ਪਹਿਲਵਾਨ ਆ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, (ਪਿੜ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ, ਜਗਤ-ਅਖਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ) ਫੇਰੀਆਂ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ
The wrestlers enter the arena and circle around.
ਮੇਰੀ ਪਿੱਠ ਉੱਤੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਥਾਪੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਵਿਰੋਧੀ) ਪੰਜੇ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਜੁਆਨ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲਏ ।੧੮।
I have thrown the five challengers to the ground, and the Guru has patted me on the back. ||18||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵੈਰੀ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਸਾਰਾ ਘਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਲੇ ਗੁਣ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਬਚਾਵਾਂ ?
There are five of them, but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਤ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਲੁੱਟਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਕਰਾਂ ? ।੧।
They are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1||
ਹੇ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਗਰੀਬ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਕਾਮ ਆਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰ,
The five vicious thieves are assaulting my poor being; save me, O Savior Lord!
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ । ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਤਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
They are tormenting and torturing me. I have come, seeking Your Sanctuary. ||1||
(ਮੇਰਾ) ਕਾਮ, ਕੋ੍ਰਧ, ਲੋਭ, ਮੋਹ ਅਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ।
Sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment - may these be gone, and egotism as well.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ)—ਹੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ! ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਸਰਣ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ।
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of God; please bless me with Your Grace, O Divine Guru. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਪੰਜ ਚੋਰ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਲੁੱਟਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ।
Within this body dwell the five thieves: sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and egotism.
(ਜਦੋਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਲੁਟਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੰੁਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ) ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ (ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ) ।
They plunder the Nectar, but the self-willed manmukh does not realize it; no one hears his complaint.
(ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਇਤਨਾ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
The five vices have corrupted my mind.
ਕਿ ਹਰ ਦਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿੱਥ ਪਵਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Moment by moment, they lead me further away from the Lord. ||2||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ, ਮਾਨੋ,) ਇਕ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਵਿਚ) ਪੰਜ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਚੌਧਰੀ (ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ), ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ (ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਮਾਮਲਾ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ।
In the one fortress of the body, there are five rulers, and all five demand payment of taxes.
(ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਮੁਜ਼ਾਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਦਬਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ), (ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਮੁਜ਼ਾਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਦਬਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ), ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਭਰਨਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਿਆ) ।੧।
I have not farmed anyone's land, so such payment is difficult for me to pay. ||1||
ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਮਾਨੋ ਇਕ) ਨਗਰ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵ ਇਸ (ਨਗਰ ਦੀ) ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਹੈ,
The body is a village, and the soul is the owner and farmer; the five farm-hands live there.
ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ—ਅੱਖਾਂ, ਨੱਕ, ਕੰਨ, ਜੀਭ ਤੇ (ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਾਲੀ) ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ । ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਚੌਧਰੀ ਦਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ (ਅਮੋੜ ਹਨ) ।੧।
The eyes, nose, ears, tongue and sensory organs of touch do not obey any order. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ ਦੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ,
Mankind is afflicted with the disease of egotism.
ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਨੇ ਹਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The disease of sexual desire overwhelms the elephant.
