(ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਹਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ,
Countless fools, blinded by ignorance.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਚੋਰ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਮਾਲ (ਚੁਰਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਕੇ) ਵਰਤ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।
Countless thieves and embezzlers.
ਹੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣੀ, ਮੈਂ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਹੱਕ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ
I have not appreciated what You have done for me, Lord; I take from others and exploit them.
ਮੈਂ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਚੋਰ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਮੂੰਹ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਹੋਵਾਂਗਾ ?
What face shall I show You, Lord? I am a sneak and a thief.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਮੈਂ ਸੱਚ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ (ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਖਾ) ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ।
When You are with me, what more could I want? I speak only the Truth.
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਨੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਧੰਧੇ-ਰੂਪ ਚੋਰ ਨੇ ਮੋਹ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰ (ਮਹਲ) ਲੱਭਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ,
Plundered by the thieves of worldly affairs, she does not obtain the Mansion of His Presence.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਰੁੱਝਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਮ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੁੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਥੋੜ੍ਹ-ਵਿਤਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ।
O my mind, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and attached to duality, those faithless cynics are strangled by the Messenger of Death.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜੇ ਗਏ, ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਚੋਰ ਬਣ ਗਏ । ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।੪।
Such faithless cynics, who have forgotten the Naam, are thieves. O my mind, do not even go near them. ||4||
ਮੈਂ ਬਥੇਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਕਈ ਭੈੜ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਤੇ ਲੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੋਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਚੋਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
I am a sinner - I have committed so many sins; I am a villainous, thieving thief.
ਪਰ ਹੁਣ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖ) ।੪।੧੧।੨੫।੬੩।
Now, Nanak has come to the Lord's Sanctuary; preserve my honor, Lord, as it pleases Your Will. ||4||11||25||63||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਸ਼ੂ (ਪੱਠਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਢਿੱਡ ਭਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Like beasts, they consume all sorts of tasty treats.
ਤੇ (ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਫੜੇ ਹੋਏ) ਚੋਰਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਰੱਸੀ ਨਾਲ (ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਧੀਕ) ਜਕੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
With the rope of emotional attachment, they are bound and gagged like thieves. ||1||
(ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੁਕ ਕੇ) ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਾਹਰ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸਾ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੋਰ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਉਤੇ ਫੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ)
They do their evil deeds, and pretend otherwise;
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਚੋਰ (ਵਾਂਗ) ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
but in the Court of the Lord, they shall be bound and gagged like thieves. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ,
One whose mind does not contemplate the Name of the Lord
ਉਹ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਚੋਰ (ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਫੜਿਆ ਮਾਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੬।
is bound like a thief, in the City of Death. ||6||
ਲਾਲਚ, ਝੂਠ, ਵਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ—ਬੱਸ! ਇਹੀ ਧਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ ।
Greed, falsehood, corruption and emotional attachment - these are what he collects within his mind.
ਜੋ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ ਹਨ, ਚੋਰ ਹਨ, ਮਹਾ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਥ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The worst perverts, thieves and slanderers - he passes his time with them.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਂ ਪਾਨ ਚੱਬ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ (ਬਾਜਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਡੋਰਾਂ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਸ਼ੁਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ),
They hold the string of the kite in their hands, and chew betel leaves in their mouths,
ਉਹ ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਕੱਸ ਕੇ ਬੱਧੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
but at the time of death, they shall be tied up tight, like thieves. ||3||
(ਇਸ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹੁਣ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਰਹੁ,
Keep your mind awake and aware now, O Sibling of Destiny.
ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ (ਹੁਣ ਤਕ) ਜੀਵਨ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ; (ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਚੋਰ ਜਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਘਰ ਲੁੱਟ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You were careless, and you have wasted your life; your home is being plundered by thieves. ||1||Pause||
(‘ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ’ ਗਾ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
On Tuesday, understand reality;
ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਦਾ (ਹੱਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ) ਢੰਗ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ)
you must know the way the five thieves work.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ (ਜੋੜ, ਇਹ) ਹੈ (ਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ) ਭੋਗ, (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਡਰ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
With the diet of His Love, doubt and fear depart.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਰਾਖੇ ਦਾ ਤੇਜ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ) ਕੋਈ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਚੋਰ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ ।
With the Lord as your night watchman, no thief will dare to break in.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੜ ਕੇ (ਕਲਿਜੁਗੀ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਧੜੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਝਗੜੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the five thieves instigate alliances and conflicts.
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਕਾਮ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and self-conceit have increased.
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਤੁਰੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ
Without the Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all remain like beasts and animals.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚੋਰ ਹਨ ।੬।
They do not know the One who created them; without the Name, all are thieves. ||6||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮਾਇਆ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੰਧ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਥ ਬਣਾ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੈ), ਮਾਇਆ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉਹਲਾ ਬਣਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ) ਕੰਧ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਤ੍ਰਿੱਖਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ) ਉਲਟੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ । (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆਂ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Maya is the wall of doubt - Maya is the wall of doubt. It is such a powerful and destructive intoxicant; it corrupts and wastes away one's life.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਇਕ) ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸੰਘਣਾ ਜੰਗਲ ਹੈ; ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸੰਘਣਾ ਜੰਗਲ ਹੈ, (ਇਥੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-) ਘਰ ਨੂੰ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੀ) ਚੋਰ-ਮਨ ਲੁੱਟੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਸੂਰਜ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਮਾ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਨੂੰ) ਮੁਕਾਈ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
In the terrible, impenetrable world-forest - in the terrible, impenetrable world-forest, the thieves are plundering man's house in broad daylight; night and day, this life is being consumed.
