ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਦਰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ
Without the Guru, the disease is not cured, and the pain of egotism is not removed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
By Guru's Grace, He dwells in the mind, and one remains immersed in His Name.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
When this mind is filled with pride,
ਤਦੋਂ (ਉਸ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਝੱਲਾ (ਹੋਇਆ) ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਭ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਵੱਖਰਾ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
then it wanders around like a madman and a lunatic.
(ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਜੀਵ) ‘ਹਉ’ ਵਿਚ (ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ, ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਅੱਡਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਕਦੇ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਦੇ) ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
In ego they come, and in ego they go.
ਕਦੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
In ego they are born, and in ego they die.
‘ਹਉਮੈ’ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਖਰੀ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹੀ ਨਿਲਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੀਵ) ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਵਖਰੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹੇ ।
This is the nature of ego, that people perform their actions in ego.
ਇਸ ਵਖਰੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਵਖਰੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਰੂਪ ਜ਼ੰਜੀਰ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਘੇਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
This is the bondage of ego, that time and time again, they are reborn.
(ਸੁਤੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਉਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਅੱਡਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਭਰਮ ਕਿੱਥੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Where does ego come from? How can it be removed?
ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਇਕ ਲੰਮਾ ਰੋਗ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਲਾ-ਇਲਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
Ego is a chronic disease, but it contains its own cure as well.
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
If the Lord grants His Grace, one acts according to the Teachings of the Guru's Shabad.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕਾਮ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ—ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ।
In sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and self-conceit, peace is not to be found.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੁ । ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ ।
So be the dust of the feet of all, O my mind, and then you shall find bliss, joy and peace. ||2||
ਜਦੋਂ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ,
When the Lord God showered His Mercy,
ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤੀ ।
