ਵਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵੱਖਰਾ-ਪਨ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੫੯।
He has no form or color, shadow or illusion; O Nanak, realize the Shabad. ||59||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ (ਛਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਫਿੱਕੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
The pleasures of Maya fade away in an instant, like the shade of a passing cloud.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਉਹ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਗਏ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ) ।੩।
They alone are dyed in the deep crimson of the Lord's Love, who meet the Guru, and sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਛੇਤੀ ਬਦਲਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਵਾ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਡਾ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ) ।
Like the shade of a tree, these things shall pass away, like the clouds blown away by the wind.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ । ਇਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ।੨।੨।੨੫।
Meeting with the Holy, devotional worship to the Lord is implanted within; O Nanak, only this shall work for you. ||2||2||25||
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ) ਰਜੋ ਤਮੋ ਤੇ ਸਤੋ (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਬਣੇ ।
Your Power is diffused through the three gunas: raajas, taamas and satva.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਤੇ ਮਰਨਾ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ, ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Through egotism, they suffer the pains of birth and death.
(ਅਸਲ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੈ) ਜਗਤ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਛਾਵਾਂ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਚਾਹੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਪਰਛਾਵੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੁੰਮ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
The world is a reflection of Him; He has no father or mother.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਪਿਉ ਨਾਹ ਮਾਂ, ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਭੈਣ ਨਾਹ ਭਾਈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਸੇਵਕ ।
He has not acquired any sister or brother.
ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਘਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਰੀਰ-ਛੱਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
He builds a hut of straw, and the fool lights a fire in it.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ।੧।
Only those who have such pre-ordained destiny on their foreheads, find Shelter with the Master. ||1||
(ਸੂਰਜ) ਅੱਗ (ਵਾਂਗ) ਪਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਹਰੇਕ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ) ਕ੍ਰਾਹ ਕ੍ਰਾਹ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਸੂਰਜ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰਤੱਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ (ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
The fire dries up the moisture, and she dies in agony. But even then, the sun does not grow tired.
(ਸੂਰਜ ਦਾ) ਰਥ ਚੱਕਰ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਕਿਤੇ ਛਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਬੀਂਡਾ ਭੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਜੂਹ ਵਿਚ (ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਵੇਂ) ਟੀਂ ਟੀਂ ਪਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਤਪਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਨ ਲੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
His chariot moves on, and the soul-bride seeks shade; the crickets are chirping in the forest.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਥੇ) ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ (ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਜੁਆਨੀ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।
The pleasures of wealth, youth, property and comforts will not stay with you, O mother.
ਝੱਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਇਸ) ਠਗ-ਨੀਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਜ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੈ ।੧।
Seeing the mirage, the madman is entangled in it; he is imbued with pleasures that pass away, like the shade of a tree. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ (ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਵੀਂ ਛਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਸ) ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਣ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ,
The shade from a cloud is transitory,
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਪਸਾਰਾ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ ।੩।
like the worldly paraphernalia of attachment and corruption. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ) ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਵਰਖਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The clouds have rained down all over the world.
(ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ) ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਉਸ ਨਾਮ-ਵਰਖਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਆਨੰਦ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
My Beloved Lord God has become merciful to me; I am blessed with ecstasy, bliss and peace. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜੀਵ) ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
In false doubt and superstition, people wander all around, lured by love and emotional attachment to their children and families.
ਪਰ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੀ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਢਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੱਚੀ) ਕੰਧ ।੧।
But just like the passing shade of the tree, your body-wall shall crumble in an instant. ||1||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ) ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
Emotional attachment to Maya is spread out all over the world.
(ਕਿਤੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ
Seeing a beautiful woman, the man is overcome with sexual desire.
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਇਤਨੇ) ਵਧੀਕ ਔਗੁਣ ਹਨ ਕਿ (ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਾ) ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਢਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
My body is filled with so many demerits; I am covered with faults and demerits.
ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ) ਡੋਲਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੫।
O Lord! When the True Guru becomes Merciful, then the mind is held in place. ||5||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! (ਵਰਖਾ ਰੱੁਤੇ) ਬੱਦਲ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ (ਚਾਰ ਚੁਫੇਰੇ) ਵਿਛ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਰਖਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਨਿੱਕੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਸਰੋਵਰ ਤਾਲਾਬ ਭਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Kabeer, the sky is overcast and cloudy; the ponds and lakes are overflowing with water.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਪਪੀਹੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਮੰਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੨੪।
Like the rainbird, some remain thirsty - what is their condition? ||124||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਕ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ ,ਵੈਰਾਗ-ਰੂਪ ਫਲ ਹੈ,
Kabeer, the Lord is the tree, and disillusionment with the world is the fruit.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਝਗੜਾ-ਝਾਂਜਾ ਮੁਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਸ ਰੱੁਖ ਦੀ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਛਾਂ ਹੈ । ੨੨੮।
The Holy man, who has abandoned useless arguments, is the shade of the tree. ||228||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਇਕ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਬੀ ਬੀਜ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਫਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Kabeer, plant the seeds of such a plant, which shall bear fruit throughout the twelve months,
