ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਚਾ-ਮਲ੍ਹਾਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਭੁੱਲੀ ਰਹੇ
With the mind caught up in playful pleasures, involved in all sorts of amusements and sights that stagger the eyes, people are led astray.
ਜੇ ਅਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਬਾਦਿਸ਼ਾਹੀਆਂ ਮਿਲੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹੋਣ ਕਿ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਛਤਰ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਮੌਜਾਂ) ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ।੧।
The emperors sitting on their thrones are consumed by anxiety. ||1||
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਅਖਵਾ ਲਵਾਂ (ਜਦੋਂ ਚਾਹਾਂ) ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਸ) ਸੱਦ ਸਕਾਂ,
He may be called a Siddha, a man of spiritual perfection, and he may summon riches and supernatural powers;
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਤਾਜ ਦੀ ਟੋਪੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸ਼ਾਹੀ) ਛਤਰ ਝੁਲਾ ਸਕਾਂ,
he may place a crown upon his head, and carry a royal umbrella;
(ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਤਾਕਤ ਕਿਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।੬।
but without the Lord of the Universe, where can Truth be found? ||6||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਛੱਤਰ-ਧਾਰੀ ਹੈ,
He is the Supreme King, with the royal canopy above His Head.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।੩੭।
O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||37||
ਕਈ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾਂ, ਸੂਰਜ ਤੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਨ,
Many millions are the moons, suns and stars.
ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਤੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ;
Many millions are the demi-gods, demons and Indras, under their regal canopies.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਰਾਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਛਤਰ ਝੁਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਰਾਂ ਹਨ,
Those who enjoy regal power and rule, royal canopies and thrones, many beautiful women,
ਜੋ ਪਾਨ ਕਪੂਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ—ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਭੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ।੩।
betel nuts, camphor and fragrant sandalwood oil - in the end, they too shall die. ||3||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੌਰਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨ ਵਰਗੇ (ਬਲੀ) ਭਰਾ ਸਨ, ਉਹ ਭੀ (ਇਹ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਕਿ) ਅਸਾਡੀ (ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ) ਅਸਾਡੀ (ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ), (ਪਾਂਡੋ ਕੀਹ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ?)
The Kaurvas, who had brothers like Duryodhan, used to proclaim, "This is ours! This is ours!"
(ਕੁਰਖੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਜੰਗ ਵੇਲੇ) ਅਠਤਾਲੀਆਂ ਕੋਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੈਨਾ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰ ਸੀ (ਪਰ ਕਿੱਧਰ ਗਈ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਕਿੱਧਰ ਗਿਆ ਉਹ ਛਤਰ? ਕੁਰਖੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਜੰਗ ਵਿਚ) ਗਿਰਝਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋਥਾਂ ਖਾਧੀਆਂ ।੨।
Their royal procession extended over sixty miles, and yet their bodies were eaten by vultures. ||2||
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਚੋਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ, ਰਾਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ, ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ
The various sorts of pleasures, powers, joys, beauty, canopies, cooling fans and thrones to sit on
ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਛਤਰ ਚਉਰ, ਤੇ ਬੈਠਣ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਤਖ਼ਤ—ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਕੌਤਕ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹਨ ।੧।
- the foolish, ignorant and blind are engrossed in these things. O Nanak, desire for Maya is just a dream. ||1||
(ਇਸ ਉੱਚੇ ਨਾਮਣੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ) ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੱਚ-ਰੂਪ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਕੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ (ਧਰਮ ਦਾ) ਰਾਜ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ।
Nanak established the kingdom; He built the true fortress on the strongest foundations.
(ਬਾਬਾ) ਲਹਿਣਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ, ਜੋ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ (ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਦਾ) ਛਤਰ ਧਰਿਆ ।
He installed the royal canopy over Lehna's head; chanting the Lord's Praises, He drank in the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ) ਨੇ ਐਸੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਿਖਾਈ ਕਿ (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਾਬਾ ਲਹਣਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਮਨ) ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਇਤਨੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖਿਆ,
He revealed such creative power, and touched such greatness.
(ਫਿਰ) ਬਾਬਾ ਲਹਣਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਦਾ) ਛਤਰ ਧਰਿਆ ਤੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸੋਭਾ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਤਕ ਅਪੜਾਈ ।
He raised the royal canopy to wave over the head of Lehna, and raised His glory to the skies.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਾਲਾ ਛਤਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ (ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਅਸਚਰਜ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
Seeing Nanak's canopy waving over Your head, everyone was astonished.
(ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਭੀ) ਉਹੀ ਨੂਰ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਦਾ ਭੀ) ਉਹੀ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੀ)
The same mark on the forehead, the same throne, and the same Royal Court.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ) ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰਿਆ ਸੱਦਾ ਭੇਜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Those who receive the call in the last hours of the night, chant the Name of their Lord and Master.
ਤੰਬੂ, ਛੱਤਰ, ਕਨਾਤਾਂ ਰਥ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਤਿਆਰ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Tents, canopies, pavilions and carriages are prepared and made ready for them.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ!) ਕੋਈ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ, ਕੋਈ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਕਰੇ ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾਈ ਕਰੇ (ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਛਤਰ (ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ ।
High and low, bad and good - the comforting canopy of the sky stretches evenly over all.
(ਆਕਾਸ਼) ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੈਰੀ, (ਆਕਾਸ਼) ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇੱਕ-ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ ।੪।
It knows nothing of friend and enemy; all beings are alike to it. ||4||
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਚਾਰ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁਕਤੀਆਂ (ਮਿੱਥੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ), ਇਹ ਚਾਰੇ ਮੁਕਤੀਆਂ (ਅਠਾਰਾਂ) ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਖਸਮ (-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਪਈਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ,
I have obtained the four kinds of liberation, and the four miraculous spiritual powers, in the Sanctuary of God, my Husband Lord.
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ) ਮੁਕਤੀ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚਹੰੁਆਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਘਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਸੋਭਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਛਤਰ ਝੁਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
I am liberated, and famous throughout the four ages; the canopy of praise and fame waves over my head. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੋਰ ਕੌਣ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
O Love, who else but You could do such a thing?
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਭੀ ਛੱਤਰ ਝੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
O Patron of the poor, Lord of the World, You have put the canopy of Your Grace over my head. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਲੇ ਗੁਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
and assembles his army in the realm of the mind's sky, the Tenth Gate.
ਉਹ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ (ਅਸਲ) ਛਤਰ ਝੁਲਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The canopy of royalty waves over such a sultan. ||3||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (ਆਖ਼ਰ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ) ਹੱਡੀਆਂ (ਦੀ ਮੁੱਠ) ਜੋ ਚੰਮ ਨਾਲ ਲਪੇਟੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ ।
Kabeer, do not be so proud of your bones wrapped up in skin.
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਰਲੇ ਜੋ ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ (ਸਵਾਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ) ਤੇ ਜੋ (ਝੁਲਦੇ) ਛਤਰਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਸਨ ।੩੭।
Those who were on their horses and under their canopies, were eventually buried under the ground. ||37||
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ (ਜੀਵ!) ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ, ਇਹ ਘਰ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਇਹ ਪਿਆਰ, ਕੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ; ਕਦ ਤਾਈਂ (ਤੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ?
Neither body, nor house, nor love last forever. You are intoxicated with Maya; how long will you be proud of them?
ਇਹ (ਰਾਜਸੀ) ਛਤਰ, ਇਹ ਹੁਕਮ-ਨਾਮੇ, ਇਹ ਚਉਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਚਉਰ-ਬਰਦਾਰ, ਸਭ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ । ਪਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੰੂ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈਂ ।
Neither crown, nor canopy, nor servants last forever. You do not consider in your heart that your life is passing away.
(ਗੁਰੂ) ਅੰਗਦ (ਦੇਵ ਜੀ) ਨੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਥਾਪਿਆ;
Guru Angad showed His Mercy, and established Amar Daas as the True Guru.
(ਗੁਰੂ) ਅਮਰਦਾਸ (ਜੀ) ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਛੱਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ (ਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿਤਾ ।
Guru Amar Daas blessed Guru Raam Daas with the umbrella of immortality.
(ਆਪ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਰੱਬੀ ਚਉਰ ਝੁੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਨੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਣ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ (ਸਦਾ) ਉਚਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The invincible chauri, the fly-brush, waves over His head; with His mouth, He drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਛਤਰ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The Transcendent Lord Himself has placed the royal canopy over the head of Guru Arjun.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਪ ਕੱਟੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।
Those people who found Guru Raam Daas were rid of their sins.
ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਛਤਰ ਤੇ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ।੨।੨੧।
He gave the Royal Canopy and Throne to Guru Arjun, and came home. ||2||21||9||11||10||10||22||60||143||
