ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ ਨਾਲ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਦਾਨ (ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ), ਸੰਤੋਖ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Listening-truth, contentment and spiritual wisdom.
ਮਾਨੋ, ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਹੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ,
Listening-take your cleansing bath at the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹਬਰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਿਆ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਿਆ
Those who do not have faith in the Primal Being, the True Guru, and who do not enshrine love for the Shabad
ਉਹ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਭੀ (ਤੀਰਥ-) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਭੀ ਦਾਨ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
-they take their cleansing baths, and give to charity again and again, but they are ultimately consumed by their love of duality.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ (ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਨ (ਬਣਾ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਚਮਕ ਉੱਠਦਾ ਹੈ
By Guru's Grace, your face shall be radiant. Chanting the Naam, you shall receive the benefits of giving charity and taking cleansing baths.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਉੱਕਾ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Sexual desire, anger and greed are eliminated, and all egotistical pride is abandoned. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ (ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
This is the time to speak and sing the Praise and the Glory of God, which brings the merit of millions of cleansing and purifying baths.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਭ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਨ (ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ) ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
The tongue which chants these Praises is worthy; there is no charity equal to this.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ (ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ),
People recite from memory the wisdom of the six schools of philosophy;
ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
they perform worship services, wear ceremonial religious marks on their foreheads, and take ritual cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਾਨਸਰੋਵਰ ਹੈ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ (ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ), ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਸਦਾ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਮ-ਮੋਤੀ) ਚੁਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean. The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean.
ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਉਸ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਉਤਾਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੪।
They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4||
(ਉਹ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਭੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।
They may bathe, but their filth is not removed.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਰਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੬।
One who dies while yet alive, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad, is rid of this filth of ego. ||6||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ
Twenty-four hours a day, meditate in remembrance on God's Name.
(ਇਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ
In it are the many sacred shrines of pilgrimage and cleansing baths.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
Perfect is the path; perfect is the cleansing bath.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਉੱਦਮ ਉਕਾਈ-ਹੀਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ (ਤੀਰਥ-) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।੧।
Everything is perfect, if the Naam is in the heart. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਗੁਰੂ-ਸੰਤ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ (ਹੀ) ਮੁਕੰਮਲ (ਤੀਰਥ-) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।
The Blessed Vision of the Saints is the perfect cleansing bath.
ਗੁਰੂ-ਸੰਤ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
By the Grace of the Saints, one comes to chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ !) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰ ।
I meditate on the Feet of God within my mind.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਹੀ) ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।੧।
This is my cleansing bath at all the sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚੁੱਭੀਆਂ ਲਾ ਲਈਆਂ, ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਏ,
The merits of taking millions of ceremonial cleansing baths,
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਅਰਬਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਖਰਬਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਏ
the giving of hundreds of thousands, billions and trillions in charity
ਬਾਹਰ (ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) (ਤੀਰਥ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Outwardly, they display knowledge, meditation and purification,
ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ (-ਰੂਪ) ਕੱੁਤਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
but within clings the dog of greed.
ਕਦੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
Sometimes, they take cleansing baths at places of pilgrimage.
ਕਦੇ ਸਿੱਧ ਤੇ ਸਾਧਿਕ (ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ) ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Sometimes, as Siddhas or seekers, they impart spiritual wisdom.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ,
Take your cleansing bath in the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹੋਹੁ ।
To the Holy, make your life a sacrifice.
ਵਿੱਦਿਆ, ਤਪ, ਜੋਗ, ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ,
learning, penance, Yoga and meditation on God;
ਸੇ੍ਰਸ਼ਟ ਗਿਆਨ, ਚੰਗੇ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ;
The most sublime wisdom and purifying baths;
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ) ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ (ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।
all Dharmic virtues, sacred purifying baths,
(ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਿਆਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ ।
the most lofty and sublime spiritual wisdom
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਖ਼ਲਕਤਿ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੋ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਤੇ, ਜੀਵਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੱਖੋ ।
The twelfth day of the lunar cycle: Dedicate yourself to giving charity, chanting the Naam and purification.
(ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ ।
Worship the Lord with devotion, and get rid of your pride.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ (ਸੱਚਾ) ਸਿੱਖ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਸੱਚਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਹ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.
ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਟੁੱਭੀ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹ
Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.
ਜਪ ਤਪ, ਸੰਜਮ, ਵਰਤ, ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ—ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ
What good is chanting, penance or self-mortification? What good is fasting or cleansing baths,
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਦ ਤਕ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈ ਕਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨਾ, ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਅਸਲ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਹੈ)।੨।
unless you know the way to worship the Lord God with loving devotion? ||2||
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ!) ਤੇਰੀ ਬੜੀ ਸੁੱਚੀ (ਸੁਥਰੀ) ਰਸੋਈ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ । ਬਾਕੀ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਪੰਛੀ ਤਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਗੰਦੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਢਿੱਡ ਭਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ)
Your kitchen is so clean.
ਤੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਾ ਭੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਲ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ
You take your bath, and worship, and apply the crimson mark upon your forehead;
(ਪਰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Some are householders, servants, and seekers, attached to the Guru's Teachings.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੭।
They hold fast to the Naam, to charity, to cleansing and purification; they remain awake in devotion to the Lord. ||7||
ਘੜਾ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਾ ਕੇ (ਜੇ) ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਵਾਂ (ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਾਣੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਤਾਲੀ ਲੱਖ (ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜੀਵ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Bringing the pitcher, I fill it with water, to bathe the Lord.
(ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸੀ (ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ; ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ) ਮੈਂ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਵਾਂ? ।੧।
But 4.2 million species of beings are in the water - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||1||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਣੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,)
The wealth of the Lord is my cleansing bath, the wealth of the Lord is my wisdom; I center my meditation on the Lord.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਨਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਲਈ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਬੇੜੀ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਤਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਰਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਅਪੜਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The wealth of the Lord is my raft, the wealth of the Lord is my boat; the Lord, Har, Har, is the ship to carry me across. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Creator Himself is the sixty-eight sacred places of pilgrimage; He Himself takes the cleansing bath in them.
ਮਾਲਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He Himself practices austere self-discipline; the Lord Master Himself causes us to chant His Name.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਨਾਹ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਾਹ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।
By the Order of the Lord's Command, he leaves his house and goes outside, and in an instant, everything becomes alien to him.
ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖੇਹ-ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ।੧।
The self-willed manmukh does not remember the Name of the Lord, does not give in charity, and does not cleanse his consciousness; his body rolls in the dust. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਰੋਏ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
After taking your cleansing bath, remember your God in meditation, and your mind and body shall be free of disease.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ) ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਰੁਕਾਵਟਾਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਵਸਰ ਉੱਘੜ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
Millions of obstacles are removed, in the Sanctuary of God, and good fortune dawns. ||1||
ਆਤਮਕ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਸੀ ਅੰਤਰ-ਆਤਮੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ।
After taking my bath of purification, I returned to my home,
ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
and I found bliss, happiness and peace. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੈ੍ਰ-ਗੁਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਚਾਰ-ਕੂਟ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
She controls the three qualities and the four directions of the world.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜੱਗ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਤਪ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਥਾਂ ਭੰਨ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਕੀਹ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ)? ।੧।
She destroys sacrificial feasts, cleansing baths, penances and sacred places of pilgrimage; what is this poor person to do? ||1||
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿੱਤ ਗੰਗਾ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The moon dwells in Shiva's forehead; it takes its cleansing bath in the Ganges.
ਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਦੀ ਕੁਲ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ-ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ) ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ
Among the men of the moon's family, Krishna was born;
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ, ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਜੀਵਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ, ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ
He does not practice the Naam, the Name of the Lord; nor does he practice charity or inner cleansing.
ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ (ਜਗਤ) ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ।੩।
He does not sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, even for an instant. Clinging to his many falsehoods, he does not please his own mind, and he does not understand his own self. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਕਾਮ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ਹੈ
I have renounced sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment.
ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ, ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨੀ, ਆਚਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੱਖਣਾ—ਇਹ ਮੈਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।੩।
I have enshrined the Naam within myself, with charity, true cleansing and righteous conduct. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਪੌੜੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੰੁਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ । ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ ।
Celestial peace comes; the Truth pleases me. How could these True Teachings ever be erased?
(ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣੀ, ਤਾਂ) ਕੋਈ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ, ਕੋਈ ਦਾਨ, ਕੋਈ ਚੰੁਚ-ਗਿਆਨਤਾ, ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
He Himself is Undeceivable; how could He ever be deceived by cleansing baths, charity, spiritual wisdom or ritual bathings?
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਥਿਤ ਤੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ।
The Tenth Day: Meditate on the Naam, give to charity, and purify yourself.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।
Night and day, bathe in spiritual wisdom and the Glorious Virtues of the True Lord.
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਾਇਆ, ਤੂੰ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ, ਤੂੰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਦੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਤੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ । (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਏ ਸਰੀਰ-ਪਿੰਜਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਲੱਕੜ (ਵਰਗਾ ਕੁਰਖ਼ਤ-ਦਿਲ) ਹੋ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You do not practice truth, abstinence, self-discipline or humility; the ghost within your skeleton has turned to dry wood.
ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਹ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਆਚਰਨਿਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਧੇਜ ਹੈ । ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
You have not practiced charity, donations, cleansing baths or austerities. Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, your life has gone in vain. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ!) ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਤਲਾਬ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਸ ਤਲਾਬ ਵਿਚ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧੩।
This body is a pool, O Saints; bathe in it, and enshrine love for the Lord. ||13||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ!) ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।੧੪।
Those who cleanse themselves through the Naam, are the most immaculate people; through the Shabad, they wash off their filth. ||14||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਹੈ ।
The Gurmukh is blessed with the Name, charity and purification.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੁੜਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The Gurmukh centers his meditation on the celestial Lord.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਗਵਾਨ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Countless sins are erased in an instant, meditating on the Benevolent Lord within the heart.
ਭਗਵਾਨ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ) ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਦਾਨ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹਨ ।੭।
Such a person becomes the purest of the pure, and is blessed with the merits of millions of donations to charity and cleansing baths. ||7||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦੇ ।
Some take cleansing baths and give donations to charities, but they do not understand.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜੰਗ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Some struggle with their minds, and conquer and subdue their minds.
ਕਈ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕਾਲਖ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਰੱਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ) ।
They apply ceremonial marks to their foreheads, and take cleansing baths, but they are blackened within.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸੱਚੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ।
They wear religious robes, but without the True Teachings, God is not found.
ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਕਰੋ, ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੋ ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਓ ।
Confirm your faith in the Naam, charity and self-purification; chant the Guru's sermon forever.
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫਿਰ) ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਭੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕ ਸਕਦੀ) ।੨੦।
Blessed with intuitive poise, I have found God; I am rid of the fear of the Messenger of Death. ||20||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ,
In the Sat Sangat, apply the dust of the feet of the holy to your face;
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਗੰਗਾ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ।੩।
this is how to bathe in the sixty-eight sacred shrines, and the Ganges. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਦੇਵ-) ਪੂਜਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਪ-ਤਪ ਹੈ, ਤਾਪ ਹੀ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।
It is my worship, meditation, austerity and cleansing bath.
ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, I have become free of desire. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਪੁਰਬਾਂ ਸਮੇ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ,
The Naam is my cleansing bath and purification.
(ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ) ਸਭ ਕੁਝ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦਾਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਣਾ—ਇਹ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਹੈ ।
The Naam is my perfect donation of charity.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਇਹ ਲਗਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਹਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤ ਵੱਸ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ),
Know that He is in the universe, and in the body as well.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਸਦਾ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਰੂਪ) ਮਾਨ-ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Take your cleansing bath in the Mansarovar Lake.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ! ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਵਿਚ) ਚੁੱਭੀ ਲਾਇਆ ਕਰੋ, ਸੁੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹੋ ।
Rise in the early hours of the morning, and take your cleansing bath. Before you go to bed at night, remember to worship the Lord.
(ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ) ਔਖੇ ਦਾਅ ਤੋਂ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ-ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
My True Guru will assist you, even on your most difficult moves; you shall reach your true home in celestial peace and poise. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ,
Meditate in remembrance on the Naam, the Name of the One Lord.
ਤਾਂ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਪਾਪ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਦਾਨ ਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
In this way, the sins of your past mistakes shall be burnt off in an instant. It is like giving millions in charity, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੱਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ), ਸੰਤੋਖ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ;
Those who have truth as their fast, contentment as their sacred shrine of pilgrimage, spiritual wisdom and meditation as their cleansing bath,
ਦਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਟ-ਦੇਵ ਹੈ, (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਧੀਕੀ) ਸਹਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਆਦਤਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਹੈ;
kindness as their deity, and forgiveness as their chanting beads - they are the most excellent people.
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
I take my cleansing bath in the dust of the Guru's Feet.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
I am honored in the True Court of the Lord. ||2||
(ਤੀਰਥ-ਆਦਿ ਉਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਚਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਲਾਏ ਜਾਣ,
Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body.
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਕਦੇ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।੧।
But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਉਸ ਨੇ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ) ਹੋਮ ਜੱਗ (ਕਰ ਲਏ । ਉਸ ਨੇ, ਮਾਨੋ,) ਉਲਟੇ ਲਟਕ ਕੇ ਤਪ (ਕਰ ਲਏ । ਉਸ ਨੇ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਦੇਵ-) ਪੂਜਾ (ਕਰ ਲਈ)
Burnt offerings, sacred feasts, intense meditations with the body upside-down, worship services
(ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਨੋ,) ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ,
and taking millions of cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage
(ਹੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ!) ਤੂੰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
You perform daily cleansing rituals,
ਦੋ ਧੋਤੀਆਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, (ਹੋਰ) ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ (ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ), ਦੂਧਾਧਾਰੀ (ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈਂ;
wear two loin-cloths, perform religious rituals and put only milk in your mouth.
ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਕਾਮ, ਕੋ੍ਰਧ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ, ਈਰਖਾ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ—ਇਹ ਸਭ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Lust, anger, egotism, jealousy and desire are eliminated by chanting the Name of the Lord.
(ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨੇ, (ਓਥੇ) ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨੇ, ਤਪ ਸਾਧਣੇ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸੁੱਚ ਦੇ ਕਰਮ—(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ) ਅਸਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ ।
The merits of cleansing baths, charity, penance, purity and good deeds, are obtained by enshrining the Lotus Feet of God within the heart.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦਾ) ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਭੋਜਨ ਹੈ । ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ) ਸੋਭ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The True Name is the sacred shrine, the True Name is the cleansing bath of purification and food. The True Name is eternal love; chant the True Name, and be embellished.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ) ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਗੰਧਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The True Name is obtained through the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, is fragrant with the True Name.
ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ, ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Those who make pilgrimages to sacred shrines, observe ritualistic fasts and make donations to charity while still taking pride in their minds
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਰਮ ਇਉਂ) ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ (ਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ।
- O Nanak, their actions are useless, like the elephant, who takes a bath, and then rolls in the dust. ||46||
