(ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਹਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ,
Countless fools, blinded by ignorance.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਚੋਰ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਮਾਲ (ਚੁਰਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਕੇ) ਵਰਤ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।
Countless thieves and embezzlers.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਸਾਡੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ) ਉਸ ਭਿਆਨਕ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸੋਂ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ (ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ)
In that pool, people have made their homes, but the water there is as hot as fire!
ਜੋ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪੈਰ ਚੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ (ਜੀਵ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ) । ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੀ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਉਸ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
In the swamp of emotional attachment, their feet cannot move. I have seen them drowning there. ||1||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨ-ਰੂਪ ਕੌਲ-ਫੱੁਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਲਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਲਲਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸੇ ਰਸ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
My mind is enticed by the honey-sweet Lotus Feet of the Lord. Day and night, I thirst for them.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਪੀਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਜਲ ਦੇਹ, ਜਿਸ (ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ) ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ ।੪।੩।
Bestow the Water of Your Mercy upon Nanak, the thirsty song-bird, so that he may come to dwell in Your Name. ||4||3||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਘਸਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਬਣਾ ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਅਕਲ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਬਣਾ
Burn emotional attachment, and grind it into ink. Transform your intelligence into the purest of paper.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨੂੰ ਕਲਮ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਬਣਾ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਲਿਖ
Make the love of the Lord your pen, and let your consciousness be the scribe. Then, seek the Guru's Instructions, and record these deliberations.
(ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਸੜ ਬਲ ਕੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਰੁਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਸੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਲੋਹਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The body is burnt to ashes; by its love of Maya, the mind is rusted through.
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਉਹ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਕੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਵਾਜਾ ਵਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Demerits become one's enemies, and falsehood blows the bugle of attack.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Meeting with the Guru, the Naam is obtained, and the thirst of emotional attachment departs.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
When the mind is permeated with the Lord, one remains detached within the home of the heart.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਨਾਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮਤਾ
The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment; they are not balanced or detached.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ (ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
They do not comprehend the Word of the Shabad. They suffer in pain forever, and lose their honor in the Court of the Lord.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤਾਂ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਭਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
O my mind, day and night, you are always full of wishful hopes.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ !) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ (ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੜ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ) ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Serve the True Guru, and your emotional attachment shall be totally burnt away; remain detached within the home of your heart. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਜਗਤ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਚੁਫੇਰੇ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ)
In the corruption of the three qualities, there is blindness; in attachment to Maya, there is darkness.
ਲੋਭ-ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਜੀਵ (ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ) ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ) ਢੰਢੋਰਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਦੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
The greedy people serve others, instead of the Lord, although they loudly announce their reading of scriptures.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
In attachment to Maya, they have forgotten the Father, the Cherisher of the World.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਗ਼ਾਫਿਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ) ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜਕੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
Without the Guru, all are unconscious; they are held in bondage by the Messenger of Death.
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਪਸਰ ਰਿਹਾ) ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ
The three qualities hold people in attachment to Maya. The Gurmukh attains the fourth state of higher consciousness.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
Granting His Grace, God unites us with Himself. The Name of the Lord comes to abide within the mind.
ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਪਰ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਥੀ) ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ
Gazing upon their families, people are lured and trapped by emotional attachment, but none will go along with them in the end.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਉੱਚਤਾ ਦੀ) ਕੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ
Serving the True Guru, one finds the Lord, the Treasure of Excellence. His Value cannot be estimated.
ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨੇ—ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿਕਾਰ (ਹੀ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Everything under the influence of the three qualities shall perish; the love of duality is corrupting.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read the scriptures, but they are trapped in the bondage of emotional attachment. In love with evil, they do not understand.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਮੋਹ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Through the Guru, the Path is found, and the darkness of emotional attachment is dispelled.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਣੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
If one dies through the Shabad, then salvation is obtained, and one finds the Door of Liberation.
ਜਗਤ ‘ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ’ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੀ (ਭਾਵ, ‘ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਾਂ’—ਇਸ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ
Engrossed in egotism, the world perishes. Without the Guru, there is utter darkness.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਨੇ) ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
In emotional attachment to Maya, they have forgotten the Great Giver, the Giver of Peace.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ
God joins to Himself those whose minds are fascinated with the True Word of His Shabad.
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
Night and day, they are attuned to the Naam, and their light is absorbed into the Light.
ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ
He Himself abides in the mind, and drives out attachment to Maya.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ (ਹੀ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ । (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪਾ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ) ਸਮਝਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
He Himself bestows glorious greatness; He inspires the Gurmukh to understand. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹ
One who eliminates mental wickedness from within the mind, and casts out emotional attachment and egotistical pride,
ਉਹ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹ
comes to recognize the All-pervading Soul, and is intuitively absorbed into the Naam.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ
O Siblings of Destiny, God is my Friend and Companion.
ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਦਾ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਪੱੁਤਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਥੀ (ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Emotional attachment to children and spouse is poison; in the end, no one will go along with you as your helper. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ
O my mind, focus your consciousness on the One.
ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ (ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ) ਜੰਜਾਲ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । (ਤੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Without the One, all entanglements are worthless; emotional attachment to Maya is totally false. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! (ਤੂੰ ਭੀ) ਉਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਬਣਾ
O Siblings of Destiny, make God your Friend.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿਸਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Cursed is emotional attachment and love of Maya; no one is seen to be at peace. ||1||Pause||
ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਤਮ ਇਹੀ ਅਕਲ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਕਮਾਏ ਜਾਣ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਘੜਿਆ ਜਾਏ)
Act according to the Instructions of the True Guru; this is the true philosophy.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਹ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਜੋ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ (ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
Without being attuned to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all attachment to Maya is just dust. ||1||
ਧਨ ਨੇ, ਜੁਆਨੀ ਨੇ, ਲੋਭ ਨੇ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੇ, (ਸਾਰੇ) ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਲੁੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ
The world is deceived and plundered by riches, youth, greed and egotism.
ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਠੱਗਬੂਟੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਮੋਹ-ਠੱਗਬੂਟੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
The drug of emotional attachment has destroyed me, as it has destroyed the whole world. ||1||
ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਮੋਹ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਵੇਖ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਕੁੱਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ
Whatever is seen shall pass away. So do not be attached to this false show.
(ਜੀਵ ਇਥੇ) ਰਸਤੇ ਦਾ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਿਰ (ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਿੱਤ ਚਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝ ।੨।
Like a traveller in his travels, you have come. Behold the caravan leaving each day. ||2||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ) ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ
Beholding your family, you are lured away by emotional attachment, but when you leave, they will not go with you.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ (ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ) ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ,
Serving the True Guru, I have found the Treasure of Excellence. Its value cannot be estimated.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ
In this world of my father's house, through the Guru's Teachings, I have cultivated within my mind the Great Giver, the Life of the World.
ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Night and day, performing devotional worship, day and night, ego and emotional attachment are removed.
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ (ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
Emotional attachment to Maya is shed with intuitive ease, through the Guru's Teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਦੁਖੀ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਗ੍ਰਸੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Without the Shabad, the world wanders lost in pain. The self-willed manmukh is consumed.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Emotional attachment to Maya is created by my God; He Himself misleads us through illusion and doubt.
(ਉਸ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਇਹ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ (ਕਿ ਅਸੀ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ) । (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukhs perform their actions, but they do not understand; they waste away their lives in vain.
ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਛਾਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Without intuitive balance, all are blind. Emotional attachment to Maya is utter darkness.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ (ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ)
In intuitive balance, understanding of the True, Infinite Shabad is obtained.
ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਨੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨੇ ਮੋਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜੇ ਉਸ ਸ਼ੂਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਸਦਾ) ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇ
When you are under the power of sexual desire, anger and worldly attachment, or a greedy miser in love with your wealth;
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਉੱਘੇ ਪਾਪ-ਅਪਰਾਧ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ, ਜੇ ਉਹ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਭੈੜਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵ
if you have committed the four great sins and other mistakes; even if you are a murderous fiend
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ) ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ
By Guru's Grace, I have found God.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
By His Grace, I have shed emotional attachment to Maya.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! (ਬਾਲ ਉਮਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਰਚਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਉਮਰੇ) ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦਾ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਾਲ (ਬੜਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਦਾ ਪੱੁਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ (ਇਹ) ਮੋਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ (ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)
You drink milk, and you are fondled so gently, O my merchant friend. The mother and father love their child so much, but in Maya, all are caught in emotional attachment.
ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲੋਭੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਲੋਭ ਦੀਆਂ) ਲਹਿਰ ਉੱਠਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
He is entangled in emotional attachment to his wife and sons, O my merchant friend, and deep within him, the waves of greed are rising up.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਸਮੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ
As Gurmukh, remember the Naam, O mortal; in the end, it shall be your only companion.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮੋਹ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਠਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
This emotional attachment to Maya shall not go with you; it is false to fall in love with it.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਤੰੂ ਆਪਣੇ (ਸੇਵਕ) ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ
O Lord, You meet and merge with those whom you have made Your Own.
(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਤੂੰ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਜਸ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ (ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਤੰੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।੧।
You Yourself are entranced, O Nanak, hearing Your Own Praises. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਚਿੱਤ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ) ਕੀਰਨੇ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
Those who focus their consciousness on emotional attachment to Maya must leave; they depart crying out in despair.
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਹਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, his only Companion in the end. ||1||
(ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਪਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਡਤ ਲੋਕ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
The Pandits, the religious scholars, constantly read and recite the Vedas, for the sake of the love of Maya.
(ਵੇਦ-ਪਾਠੀ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਦੰਡ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
In the love of duality, the foolish people have forgotten the Lord's Name; they shall receive their punishment.
(ਇਹੀ) ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਚੱਲਿਆਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ । ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਨਸ਼ਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Name is obtained, while the self-willed manmukh wastes away in emotional attachment.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰ (ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਹ) ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ ।੨।
Please protect me, by the Pleasure of Your Will. Nanak is Your slave. ||2||
ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਉੱਚੀ ਸੁਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read, and shout out loud, but they are attached to the love of Maya.
(ਉਹ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਮਨੋਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ (ਹੀ ਹੈ)
They do not recognize God within themselves-they are so foolish and ignorant!
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-ਪਿਆਰ (ਨਿਰਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ
Attachment to Maya is an ocean of darkness; neither this shore nor the one beyond can be seen.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਖ ਮੋੜਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀਣ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ) ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਬੜਾ ਦੱੁਖ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
The ignorant, self-willed manmukhs suffer in terrible pain; they forget the Lord's Name and drown.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ! ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਬਹੁਤ (ਜ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਹੈ; ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਹੈ, ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣੀ ਹੈ
The mind is totally attached to Maya; the mortal has forgotten his fear of old age and death.
ਹੇ ਖੋਟੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਉਂ ਖਿੜਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਉਲ ਫੁੱਲ (ਸੂਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ), ਤੂੰ ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।੧।
Gazing upon his family, he blossoms forth like the lotus flower; the deceitful person watches and covets the homes of others. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ! ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਅਜਿਹੇ ਡਾਢੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਰਾਹੇ ਤੁਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਨਾਹ ਸੂਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਦਖ਼ਲ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਥੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਦਿਨੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ)
The path you must walk is treacherous and terrifying, O mortal; neither the sun nor the moon shine there.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਣ ਲੱਗੋਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮੋਹ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੰਬੰਧ ਅਵੱਸੋਂ) ਛੱਡੇਂਗਾ ਹੀ (ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁਣੇ ਹੀ ਛੱਡਦਾ ?) ।੩।
Your emotional attachment to Maya will be forgotten, when you have to leave this world. ||3||
(ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਤੰੂ ਬਾਲਪੁਣੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ
You play like a child, craving sweets; moment by moment, you become more entangled in emotional attachment.
(ਹੁਣ ਜਦੋਂ) ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ ਵਿਹੁ ਨੂੰ ਰਸਦਾਇਕ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਚੱਖਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੰਜੇ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਖੁਲੇ੍ਹ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਤਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ
Tasting good and bad, you eat nectar and then poison, and then the five passions appear and torture you.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੂਤ ਵੱਸ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ)
My mind has entered their Sanctuary.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਤਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
I have renounced my pride in my own strength, and the darkness of emotional attachment.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Center your awareness on seva-selfless service-and focus your consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Subduing your ego, you shall find a lasting peace, and your emotional attachment to Maya will be dispelled. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖਦਾ ।
Being in love with Maya, they do not think of the Lord.
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Bound and gagged in the City of Death, they suffer in terrible pain.
ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋੇਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਵੇਸਲਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)
This world is asleep in emotional attachment to Maya.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਭੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਇਸ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ।
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, it ultimately comes to ruin.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੜਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
In love with duality and Maya, their minds wander, unfocused.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਸਾਰੀ ਸੂਝ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਔਗੁਣ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
The love of Maya has displaced all their understanding; making mistakes, they live in regret. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੇਰੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is seen within one's own heart.
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Through the Shabad, I have burned my emotional attachment to Maya.
ਸਗੋਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹੇ ।
Consumed by desire, they have no understanding at all.
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਇੱਕਠੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ੍ਰਹ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ) ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ।੭।
They purchase poison, and they are thirsty with their fascination for poison. Telling lies, they eat poison. ||7||
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
When the Immaculate Naam comes to dwell in the mind,
(ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
the mind and body become Immaculate, and emotional attachment to Maya departs.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ,
The Immaculate Ambrosial Nectar is obtained from the Guru.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ।
When selfishness and conceit are eradicated from within, then there is no attachment to Maya.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, merge your mind with the Supreme Mind.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਸਧਾਰੀਆ ਰਾਸ ਪਾਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਰਾਗ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Let your true and perfect tune be the subjugation of your love of Maya, and let yourself dance to the Shabad. ||3||
(ਉਂਞ ਉਹ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤੱਕ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
but if they are emotionally attached to Maya, then the Messenger of Death shall hunt them down.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਹੀ) ਨਚਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਛਲ ਹੈੇ । (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੀ ਰਾਸ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੱੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।
The love of Maya makes this mind dance, and the deceit within makes people suffer in pain. ||4||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ (ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ) ਗ਼ਮੀ (ਤੋਂ ਘਬਰਾਹਟ) ਮੁਕਾ ਲਈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਸਾਰਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ।
Pleasure and pain, and all emotional attachments are gone.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।
I am lovingly centered on the One Lord forever. I enshrine the Lord's Name within my mind. ||4||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ;
He Himself is Maya, and He Himself is the Illusion.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ।
He Himself has generated emotional attachment throughout the entire universe.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੱੁਝਦਾ ।
They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ।੬।
They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
The whole world is engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya.
ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ।
Those who are controlled by the three qualities are attached to Maya.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who burn away their emotional attachment to Maya, through the Shabad.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿਤ ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Those who burn away this attachment to Maya, and focus their consciousness on the Lord are honored in the True Court, and the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਹ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ, ਨਾਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਨਾਹ ਧਨ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਭਦਾ ਇਕ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ ।
Neither son, nor spouse, nor wealth shall go along with you-only the Eternal Lord.
ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਧੰਧੇ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਹੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ) ਮਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
Entangled and enmeshed in the love of false occupations, the whole world is perishing.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਜੰਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਠਗ ਬੂਟੀ ਖੁਆ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Administering the drug of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਮੋਹ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਬਥੇਰੇ ਜੀਵ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰੰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਾਰ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਨ ।
Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਜਦੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਵੇ (ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ) ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Those who follow the Guru's Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will.
(ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਕਾਮ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਝੂਠ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵੇ, ਜੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਭੀ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਏ,
Renounce sexual desire, anger, falsehood and slander; forsake Maya and eliminate egotistical pride.
ਜੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Renounce sexual desire and promiscuity, and give up emotional attachment. Only then shall you obtain the Immaculate Lord amidst the darkness of the world.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਰਾਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪੰਛੀ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਸੇਰਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰੈਣ-ਬਸੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ),
At night, lots of birds settle on the tree.
ਕੋਈ ਸੁਖੀ ਹਨ ਕੋਈ ਦੁਖੀ ਹਨ, ਕਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Some are happy, and some are sad. Caught in the desires of the mind, they perish.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukhs are asleep, in love and attachment to Maya.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Gurmukhs are awake, contemplating spiritual wisdom and the Glory of God.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਕੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ ।
All other loves and emotional attachment to Maya are false.
ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿਰਾ ਕੱਚ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੀ ਹੈ ।
They shall pass away, like false and transitory decorations.
ਸੌਦਾਗਰ ਸੌਦਾਗਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The traders buy horses, planning to trade them.
(ਸੌਦਾਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ) ਧਨ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ (ਹੋਰ ਧਨ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਉਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਧਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They hope to earn wealth; their attachment to Maya increases.
ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ) ਹੈ
The shop-keepers collect poison, sitting in their shops, carrying on their business.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਨਿਰਾ) ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠ ਦਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਧੀਕ ਰੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਉਂ) ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Their love is false, their displays are false, and they are engrossed in falsehood.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ (ਤਾਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾਣ ਲਈ ਫਾਹੀ ਹੈ ।
This emotional attachment to Maya and family, and the love of duality, is a noose around the neck.
ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Following the Guru's Teachings, the humble servants are carried across; they become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.
ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਸੋਨੇ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.
ਘਰ, ਪੱਕੇ ਮਹਲ ਘੋੜੇ (ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ (ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The mind has become attached to the pleasures of houses, palaces, horses and other enjoyments.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਝੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Those who have not met the Guru, the True Guru, are foolish and insane - they are faithless cynics.
(ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ ?) ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ) ਨੀਵੇਂ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਇਉਂ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਦੀਵੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਪਤੰਗੇ) ।੩।
Those who were pre-ordained to have no good karma at all - gazing into the lamp of emotional attachment, they are burnt, like moths in a flame. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਣ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
By the kind Mercy of the Saints, emotional attachment and doubt are removed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜੀ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ (ਸਾਰ) ਹੈ ।
Taking a bath in the dust of the feet of the Holy - this is true Dharmic faith.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਸ਼ੂ (ਪੱਠਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਢਿੱਡ ਭਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Like beasts, they consume all sorts of tasty treats.
ਤੇ (ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਫੜੇ ਹੋਏ) ਚੋਰਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਰੱਸੀ ਨਾਲ (ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਧੀਕ) ਜਕੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
With the rope of emotional attachment, they are bound and gagged like thieves. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਵੇਖ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਭਰਮ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ,
The Guru has dispelled pride, emotional attachment and superstition.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਏ ।੪।੮੧।੧੫੦।
Nanak sees the Supreme Lord God pervading everywhere. ||4||81||150||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਭਟਕਣ ਦੀ ਖੂਹੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਸਕੇ (ਉਸ ਖੂਹੀ ਵਿਚ) ਚਿੱਕੜ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਹੋਈ) ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਬੜੀ ਪੱਕੀ (ਤ੍ਰਿੱਖੀ) ਹੈ ।
Superstition is the well, thirst for pleasure is the mud, and emotional attachment is the noose, so tight around your neck.
ਇਸ ਫਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਣ-ਜੋਗਾ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਹੀ ਹੈ । (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਸ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ-ਕਮਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖ ।੧।
The only one who can cut this is the Guru of the World, the Lord of the Universe. So let yourself dwell at His Lotus Feet. ||1||
(ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਪਰਦਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The Unseen Lord is deep within the self; He cannot be seen; the curtain of egotism intervenes.
ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ । (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦੱਸ, (ਜੀਵ ਦੀ) ਇਹ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋਵੇ? ।੧।
In emotional attachment to Maya, all the world is asleep. Tell me, how can this doubt be dispelled? ||1||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਤਦ ਮੈਂ (ਜਗਤ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ।
The Guru has shown me that this is the way of the world; I have abandoned the dwelling of pride, and entered Your Sanctuary.
ਗੁਰੂ-ਸੰਤ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਣ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਦੱਸ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।੪।੬।੧੨੭।
The Saint has shown me the Path of God; slave Nanak has implanted devotional worship and the Praise of the Lord. ||4||6||127||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਬੀਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਜੀਵ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਕੁਝ) ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
That which pleases His Will has come to pass; no one else can do anything.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।੨।
By Your Will, enticed by the illusion of emotional attachment, the people are asleep; they do not wake up. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ)—ਹੇ (ਮੈਂ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਣ ਦੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ! ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਕਾਮ ਵਿਚ, ਕਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ, ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।
My mind is engrossed in sexual desire, anger, greed and attachment, O Giver to the unworthy.
ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੪।੧।੧੩੮।
Please grant Your Grace, and bless me with Your Name; Nanak is forever a sacrifice to You. ||4||1||138||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਤੇ) ਦੂਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Infatuated with emotional attachment, they think that God is far away.
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੧।੧੩੯।
Says Nanak, he is Ever-present! ||4||1||139||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Worship and adore the Lord, Har, Har, Har.
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਨੂੰ, ਮੋਹ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਡਰ-ਸਹਮ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
In the Society of the Saints, He dwells in the mind; doubt, emotional attachment and fear are vanquished. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਕੋਈ ਸੁਚੱਜੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦੀ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਢੰਗੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਖੋਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਢੰਗਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
I am the lord, the master of my mind, body, wealth and lands. These are mine.
(ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਹੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ—) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਦਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ (ਧਨ ਆਦਿ) ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਾਂ, ਇਹ ਧਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
In doubt and emotional attachment, this person understands nothing; with this leash, these feet are tied up. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ!) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮ ਦੇ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The mortal beings are held in the power of sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment; they have forgotten the Lord, the Immortal Form.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਤ ਵੇਲੇ (ਸੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਜੇਹੜਾ) ਸੁਪਨਾ (ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੀਂਦਰ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲੀ ਵਾਪਰ ਰਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
The body is false, but they believe it to be true; it is like a dream in the night. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ!) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖੋ ।
Renounce your egotistical pride and your emotional attachment to Maya; focus your consciousness on the Lord's meditation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ—ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਸੀ ਇਹ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਸਕੋਗੇ ।੨।੫।
Says Nanak, this is the path to liberation. Become Gurmukh, and attain it. ||2||5||
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਇਹ ਮਨ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਬੜੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਇਸ ਜਨਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
Having obtained this human body, so very difficult to obtain, it is now being uselessly wasted.
(ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ) ਜੰਗਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਲ ਨਕਾ-ਨਕ ਭਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ) ਇਸ (ਜੰਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Emotional attachment to Maya is such a treacherous wilderness, and yet, people are in love with it. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ!) ਲੋਭ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਨ, ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ, ਗ਼ਮੀ—(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ।੧।
Greed, emotional attachment to Maya, possessiveness, the service of evil, pleasure and pain - those who are not touched by these, are the very embodiment of the Divine Lord. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਰਗ ਅਤੇ ਨਰਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Heaven and hell, ambrosial nectar and poison, gold and copper - these are all alike to them.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਭੀ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ (ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰੇ, ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ—ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਹਨ), ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਮੋਹ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੨।
Praise and slander are all the same to them, as are greed and attachment. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾਰੇ (ਮਾਇਕ) ਬੰਧਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Emotional attachment to Maya is total entanglement.
(ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ) ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੰਦਾ ਭੈੜਾ ਤੇ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukh is filthy, cursed and dreadful.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਟ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਲੋਕ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਵੇਖਣ ਆ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨਟ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ (ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ) ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਰਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.
(ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ) ਚੰਬੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,
The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Putting on religious robes, they act so clever,
(ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਧਰਮੀ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਤੀਰਥ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਾ) ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲਾ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਥਾਂ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He washes outwardly, but within, his mind is filthy; thus he loses his place in both worlds.
ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ, ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਗਾਂਹ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਹਟਕੋਰੇ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Here, he is engrossed in sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment; hereafter, he shall sigh and weep. ||1||
(ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਦੱਬੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
You are burdened with desire, emotional attachment and egotism;
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਮੰਦ-ਭਾਗਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ) ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੩।
it is not the fault of God the Creator. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ,
Attached to Maya, the whole world is in bondage.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
The foolish self-willed manmukhs are consumed by their egotism.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕਾਮ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ—ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ।
In sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and self-conceit, peace is not to be found.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੁ । ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ ।
So be the dust of the feet of all, O my mind, and then you shall find bliss, joy and peace. ||2||
