ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ (ਜਨਮ ਜਨੇਊ ਵਿਆਹ ਮਰਨ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਮੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮੰਨੇ ਹੋਏ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
They may perform all sorts of religious rituals and good actions,
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ) ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੀ (ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੩।
but without the Name, the egotistical ones are cursed and doomed. ||3||
(ਪੰਡਤ ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਚਰਚਾ ਛੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
You read your books and say your prayers, and then engage in debate;
ਮੂਰਤੀ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਗਲੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਮੁਖੋਂ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ;
you worship stones and sit like a stork, pretending to be in Samaadhi.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਵਲੀਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਨਾੜੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ
They read scriptures, and contemplate the Vedas; they practice the inner cleansing techniques of Yoga, and control of the breath.
(ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਾਥ ਮੁੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ । (ਸਗੋਂ) ਵਧੀਕ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਲੋਕ ਕਰਦੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਸੂਲੀਆ ਜਮ ਲੱੁਟ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The religious rites, rituals and hypocrisies which are seen, are plundered by the Messenger of Death, the ultimate tax collector.
ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਛਿਨ-ਭਰ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
In the state of Nirvaanaa, sing the Kirtan of the Creator's Praises; contemplating Him in meditation, even for an instant, one is saved. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਕਰ,
Sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, O Pandit.
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਤੂੰ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ (ਜੀਵਨ ਬਤੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਸਲ) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪਹੰੁਚੇਂਗਾ, ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਲਸਿਲੇ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਵੇਗਾ ।
Religious rituals and egotism are of no use at all. You shall go home with happiness, O Pandit. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਬਹੁਤੇ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਤਰਲੇ ਲਿਆਂ,
No one can bring You under control, by despising the world.
ਵੇਦ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ,
No one can bring You under control, by studying the Vedas.
ਤੀਰਥ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ,
No one can bring You under control, by bathing at the holy places.
ਕਿਸੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ-ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨਾਲ,
No one can bring You under control, by any clever tricks.
ਬਹੁਤਾ ਦਾਨ ਦੇਣ ਨਾਲ,
No one can bring You under control, by giving huge donations to charities.
