ਦੇਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ ਅਫੀਮ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
The Great Giver has given the intoxicating drug of falsehood.
(ਇਸ ਮੋਹ-ਅਫੀਮ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਕੇ) ਮਸਤ ਹੋਈ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੇ ਮੌਤ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ, ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ
The people are intoxicated; they have forgotten death, and they have fun for a few days.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੋਹ-ਨਸ਼ਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਮੱਲਣ ਦਾ ਆਹਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ।੧।
Those who do not use intoxicants are true; they dwell in the Court of the Lord. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋਈਦਾ ਹੈ
O Baba, the pleasures of other foods are false.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੋਗੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਭੀ ਕਈ) ਮੰਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ
Eating them, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਂਕ ਤੇ ਚਾਉ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
O Baba, the pleasures of other clothes are false.
ਜਿਸ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਭੈੜੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਣ, ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਂਕ ਤੇ ਚਾਉ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ । ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ)
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the pleasure of houses and mansions. Your Glance of Grace is my family, Lord.
(ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ) ਹੁਕਮ (ਮਨਾਣਾ) ਤੇ (ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਣੇ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਨੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ
The Hukam of Your Command is the pleasure of Your Will, Lord. To say anything else is far beyond anyone's reach.

ਕਿੳਂੁਂਿਕ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਐਸ਼-ਇਸ਼ਰਤ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਗੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਚੱਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।੪।੭।

ਹੇ ਮਨ ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੜੇ ਚਾਉ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਚਿੱਤਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ (ਸੁੰਦਰ) ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਫ਼ੈਦ ਬਾਂਕੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
There are painted mansions to behold, white-washed, with beautiful doors;
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੜੇ ਚਾਉ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਚਿੱਤਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਤਾਂ ਢਹਿ ਕੇ ਢੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ) ਪਾਲੀਦਾ ਹੈ
they were constructed to give pleasure to the mind, but this is only for the sake of the love of duality.
ਜੇ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਗਾਈਆਂ ਬਣ ਜਾਣ (ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ) ਚਸ਼ਮੇ ਦੱੁਧ ਤੇ ਘਿਉ ਬਣ ਜਾਣ,
If the rivers became cows, giving milk, and the spring water became milk and ghee;
ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਸ਼ਕਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਨਿੱਤ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੋਵੇ,
If all the earth became sugar, to continually excite the mind;
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੰਮੀ ਉਮਰ ਭੀ ਜੀੳਂੂਦਾ ਰਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੜੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ,
Without the fear of God, you may live very, very long, and savor the most enjoyable pleasures.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੁਕਾਲਖ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਇਥੋਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, if you die without the fear of God, you will arise and depart with a blackened face. ||2||
ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਸੋਨੇ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.
ਘਰ, ਪੱਕੇ ਮਹਲ ਘੋੜੇ (ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ (ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The mind has become attached to the pleasures of houses, palaces, horses and other enjoyments.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸੋ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਕਠਨ ਹੈ);
The sublime state of the True Guru is not known; no one knows what pleases the Perfect True Guru.
(ਪਰ ਹਾਂ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ (ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ) ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਦੇ (ਹਲਕੇ) ਵਿਚ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Deep within the hearts of His GurSikhs, the True Guru is pervading. The Guru is pleased with those who long for His Sikhs.
(ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣੋ!) ਤੁਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ, ਇਹ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Dedicate yourself to the worship of your Husband Lord; this is pleasing to your Beloved Husband.
ਜੇ (ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਤੁਸੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ ।
If you walk in accordance with your own will, then your Husband Lord will not be pleased with you.
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਝੱਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
Here and hereafter, she abides in the Fear of God, and serves the True Guru without hesitation.
ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜੇ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਪਤੀ ਭੀ ਤ੍ਰੁੱਠ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Discarding worldly adornments, she meets her Husband Lord, and she celebrates joyfully with Him.
ਮੈਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਦਾਲ, ਆਟਾ ਤੇ ਘਿਉ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
Lentils, flour and ghee - these things, I beg of You.
ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਤ ਸੁਖੀ ਰੱਖੇ,
My mind shall ever be pleased.
ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਲੋਕ (ਅਨ-ਮਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਹ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ) ਝੂਠ (ਹੈ), ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਬਹਿਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
Reading and studying falsehood, people are happy; in their ignorance, they speak nonsense.
(ਪਰ ਉਹ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਕਿ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਰੱਬ ਖ਼ਲਕਤ ਵਿਚ (ਭੀ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਸੱਤਵੇਂ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ) ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
The True Creator Lord is diffused into His creation; He is not just the dark-skinned Krishna of legends. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਇਸ ਜਗਤ-ਅਖਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ ਰੰਗ ਹਨ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ
He fashioned it in various ways, with limitless colors and forms.
ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਭੋਗ (ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਭੋਗਦਾ) ਥੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ
He watches over it with joy, and He never tires of enjoying it.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਬੱਧਾ-ਰੁੱਧਾ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਨਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ।
Paying a fine under pressure, does not bring either merit or goodness.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਣੋ ਜੋ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ ।੩।
That alone is a good deed, O Nanak, which is done by one's own free will. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Lord's people are the most lofty and exalted. Meeting with them, the most exalted status is obtained.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ ।੨।
I am the slave of the slave of the Lord's slaves; my Lord and Master is pleased with me. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ (ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਹਿਸਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ,
One who is blessed with Your Grace is not called to give his account.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਮਾਣ ਲਏ ਹਨ ।
One with whom You are pleased, obtains the nine treasures.
ਜੀਵ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਿਚ, ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਵਿਚ, ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਫੋਕੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The pleasures enjoyed in happiness bring ruin; acting in corruption is useless indulgence.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ, ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਮੂਲ ਭੀ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਖ਼ਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਡੰਡਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੦।
Forgetting the Naam, and caught by greed, he betrays his own source; the club of the Righteous Judge of Dharma will strike him over the head. ||10||
ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਸਾਲ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ;
I wandered around lost for a year, but no one touched my soul.
ਸਾਰੇ (ਮੂੰਹੋਂ) ਆਖਦੇ ਹੀ ਆਖਦੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੀ) ਸੁਣੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਰਹਤ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ ।
