ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਭਉ) ਤੇਰੀ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਨੂੰ ਡੰਡਾ ਬਣਾਵੇਂ (ਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੂੜ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ ਟੁੱਟ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ)।
Let the remembrance of death be the patched coat you wear, let the purity of virginity be your way in the world, and let faith in the Lord be your walking stick.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਆਈ ਪੰਥ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
See the brotherhood of all mankind as the highest order of Yogis; conquer your own mind, and conquer the world.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾ
O Siblings of Destiny, instruct your minds in this way.
ਹੇ ਮਨ ! ਕਿਉਂ ਆਲਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ? ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
O mind, why are you so lazy? Become Gurmukh, and meditate on the Naam. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ
O my mind, walk in harmony with the True Guru.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਵੇਂਗਾ), ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਵੇਂਗਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਖ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਵੇਂਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Dwell within the home of your own inner being, and drink in the Ambrosial Nectar; you shall attain the Peace of the Mansion of His Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ) ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਾ ਰਹੁ
O my mind, attach yourself to the service of the True Guru.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਦੇ ਤੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤਿਆਗ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Whatever is seen, shall pass away. Abandon the intellectualizations of your mind. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ । ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ।੧।
Meditate on the One, O my mind, who is the Support of all. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਉਮੈ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਧਾ ਬਣਾ)
Meditate within your mind on the Guru's Feet.
ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਭੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਾਰਨ) ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਹੀ ਪਈਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ-ਤਿਆਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ) ਭੇਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਬੜਾ ਮਾਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Reading their books over and over again, people continue making mistakes; they are so proud of their religious robes.
ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨੀ ਹਾਂ)
But what is the use of bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, when the filth of stubborn pride is within the mind?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
Applying oneself to the service of the Guru, the mind is purified, and peace is obtained.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The Word of the Guru's Shabad abides within the mind, and egotism is eliminated from within.
(ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਜਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦਾ
The Society of the Guru is not obtained like this, by trying to be near or far away.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ (ਸਿੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, you shall meet the True Guru, if your mind remains in His Presence. ||2||
(ਉਸ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਰੋਸ ? (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਰਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਦੋ ਹਨ (ਹਰੀ ਨਾਲ) ਪਿਆਰ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ) ਪਿਆਰ; (ਤੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ) ਕਾਰ ਪਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Loving attention to the Lord and attachment to Maya are the two separate ways; all act according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.
(ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕਸਵੱਟੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਰਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
The Gurmukh has conquered his own mind, by applying the Touchstone of the Shabad.
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ (ਸਦਾ) ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Servant Nanak speaks the Ambrosial Bani of the Word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ
It is dear and pleasing to the minds of the GurSikhs.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਆਰਸੀ (ਲੋੋਕਨਿਗ-ਗਲੳਸਸ) ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਜੰਗਾਲ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)
This mind is a mirror; how rare are those who, as Gurmukh, see themselves in it.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਫਿਰ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ) ਜੰਗਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ (ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ-ਪਰਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
Rust does not stick to those who burn their ego.
(ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲ਼ਾ (ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, (ਤਦੋਂ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ।
This mind is filthy and polluted; it does not meditate on the One.
ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਬਹੁਤ ਮੈਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Deep within, it is soiled and stained by the love of duality.
(ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੀ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, look within their bodies, into their minds.
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Through loving devotion, their ego evaporates.
(ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇ੍ਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਚੰਚਲ (ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ) ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ,
This unstable mind cannot be held steady.
(ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਡਾਵਾਂ ਡੋਲ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Attached to duality, it wanders in the ten directions.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
When someone kills and subdues his own mind, his wandering nature is also subdued.
ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
Without such a death, how can one find the Lord?
(ਇਹ) ਮਨ (ਸੌਖੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ) ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The mind is uncontrollable; how rare are those who subdue it.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ) ਅਮੋੜ-ਪੁਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Those who move the immovable become pure.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ !) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰ ।
I meditate on the Feet of God within my mind.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਹੀ) ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।੧।
This is my cleansing bath at all the sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ (ਸਭ ਹਸਤੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) ।
The Guru, the Lord of the Universe, the Supreme Lord God, is perfect.
ਉਸ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਧ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਹੌਸਲੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਲਬਿਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।ਰਹਾਉ।
Worshipping Him, my mind has found a lasting peace. ||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਠਾਕੁਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਵਜ਼ੀਰਾਂ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ) ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ,
I seek the Sanctuary of the Lord's Prime Minister;
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਬਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂਗਾ) ।੩।
beholding Him, my mind is comforted and consoled. ||3||
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਇਹ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
Holy Saadhus: this mind cannot be restrained.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹਾਵ-ਭਾਵ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Fickle desires dwell with it, and so it cannot remain steady. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਓ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੋ ।
Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਤੁਸੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹੋ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਦੇ) ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਿੱਖਿਆ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ ।
You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਹਲੀ ਪੈ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਦੱਸ) ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਵੇਖਾਂ?
My mind has become sad and depressed; how can I see God, the Great Giver?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਥੀ! ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ! ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ! ਹੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਜੀਉ!
My Friend and Companion is the Dear Lord, the Guru, the Architect of Destiny.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Maya clings to the mind, and causes it to waver in so many ways.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਵਰਜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
When You, O Lord, restrain someone from asking for wealth, then, O Nanak, he comes to love the Name. ||1||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਦਾ) (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੇ,
You may practice cleansing day and night,
(ਫੇਰ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਧੋਤਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।
but the filth of your mind shall not leave your body.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ) ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਓਧਰ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਹੀ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਘਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਢੂੰਡ ਫਿਰਿਆ ਹਾਂ (ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ);
I have wandered, searching in the ten directions - wherever I look, there I see Him.
ਮਨ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਭ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ।੧੦।
The mind comes to be controlled, O Nanak, if He grants His Perfect Grace. ||10||
ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਮਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ;
Everyone speaks through the mind.
ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੋੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਭਗਤੀ (ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।੨।
Without killing the mind, devotional worship is not performed. ||2||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਾਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸਨਕ ਆਦਿਕ, ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਨਾਗ—
Even sages like Sanak and Naarad, and the thousand-headed serpent,
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੀ (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਸੁਖ ਵਲ ਸੁਰਤ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਵੇਖਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਭੀ ਅੰਤਰ-ਆਤਮੇ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਨਾਹ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਿਆ) ।੩।
did not see the mind within the body. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! -- ਉਹ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਦੀ ਦੌੜ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਪਰਤਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
My mind has turned away from the world, and is absorbed in the Mind of God.
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਓਪਰਾ ਓਪਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ; ਪਰ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਹੋਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
By Guru's Grace, my understanding has been changed; otherwise, I was totally ignorant. ||1||Pause||
(ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ) ਕੰਮ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੇ) । ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਦੀ) ਕਾਮਯਾਬੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
MAMMA: The mortal's business is with his own mind; one who disciplines his mind attains perfection.
ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਕੰਮ) ਨਿਰੋਲ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਵਰਗਾ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਵਾਹ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ) ।੩੨।
Only the mind can deal with the mind; says Kabeer, I have not met anything like the mind. ||32||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਤਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ
To conquer the mind is the knowledge of the six Shaastras.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The Divine Light of the Lord God is perfectly pervading. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹੀਰੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਹੈ
The Lord is the Infinite Primal Being, beyond the beyond, the priceless jewel.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਮਨ, ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਸੀ, ਲਾਲ-ਸਮਾਨ ਅਮੋਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਠਰੰ੍ਹਮੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
My mind is totally content, imbued with my Beloved. ||3||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਦਿਆਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
My soul does not stay held by the Merciful Lord.
ਇਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਲੋਭੀ ਕਪਟੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।
It is greedy, deceitful, sinful and hypocritical, and totally attached to Maya. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ,
Meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O my mind; night and day, center your consciousness on the Lord.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ ਉਹੀ ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਏਂਗਾ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗੇਗੀ ।੨।
You shall have the fruits of your desires, and you shall never feel hunger again. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ
My mind thirsts for Your Vision;
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵੈਰਾਗਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
in peaceful ease and bliss, I dwell in detachment. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ)! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ਮੈਂ ਗਰੀਬ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You are the True Support of me, the poor mortal, O my Perfect True Guru.
ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਣ ਲਈ) ਧੀਰਜ ਫੜਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, my mind is encouraged. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ।
O my mind, meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Here and hereafter, He is our Helper and Companion; embrace love and affection for the One Lord. ||1||Pause||
(ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਖੰੁਝ ਕੇ) ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਨ ਪਾਗਲ ਹਾਥੀ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹੈ,
The mind of the faithless cynic is like a crazy elephant.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ
It wanders around the forest, distracted by attachment to Maya.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਲਈ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
This mind commits its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma.
This mind is born of the five elements.
‘ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ, ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ’—ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰੀਏ, ਤਦੋਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Abandoning egotism and pride, one obtains contemplative understanding.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਆਸਰਾ ਦੇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
When the mind surrenders to the Lord Master, He bestows the support of the Truth. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਅੰਸ ਹੈਂ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਾ ਨੂਰ ਹੀ ਨੂਰ ਹੈ (ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਆਪਣੇ ਉਸ ਅਸਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾ ।
O my mind, you are the embodiment of the Divine Light - recognize your own origin.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਲੈ ।
O my mind, the Dear Lord is with you; through the Guru's Teachings, enjoy His Love.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਵੇਖ, ਕੂੰਜ) ਉੱਡਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉੱਡ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਲ੍ਹਣੇ ਤੋਂ) ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਕੋਹ (ਦੂਰ) ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The flamingoes fly hundreds of miles, leaving their young ones behind.
(ਦੱਸ,) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ (ਚੋਗਾ) ਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ? ਕੌਣ ਚੋਗਾ ਚੁਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ? (ਕੂੰਜ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ! ਇਸ ਯਾਦ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਬੱਚੇ ਪਲਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ।੩।
Who feeds them, and who teaches them to feed themselves? Have you ever thought of this in your mind? ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਅਸਲ) ਭਗਤ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One whom the Lord Himself causes to dance, is called a devotee. He Himself links us to His Love.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ) ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਹ ਗੀਤ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
He Himself sings, He Himself listens, and He puts this blind mind on the right path. ||2||
ਮਨ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਹਾਥੀ ਹੈ; (ਜੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਇਸ ਦਾ) ਮਹਾਵਤ (ਬਣੇ, ਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਕੁੰਡਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਓਧਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਧਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The mind is the elephant, the Guru is the elephant-driver, and knowledge is the whip. Wherever the Guru drives the mind, it goes.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੁੰਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹਾਥੀ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, without the whip, the elephant wanders into the wilderness, again and again. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਭੇਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Some wander around the forests, wearing religious robes, but the Fascinating Lord remains distant from them. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਹਿਣ ਸੁਣਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੀਤ ਭੀ ਗਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਗੁਣ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
They talk, preach, and sing their lovely songs, but within their minds, the filth of their sins remains. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਹੇ (ਤਾਂ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ।
When the mind is filthy, everything is filthy; by washing the body, the mind is not cleaned.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
This world is deluded by doubt; how rare are those who understand this. ||1||
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਸਣ ਕਰਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ, ਜੇ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ (ਆਸਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ ਦੀ) ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ
Even if one learns the Yogic postures of the Siddhas, and holds his sexual energy in check,
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।੨।
still, the filth of the mind is not removed, and the filth of egotism is not eliminated. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Remembering the Word of the Shabad, the mind becomes immaculately pure, and then, one sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Under Guru's Instruction, one comes to understand his own self, and then, he comes to dwell in the home of his inner self. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ, ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ-ਮਿੱਤਰ (ਲੱਭ ਪਏਗਾ) ।
As Gurmukh, receive the blessing of His Glance of Grace, O my mind; the Name of the Lord, your help and support, is within you.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukhs are blind, and devoid of wisdom; they are ruined by the love of duality.
ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤਾਵਲੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
Cutting my mind and body apart, cutting them into pieces, I offer these to the one, who recites to me the Words of the True Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸੁਖ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
My unattached mind has renounced the world; obtaining the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan, it has found peace.
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਮੈਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ) ਪੈਰ ਮਲਾਂਗਾ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਧੋਵਾਂਗਾ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ ।
I wash your feet, I massage and clean them; I give this mind to you.
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ) ਸੁਣ । ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ । ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਅਜੇਹਾ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਹ (ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਾਂ ।੨।
Listen, friends: I have come to Your Sanctuary; teach me, that I might unite with God. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਸਾਡਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ, ਜੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਤ ਬਣਾ ਲਈਏ, ਜੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਜੀਭ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਕਲਮ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ,
If my body were to become the paper, O Beloved, and my mind the inkpot;
ਤਾਂ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਸੁਭਾਗਤਾ ਇਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਉੱਕਰਦੇ ਚੱਲੋ ।
and if my tongue became the pen, O Beloved, I would write, and contemplate, the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਨੋ-ਕਾਮਨਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਵਾਲਾ) ਆਰਾ ਰਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
His mind's desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off;
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ।੩।
but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. ||3||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
The mind of the self-willed manmukh is so very stubborn; it is stuck in the love of duality.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ) ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
He does not find peace, even in dreams; he passes his life in misery and suffering.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਧ ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਲਾ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ,
The Pandits have grown weary of going door to door, reading and reciting their scriptures; the Siddhas have gone into their trances of Samaadhi.
ਕਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ; (ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਾਬੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ।
This mind cannot be controlled; they are tired of performing religious rituals.
ਭੇਖ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਾਧੂ ਲੋਕ) ਕਈ ਭੇਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ;
The impersonators have grown weary of wearing false costumes, and bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines.
ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਭਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਈ ।
They do not know the state of their own minds; they are deluded by doubt and egotism.
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿੱਝਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਘਾਲਿ ਥਾਇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈ);
Without conquering his mind, no one can be successful. See this, and concentrate on it.
ਭੇਖ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ (ਸਾਧੂ ਭੀ) ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ
The wandering holy men are tired of of making pilgrimages to sacred shrines; they have not been able to conquer their minds.
ਕਈ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਚਿੱਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ
The filth of countless incarnations sticks to this mind; it has become pitch black.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਲੀ ਦੀ ਲੀਰ ਧੋਤਿਆਂ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦੀ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸੌ ਵਾਰੀ ਧੋਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੋ ।
The oily rag cannot be cleaned by merely washing it, even if it is washed a hundred times.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਬੂਲਦਾ, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
When the mind is conquered, its turbulent wanderings are stopped.
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਛੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
Without conquering the mind, how can the Lord be found?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਮਨ ਬੜੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The mind is undisciplined; only a rare few can discipline it.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ) ਅਸਾਧ ਰੋਗ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
If someone eats the uneatable, then he becomes immaculate.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹਿਆ ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਫਿਰਦਾ), ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The mind is in the body, and the True Lord is in the mind.
ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Merging into the True Lord, one is absorbed into Truth.
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
But his mind is still filthy - how can he become pure?
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ) ਉਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੬।
One who meets the True Lord obtains honor. ||6||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ, ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਿਆਰਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿੰਜਦਾ ਹੈ,
I make my mind and body into pure little gardens, and irrigate them with the sublime essence of the Lord.
ਵੱਡੀ (ਮੋਹਣੀ) ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲੋਂ (ਸੰਬੰਧ) ਤੋੜ ਕੇ ਇਸ (ਨਾਮ-) ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
I am drenched with this sublime essence by His Grace, and the powerful hold of Maya's corruption has been broken. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ, ਧਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਸੁਆਦ—ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ
Comforts, riches and the sweet pleasures of Maya - do not implant these within your mind.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ) ਦਾ ਗਹਣਾ ਹੈ ।੨।੮।੧੨।
Slave Nanak is satisfied and satiated by the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan; his only ornamentation is the love of the Lord's Name. ||2||8||12||
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵੇਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।
See, hear, speak and implant the True Lord within your mind.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ।੨।
He is all-pervading, permeating everywhere; O Nanak, be absorbed in the Lord's Love. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜਗਤ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਕ ਖੇਡ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ, ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਖੋਟੀ ਮਤਿ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ
Such is the drama of the world, that he does not contemplate the Lord's Name.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ।ਰਹਾਉ।
In an instant, all this false play shall perish; O my mind, meditate on the Lord. ||Pause||
ਪਿਆਰਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੱਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ।੧।
What can anyone do to undermine them? My Creator Lord is on their side. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ । ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ਕਰ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਜਨਮਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
So meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind. Meditate on the Lord, O mind; He is the Eliminator of all the pains of reincarnation. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹੀ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਹਨ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ—ਇਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ, ਇਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪੰੁਨ-ਦਾਨ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਹੈ ।
In their minds, these friends celebrate in happiness; all good karma, righteousness and Dharma, the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage, charity and worship, are found in the love of the True Name.
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹਰੀ! (ਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਕੰਨ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ, ਤਾਂ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਸੁਣੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ ।
Please bless me, O Beloved God, with millions of ears, with which I may hear the Glorious Praises of the Imperishable Lord.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Listening, listening to these, this mind becomes spotless and pure, and the noose of Death is cut.
ਹੇ ਖੋਟੇ ਮਨ! ਤੇਰਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ) ਬਹੁਤ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
O vicious mind, no faith can be placed in you; you are totally intoxicated.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਖੋਤੇ ਦੀ ਪਿਛਾੜੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਤੋਂ ਲੱਦ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਖ਼ਰਮਸਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੌਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The donkey's leash is only removed, after the load is placed on his back. ||1||Pause||
। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਪੂਰੀ ਨਾਹ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੁੰਹਦਾ ।
And that day, when their self-interests are not served, on that day, they shall not come near you.
ਸੋ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ, ਉਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
O my mind, serve your Lord, day and night; He shall help you in good times and bad. ||3||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਚਾਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।
O my mind, meditate on the Lord, and read about the Lord every day.
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੋਰ) ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਜਿਵਾਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Other than the Lord, no one can kill you or save you; so why do you worry, O my mind? ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
Meditate on such a God in your mind.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ਕਰ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
He shall be your help and support everywhere, in good times and bad. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਇਸ) ਮੂਰਤੀ ਦਾ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਧਿਆਨ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Meditate on the image of the Guru within your mind;
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ-ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸਭ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ) ਮੰਨ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
let your mind accept the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and His Mantra.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ) ਰਤਨ ਹੈ (ਇਕ ਐਸਾ) ਹੀਰਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a priceless jewel, a diamond.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।੨।
Attuned to it, the mind is comforted and encouraged. ||2||
(ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ (ਇਕ) ਰੱੁਖ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹੈ, (ਇਸ) ਰੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਮਨ ਪੰਛੀ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ (ਗਿਆਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ) ਪੰਛੀ (ਬੈਠੇ) ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ।
The body is the tree, and the mind is the bird; the birds in the tree are the five senses.
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਪੰਛੀ) ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ‘ਨਾਮ’-ਰੂਪ ਫਲ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਫਾਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ।
They peck at the essence of reality, and merge with the One Lord. They are never trapped at all.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ-(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
When the mind becomes steady and stable, it abides in the heart, and then the Gurmukh realizes the root, the source of all.
ਪ੍ਰਾਣ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੁਆਸ) ਨਾਭੀ-ਰੂਪ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਸਣ ਤੇ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਰੰਭ ਨਾਭੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖੋਜ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The breath is seated in the home of the navel; the Gurmukh searches, and finds the essence of reality.
ਜਦੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੀ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੀ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨ (ਚੇਤਨ ਸੱਤਾ) ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ?
"When this heart and body did not exist, where did the mind reside?
ਜਦੋਂ ਨਾਭੀ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਦੀ ਥੰਮ੍ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ (ਸੁਆਸ) ਕਿਸ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਸੀ? ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਰੂਪ ਰੇਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੇ ਕਿਥੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ?
When there was no support of the navel lotus, then in which home did the breath reside?
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ (ਤੂੰ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਡ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ) ਆਚਰਨ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਦਵਾਤ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਬਣ ਰਹੇ ਆਚਰਨ-ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਨਾਲ) ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ (ਨਵੇਂ) ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੁਣ ਤਕ ਦੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
Actions are the paper, and the mind is the ink; good and bad are both recorded upon it.
ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਆਚਰਨ-ਰੂਪ ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਉੱਕਰਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) । (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕੱਠ-ਰੂਪ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੇ੍ਰਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
As their past actions drive them, so are mortals driven. There is no end to Your Glorious Virtues, Lord. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਿਰਜਣ-ਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ,
Now, I have obtained the state of eternal life.
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny, has come into my conscious mind; I seek the Sanctuary of the Saints. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਹ ਛੱਡਿਆ ।
O my mother, I have not renounced the pride of my mind.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਉਮਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I have wasted my life intoxicated with Maya; I have not focused myself in meditation on the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਲਹਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈ,
The Word of the Shabad has subdued the waves of Maya.
ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Egotism has been conquered, and this mind has become immaculate.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
In this temple of the mind, the mind wanders around.
(ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਪਰਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Discarding joy like straw, it suffers in terrible pain.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ ।
O my mind, meditate on the Guru, the Lord of the Universe.
(ਏਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The filth of countless incarnations shall be washed away. Breaking your bonds, you shall be united with the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਮਾਂ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,
O mother, I have gathered the wealth of the Lord's Name.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਬਹਿ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
My mind has stopped its wanderings, and now, it has come to rest. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੇਰੀ ਲਿਵ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਲੱਗ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਆਪਣੇ ਪੇ੍ਰਮ ਵਿਚ) ਮੋਹ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
My mind is fascinated with the Fascinating Lord. By great good fortune, I am lovingly attuned to Him.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ-ਦੁੱਖ ਕੱਟੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪੇੇ੍ਰਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।੪।
Contemplating the True Lord, all the resides of sins and mistakes are wiped away. My mind is pure and immaculate in His Love. ||4||
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! (ਜਦ ਮੰਗੋ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗੋ, (ਇਸੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਤੇ ਪੰੁਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਮਿਲਣਗੇ
You shall obtain the rewards of all righteousness and goodness, if you desire to be the dust of all.
ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ—ਹੇੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਸੁਣੋ, ਇਹ ਮਨ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਉਡਾਰੂ ਪੰਛੀ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਾਣ ਲਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆਉ) ।੨।੧।੬।
Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints: this mind is like the bird, flying above the forest. ||2||1||9||
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
One who dies in the Shabad and conquers his mind - blessed is the mother who gave birth to him.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਚਾ ਤੇ ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He is true in the Court of the Lord, and his coming into this world is judged to be true.

Meeting with the Holy people, my mind blossoms forth.
। ਮੈਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । (ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those Holy beings; joining the Sangat, the Congregation, I am carried across to the other side. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ) ਮਨ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ, ਸਦਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ (ਲੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ), (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੀ) ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਉਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪੰਛੀ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ (ਉਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਚੋਰ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਲੱੁਟਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ।
The mind is Maya, the mind is a chaser; the mind is a bird flying across the sky.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਚੋਰ (ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੱਢ ਦੇਈਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ (ਸਰੀਰ-) ਨਗਰ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਬਾਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸੋਭਾ-ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The thieves are overpowered by the Shabad, and then the body-village prospers and celebrates.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹੁ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।
O my mind, hurry to the Sanctuary of the Lord; He is Potent to do everything.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਨਾਹ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ, ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ) ।੮।੨।੭।੨।੯।
O Nanak, never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Whatever He does, comes to pass. ||8||2||7||2||9||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਮਨ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ (ਠੱਗੀ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਵਾਲਾ) ਪਾਪ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Kabeer, the mortal knows everything, and knowing, he still makes mistakes.
ਉਸ ਦੀਵੇ ਤੋਂ ਕੀਹ ਸੁਖ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦੀਵੇ ਦੇ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਅਸੀ ਖੂਹ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਏ? ।੨੧੬।
What good is a lamp in one's hand, if he falls into the well? ||216||
ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ, ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Those who make pilgrimages to sacred shrines, observe ritualistic fasts and make donations to charity while still taking pride in their minds
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਰਮ ਇਉਂ) ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ (ਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ।
- O Nanak, their actions are useless, like the elephant, who takes a bath, and then rolls in the dust. ||46||
