ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਭਉ) ਤੇਰੀ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਨੂੰ ਡੰਡਾ ਬਣਾਵੇਂ (ਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੂੜ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ ਟੁੱਟ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ)।
Let the remembrance of death be the patched coat you wear, let the purity of virginity be your way in the world, and let faith in the Lord be your walking stick.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਆਈ ਪੰਥ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
See the brotherhood of all mankind as the highest order of Yogis; conquer your own mind, and conquer the world.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਕਾਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਣਾਵਾਂ, ਕਾਇਆਂ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਰਤਾਵਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ
If I surrender my body like a bride, the Enjoyer will enjoy me.
ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਲ (ਇਤਨਾ) ਮੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ ਮਿਲੀ ਰਹੇ), ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ
Do not make love with one who is just a passing show.
(ਜੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤਾਂ ਨਿਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ
The body does not obtain purity without loving devotion to the Lord.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।੯।
O Nanak, never forget the Naam; the Guru shall unite us with the Creator. ||8||9||
ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਰੋਗ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਕਲੀਫ਼ ਨਾਹ ਆਈ ਹੋਵੇ, ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ
You may have a body free of disease and deformity, and have no worries or grief at all;
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ) ਚੇਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਆਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜੇ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ
you may be unmindful of death, and night and day revel in pleasures;
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਝੜੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੂਪ ਕੌਲ ਫੱੁਲ ਕੁਮਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਹ
And so, your intellect has dried up through corruption, and the lotus flower of your body has wilted and withered.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਛੱਡ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ; (ਸਮਾ ਵਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ) ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਹੱਥ ਮਲੇਂਗਾ ।੪।
You have forsaken the Bani, the Word of the Immortal Lord, in this mortal world; in the end, you shall regret and repent. ||4||
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Within this body are countless objects.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Gurmukh attains Truth, and comes to see them.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਜਿਹਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਇਸ) ਜਰਜਰੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਢਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿੰਦ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ।
This human body is transitory, and transitory are the garments it wears.
(ਜਿੰਦ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ।
Attached to duality, no one attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
(ਇਕ ਪਾਸੇ) ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਬਹੁਤ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
Within this body are countless vast vistas;
(ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹੈ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋਵੇ ?) ।
the Immaculate Naam is totally Inaccessible and Infinite.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Doubt and duality are burned away by the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੬।
Within his body, he deals and trades, and obtains the Treasure of the True Name. ||6||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੇਕ ਗੁਣ ਭਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
In the frame of the human body, He has placed all things.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੀ) ਖੋਜ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Those few who are pierced through by the Word of the Shabad, obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. He calls them into His Wondrous Palace. ||3||
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਉਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੈ,
When the body is filled with ego and selfishness,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ—ਰੂਪ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ।
the cycle of birth and death does not end.
(ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਹਉਮੈ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ) ਦੋਵੇਂ ਭਰਾ ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ,
Within this body are the two brothers, sin and virtue.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ।
When the two joined together, the Universe was produced.
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਕਪੜਾ ਪਹਿਨਾ ਲਵਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਾਪੜੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਢੱਕ ਲਵਾਂ) ਚਾਹੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ,
I may totally cover my body with clothes, and wash them continually;
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਲਾਲ ਪੀਲੇ ਜਾਂ ਕਾਲੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਾ ਕੇ (ਚਾਰ) ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਾਂ,
I may shout out loud, the white, red, yellow and black Vedas;
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿੱਤ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਰੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਤਪਸ੍ਵੀ ਬਣ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ
They wash their clothes, and scrub their bodies, and try to practice self-discipline.
(ਪਰ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਮੈਲ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਸਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ) ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
But they are not aware of the filth staining their inner being, while they try and try to wash off the outer dirt.
ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ (-ਆਤਮਾ) ਦਾ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਮਿਥ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Destiny has brought together and united the body and the soul-swan.
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੇ (ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ) ਵਿਛੋੜਾ (ਭੀ) ਬਣਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ।
He who created them, also separates them.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤਾਉ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ਸੋਨੇ (ਨੂੰ ਕੱਸ ਲਾਈਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਘਾਲ-ਕਮਾਈ ਦੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਸ ਲਾਈਦੀ ਤੇ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੰਗ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Their bodies become golden, and take on the color of spirituality.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਰਾਫ਼ (-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਫੇਰ ਤਪਾਣ (ਭਾਵ ਹੋਰ ਘਾਲਾਂ) ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ।
If the Jeweller casts His Glance of Grace, they are not placed in the fire again.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ) ਇਹ ਜਗਤ (ਇਕ) ਖੇਡ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ ।
With your nectar-like body, you live in comfort, but this world is just a passing drama.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ! ਤੂੰ ਲੱਬ ਲੋਭ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ (ਵਿਅਰਥ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ), ਤੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਲੱਬ ਲੋਭ ਕੂੜ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਕੀਤੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਭਾਰ ਚੁਕਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You practice greed, avarice and great falsehood, and you carry such a heavy burden.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਇਉਂ ਰੁਲਦੇ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ।੧।
O body, I have seen you blowing away like dust on the earth. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਨਸੀਹਤ ਸੁਣ ।
I say to you, O my body: listen to my advice!
ਤੰੂ ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੰੂ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਝੂਠੀ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You slander, and then praise others; you indulge in lies and gossip.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ! ਤੰੂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਰਿਹਾ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਹੀ ਨ ਆਈ ਕਿ) ਤੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ।
O body, you are living in a dream! What good deeds have you done?
ਚੋਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਮਾਲ-ਧਨ ਮੈਂ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ।
When I stole something by deception, then my mind was pleased.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਝੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਏ ਹੋਣ) ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਅੰਞਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਾਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The body is wild, and the mind is foolish. Practicing egotism, selfishness and conceit, your life is passing away.
(ਤੇ) ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ (ਮਮਤਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੀ (ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਮਾ ਵਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਪਛੁਤਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੩।੧੫।
Prays Nanak, when the naked body is cremated, then you will come to regret and repent. ||4||3||15||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਰੂਪ ਨਹੀਂ । ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿ) ਤੇਰਾ ਉਹ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਾਂ ।
What form of Yours should I worship and adore?

ਜਦੋਂ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ।
