(ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਹਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ,
Countless fools, blinded by ignorance.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਚੋਰ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਮਾਲ (ਚੁਰਾ ਚੁਰਾ ਕੇ) ਵਰਤ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।
Countless thieves and embezzlers.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੁਕਰ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ,
So many take and take again, and then deny receiving.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ (ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਖਾਹੀ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ)।
So many foolish consumers keep on consuming.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਨਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਜਤੀ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਸਤੀ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਤਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੇਸਮਝਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਤ, ਸਤ ਅਤੇ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਇਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਡਿਗਣੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ । ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜਤ ਸਤ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਮਹਾਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ।
I am not celibate, nor truthful, nor scholarly. I was born foolish and ignorant into this world.
ਸੋ, ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ) ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ (ਰੱਖ), ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲੀ) ।੨।੩।
Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who have not forgotten You, O Lord! ||2||3||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਮਨ ! ਸੁਣ, ਫਿੱਕਾ (ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ) ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਿਆਂ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਉਹੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੀ ਰਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ)
Harsh words bring only grief. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind!
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ । ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹੀ ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
Those who are pleasing to Him are good. What else is there to be said? ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਹੈ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹ
This foolish mind is greedy; through greed, it becomes even more attached to greed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰੁਚੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦੀ, ਇਸ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
The evil-minded shaaktas, the faithless cynics, are not attuned to the Shabad; they come and go in reincarnation.
(ਇਹ ਕੰਮ) ‘ਅਸਾਂ’ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ‘ਅਸੀ’ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ, (ਇਉਂ) ‘ਅਸੀ ਅਸੀ’ ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਉਜੱਡ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
I have done this, and I will do that-I am an idiotic fool for saying this!
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ
I have forgotten the Doer of all; I am caught in the love of duality.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਸਹਾਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹ
O my True Guru, without You I have no other at all.
ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ, (ਪਰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਨ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary. Please be Merciful and unite me with the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂਰਖ (ਅਕਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਤੇ ਮਤਿ-ਹੀਣ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
Attached to duality, the foolish, blind and stupid people waste away and die.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਕੀੜੇ ਵਿਲੂੰ ਵਿਲੂੰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
Like worms, they live in manure, and in it, they die over and over again.
(ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਪਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਡਤ ਲੋਕ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
The Pandits, the religious scholars, constantly read and recite the Vedas, for the sake of the love of Maya.
(ਵੇਦ-ਪਾਠੀ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਦੰਡ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
In the love of duality, the foolish people have forgotten the Lord's Name; they shall receive their punishment.
ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਉੱਚੀ ਸੁਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read, and shout out loud, but they are attached to the love of Maya.
(ਉਹ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਮਨੋਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ (ਹੀ ਹੈ)
They do not recognize God within themselves-they are so foolish and ignorant!
(ਆਪਣੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਨਾਲ) ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ
No one is foolish, and no one is clever.
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ) ਸਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੀ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ
Your Will determines everything;
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ-ਪਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦੇ,
The blind and ignorant fools do not serve the True Guru;
ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੇ ।
how will they find the gate of salvation?
(ਪਰ ਇਸ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ) ਮੂਰਖ (ਜੀਵ) ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ (ਮੂਲ ਬਣਦਾ) ਹੈ ।
The fools enjoy their pleasures; they must also endure all their pains.
ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਭੋਗਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਗ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
From pleasures, arise diseases and the commission of sins.
(ਭੋਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਚਿੰਤਾ (ਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
From sinful pleasures come sorrow, separation, birth and death.
ਮੂਰਖ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਲੰਮਾ ਝੰਬੇਲਾ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The fools try to account for their misdeeds, and argue uselessly.
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ (ਥਿੱਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ) ਪੜੇ੍ਹ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ ।
That scholar who is full of greed, arrogant pride and egotism, is known to be a fool.
(ਕਿਸੇ ਥਿੱਤ ਮੁਹੂਰਤ ਦੇ ਭਰਮ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ।
So read the Name, and realize the Name, and contemplate the Guru's Teachings.
ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪੱਕੇ (ਘਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
Those solid and beautiful mansions-the fools think that they belong to them.
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿ) ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਇਕ ਪਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The treasure-houses, filled with wealth, shall be emptied out in an instant.
ਲੋਹੇ ਦਾ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਈਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਢਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਕਪਾਹ (ਵਰਗਾ ਨਰਮ) ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ।
You may add flux to iron and melt it, but it will not become soft like cotton.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਇਹੀ ਖ਼ੋਆਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਕਿਤਨੀ ਮਤ ਦਿਓ, ਉਹ ਜਦੋਂ ਭੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ (ਉਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ) ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇ ।੬।
O Nanak, this is the nature of a fool-everything he speaks is useless and wasted. ||1||
(ਸੋ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨਾਲ ਜਗਤ (ਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਰ) ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.
ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਮਾਰ ਪਿਆਂ ਮੂਰਖ (ਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ-ਪੁਣੇ) ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਮਨ ! ਸੁਣ ।
Listen, you foolish and ignorant mind
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਵਰਤੇਗੀ (ਲੋਬ ਲੋਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਸਿੱਖ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
- only His Will prevails. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਕ ਰਾਸਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਗਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The fools perform devotional worship by showing off;
(ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਸਾਂ ਪਾਣ ਵੇਲੇ) ਨੱਚ ਨੱਚ ਕੇ ਟੱਪਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain.
ਜੋਗੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ) ਗੋਰਖ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੱਸੀਆਂ ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਟੇਕ ਬਣਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ),
the Yogi cries out, "Gorakh, Gorakh".
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੇ (ਪੰਡਿਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਪ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।
But I am just a fool - I just chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਚਰਜ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨਿਰੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਚਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਿਗਾਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਪਰ)
renouncing other men's women, he practices celibacy.
ਹਰੀ ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
I am just a fool, Lord; I place my hopes in You! ||2||
ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵੈਸ਼ ਭੀ (ਵਣਜ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਭੀ ਤੇ ਵੈਸ਼ ਭੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਨਿਰੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ,
The Shoodra and the Vaisha work and slave for others;
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ (ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
I am just a fool - I am saved by the Lord's Name. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ ! ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ) ਰੱਖ ।
O my Lord, I am so foolish; save me, O my Lord God!
ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Your servant's praise is Your Own Glorious Greatness. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼,
I am foolish - save me, O my Lord!
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
O Lord, enjoin me to work and serve the Guru, the True Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਕੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The fools - their bodies are bound down by desires.
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They are mired in sexual desire, anger and attachment;
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ (ਵਿਲਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਸੁਪਨੇ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ?
Why are you screaming and shouting, you fool?
(ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ) ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ (ਪਿਛਲੇ) ਸੰਜੋਗ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਆਦਿਕ ਸੰਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਇਆ ਹੈਂ (ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਇਹ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਕਾਇਮ ਹੈ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
By good destiny and the Lord's Order, you have come into the world. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਾ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਝਾਉਣੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਹਿ ਰਹਿਣਾ, ਫਿਰ) ਉਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਅੱਖੀਂ ਭੀ ਵੇਖ ਲਈਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਸਭ ਤੁਰੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ)
The riddles and hints are given, and he sees them with his eyes.
ਪਰ ਜੀਵ ਐਸਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਭੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਅਜੇਹੀ) ਆਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਗੱਲ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ ।੨।
But he is foolish and greedy, and he never listens to what he is told. ||2||
ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਤਿ-ਹੀਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ, ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨੇ੍ਹ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ ।
I am senseless, foolish, idiotic and blind, but the True Guru has placed me on the Path.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਸੋਹਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are adorned with the Shabad; night and day, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ (ਐਸਾ) ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ
The Great Giver is alive forever.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ?
O foolish mind, why have you forgotten Him?
ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ।
Whatever He gives, He gives once and for all.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ?
O foolish mind, why do you complain, and cry out so loud?
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ (ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ) ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who takes pride in wealth and lands
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਬੜਾ ਜਾਹਿਲ ਹੈ ।
is a fool, blind and ignorant.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! (ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੇ) ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਲਕਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
O foolish mind, why do you cry and bewail?
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਬੀਜੇ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਹੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
You shall obtain your pre-ordained destiny.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਧਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
Your wealth shall not go with you;
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੱਫਾ ਮਾਰੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ?
why do you cling to it, you fool?
(ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਥੋੜੇ ਦਿਨ) ਹੀ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ, (ਹਰੇਕ ਨੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ-ਰੂਪ) ਸਹੁਰੇ ਘਰ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ
For a few short days, the soul-bride stays in her parent's house; then, she must go to her in-laws.
ਅੰਞਾਣਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਜਗਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ।੧।
The blind, foolish and ignorant people do not know this. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਜਤੀ ਹਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਸਤੀ ਹਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਤਾਂ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
I am not a celibate, nor am I truthful, nor a scholar; I was born foolish and ignorant.
(ਸੋ) ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ) ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ (ਰੱਖ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲੀ) ।੨।੨੯।
Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who do not forget You, Lord. ||2||29||
ਇਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ (ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ) ਮੂਰਖ ਭੈੜਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਨਿਰੀ ਵਿੱਦਵਤਾ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹਤਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਸਫਲਤਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ)
By himself, no one is literate, learned or wise; no one is ignorant or evil.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਬੰਦਾ ਅਖਵਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੨।੩੬।
When, as a slave, one praises the Lord, only then is he known as a human being. ||4||2||36||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਯਾਦ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ,
O foolish Brahmin, reflect upon God.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ) ਵੇਖਦਾ (ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਦਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He watches and hears, and is always with you.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੂਰਖ-ਪੁਣਾ ਤੇ ਅਮੋੜ-ਪਨ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
The stubborn foolishness of my mind is gone;
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਅੜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੂਰਖਪੁਣੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਅੜਦੇ ਸਨ) ।੨।
God's Will has become sweet to me. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮਤਿ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ
I am foolish, stupid, ignorant and thoughtless;
(ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਿਰਦ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ), ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਬਿਰਦ-ਪਾਲ) ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਨ-ਆਏ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖੇਂਗਾ) ।੨।
Your Name is my mind's only hope. ||2||
(ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ।
He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
Throughout the three worlds, is the one Maya.
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਆਦਿਕ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਗੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ ਪੱਕਾ ਕੀਤਾ ।
The fool reads and reads, but holds tight to duality.
ਹੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਕੌਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ! (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ, ਅਸੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ ।
I am foolish and ignorant, but I have taken to His Sanctuary; may I merge in the Love of the Lord of the Universe, O Lord King.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Through the Perfect Guru, I have obtained the Lord, and I beg for the one blessing of devotion to the Lord.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸ ਪਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਏ ।
Show me my Lord God, my Love, O Guru; meeting the Lord, my mind is pleased.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ।੩।
I am just a fool, O Nanak, but the Lord has appointed me to perform His service. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ?
I am a fool, and I know nothing. How can I find Your limits?
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੈ ।੩।
Servant Nanak is the slave of the Lord, the water-carrier of the slaves of the Lord. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਗੰਵਾਰ! ਤੂੰ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਵਲ-ਛਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਪੇਟ ਭਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
Practicing deceit, you fill your belly, you ignorant fool!
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਭੁੱਲ ਚੁਕੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾਤਾਰ (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਹਰੇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The Lord, the Great Giver, continues to give you everything.
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦੀ ਚਾਰ-ਦੀਵਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਇਹ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਕਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ (ਗਿਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਸਿਆਣਾ (ਪਰ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਏ ਤੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸਿਆਣਾ, ਜਦ ਤਕ ਇਸ ਹੱਦ-ਬੰਦੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਹੱਦਬੰਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ, ਭਾਵ)
In ego they are ignorant, and in ego they are wise.
ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ ।
They do not know the value of salvation and liberation.
ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਖਿੜਾਉ ਦੀ ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ, ਉਹ ਮਨਮੁਖ (ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਜਨਮ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਗਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
The fools do not know the Truth. The self-willed manmukhs waste their lives away in vain.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਣ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦਾ ।੮।
Why have they even come into the world? ||8||
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਆਪਣੀ ਪੱਤ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।
- the blind fool loses His honor.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਦਮ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
Without the Name, nothing is of any use.
ਉਹ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੂਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੁੱਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਸੰਗ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੋਧਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
They shout out loud, and sing epic poems and heroic stories.
ਪੜ੍ਹੇ-ਲਿਖੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਚਲਾਕੀਆਂ ਕਰਨੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਦਲੀਲਾਂ ਦੇਣੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ।
The fools call themselves spiritual scholars, and by their clever tricks, they love to gather wealth.
ਕੇਵਲ ਇਹ ਅੱਖਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਲਈਏ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ
Do not call anyone bad; read these words, and understand.
ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਝਗੜਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।੧੯।
Don't argue with fools. ||19||
ਰੁੱਖਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ) ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਰੱਦਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਥੁੱਕਾਂ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਫਿਟਕਾਰਾਂ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ।
The insipid person is discarded in the Court of the Lord, and the insipid one's face is spat upon.
(ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਹੀਣ) ਰੁੱਖੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ ਬੜੀ ਬੇਇੱਜ਼ਤੀ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੧।
The insipid one is called a fool; he is beaten with shoes in punishment. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਤਾਹੀਏਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You may listen to the Shaastras, but you do not understand, and so you wander from door to door.
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਉਹ (ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਭੀ) ਮੂਰਖ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ । ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ (ਕਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੪।
He is a fool, who does not understand his own self, and who does not enshrine love for the True Lord. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝ ਲਈ ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
One who knows this written account is acceptable and approved.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ (ਇਸ ‘ਆਕਾਰ’ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗਵਾਰ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, anyone who takes pride in himself is foolish and unwise. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਅਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।
The foolish mind has not yet reformed itself, although I have grown weary of continually instructing it.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।੩।੬।੩੮।੪੭।
O Nanak, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, singing the Songs of God. ||2||3||6||38||47||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਏ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਾਹ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
All sins and errors are erased, O my soul; with the Naam, the Gurmukh washes off this filth.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਡੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਮਹਾਂ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
By great good fortune, servant Nanak meditates on the Lord; even fools and idiots like me have been saved. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਨਿਆਸਰਾ ਹਾਂ, ਚੰਚਲ, ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ, ਨੀਚ ਤੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ ।
I am foolish, stupid, masterless, fickle, powerless, lowly and ignorant.
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ । ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈ ।੧।
Prays Nanak, I seek Your Sanctuary - please save me from coming and going in reincarnation. ||1||
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਕੁਝ ਵੱਡਾ) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
If some fool believes that he is the creator, he is blind, and acts in blindness.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, the Gurmukh understands the Hukam of the Lord's Command; the Lord showers His Mercy upon him. ||1||
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਦੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲੇਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ।
He does what is pre-ordained for him; no one can erase his destiny.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, lasting peace is found; the ignorant fools die screaming. ||3||
ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਅਸਲ) ਰਤਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ ।
The Jewel is the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the Knower alone knows it.
ਪਰ, ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਜਤਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The fools take pride in themselves, and are ruined in birth and death.
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ
The foolish, blind clown does not serve the True Guru.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਦੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਦੋਂ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾੜੇ ਘੱਤਦਾ ਹੈ
In love with duality, he endures terrible suffering, and burning, he cries out in pain.
ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗੁਣ ਹਨ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
Your Glories are so numerous, and I do not know even one of them; I am such a fool - please, give me some of them!
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਸੁਣ! ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ, ਮੈਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੱਥਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੱਢ ਲੈ ।੪।੪।
Prays Nanak, listen, O my Lord Master: I am sinking like a stone - please, save me! ||4||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਾਲਕ-ਰੂਪ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਚੰਡੂਰ, ਕੇਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਰਵਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।
The Beloved Himself assumed the form of the child, and killed the demons Chandoor, Kansa and Kaysee.
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਤਾਕਤ (ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਭੰਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The Beloved Himself, by Himself, is the embodiment of power; He shatters the power of the fools and idiots. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਮਨ! ਇਹ ਜਗਤ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ।
This whole world is engrossed in coming and going; O my foolish and ignorant mind, be mindful of the Lord.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Dear Lord, please, take pity upon me, and unite me with the Guru, that I may merge in the Lord's Name. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਭੀ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਰਿਜ਼ਕ ਆਦਿਕ) ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
God is the Lord and Master of millions of universes; He is the Giver of all beings.
ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ (ਸਭ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
He ever cherishes and cares for all beings, but the fool does not appreciate any of His virtues. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਸਭ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈਆਂ) ਸੁਣਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
The Compassionate Lord is Merciful to the meek, the ocean of peace; He fills all hearts.
ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੂਰ-ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸਮਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ।੨।
He sees, hears, and is always with me; but I am a fool, and I think that He is far away. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਵੇ ।੩।
I offer my prayer to my True Guru; I am so foolish - please, teach me! ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣਾ (ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਤਾਂ) ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਪਾਪੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।
I am just a fool, but millions of sinners just like me have been saved.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ । ਅਸੀ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਗੁਣ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ।
We are filthy, and You are immaculate, O Creator Lord; we are worthless, and You are the Great Giver.
ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਦਾਨਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ (ਸਾਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਬਣਾ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਹੁਨਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ।੧।
We are fools, and You are wise and all-knowing. You are the knower of all things. ||1||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਕਾਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਗਤੀ) ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲੈ;
O Lord, glorious and great is service to You; I am so foolish
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ;
- please, commit me to it. I am Your servant and slave; command me, according to Your Will.
ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ,
The Pandits are deluded, attached to duality, and they deal only in Maya.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਹੈ ਭੁੱਖ ਹੈ, ਗਵਾਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੀ ਮਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵੇਂ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ) (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਗਏ)
They are filled with thirst and hunger; the ignorant fools starve to death.
ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਥਾਂ ਕੁਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ, (ਕਿ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ
The fools do not know the difference between good and bad; they are deceived by their self-interests.
ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਣ ਤਾਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ-ਰੂਪ ਅਸਲ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਣ ।
But if they contemplate the Word of the Shabad, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and their light merges in the Light.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਲੋਕ (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਧਨ (ਹੀ) ਜੋੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
The ignorant fools amass false wealth.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The blind, foolish, self-willed manmukhs have gone astray.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਹਰੇਕ ਕੰਮ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ
We are ignorant; ignorance fills our minds.
ਸੋ ਜੋ ਅਸੀ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਗਹੁ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਾਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਅਸੀ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ ।
We do all our deeds in ego.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਬਾਰੇ) ਕਥਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ ।
Everyone speaks and talks; how great should I say He is?
ਮੈਂ (ਤਾਂ) ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਨੀਵੇਂ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਕੁਝ) ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
I am foolish, lowly and ignorant; it is only through the Guru's Teachings that I understand.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਸੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦੇ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਅਤੇ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈਂ
I am Your child; I know nothing about Your state and extent; I am foolish, idiotic and ignorant.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ ।੧।
O Lord, shower me with Your Mercy; bless me with an enlightened intellect; I am foolish - make me clever. ||1||
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
The fool attaches his consciousness to the dream.
ਇਸ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਹੀ ਬਰੜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ
When he awakes, he forgets the power, pleasures and enjoyments, and he is sad.
ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਤਾਂ) ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਦੀ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Those who become Pandits, religious scholars, recite the Vedas,
ਪਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕੇਵਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੨।੧।
but foolish Naam Dayv knows only the Lord. ||2||1||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਾਂਦਾ?
Why do you not sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, you ignorant fool?
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।੧।
You are attached to false greed, and you do not even consider death. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
In the very beginning, the Lord blessed His devotees with the Ambrosial Nectar, the treasure of devotion.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਈਰਖਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ, ਸਗੋਂ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੨।
Anyone who tries to compete with them is a fool; his face shall be blackened here and hereafter. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ (ਤਾਂ) ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਨੀਵੇਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗੀ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
I cannot describe the glorious greatness of the Lord; I am foolish, thoughtless, idiotic and lowly.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, (ਇਹ) ਅੰਞਾਣ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।੪।੪।੧੫।੨੪।
Please, forgive servant Nanak, O my Lord and Master; I am ignorant, but I have entered Your Sanctuary. ||4||4||15||24||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਝੂਠੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ (ਸੁਣ)
He competes with those who have been accepted by the Beloved Lord.
ਇਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੀਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਸਤਕਾਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
This is how stubborn the false fool is! ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਸਮਝਾ ਸਮਝਾ ਕੇ ਦੱਸਾਂ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ,
O my foolish mind, how can I teach and instruct you?
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ) ।੪।
As Gurmukh, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and so become attuned to His Love. ||4||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਕਲ-ਹੀਣ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ;
The blind fools have no wisdom at all; their understanding is blind.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ (‘ਨਾਮ’ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ।੨।
O Nanak, without the Lord's Grace, they will never receive honor. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ, (ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੂੰ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੀਆਂ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ।
You are the Emperor, and I call You a chief - how does this add to Your greatness?
(ਪਰ ਇਤਨੀ ਕੁ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ) ਜਿਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਬਲ ਤੰੂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਮੈਂ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ।੧।
As You permit me, I praise You, O Lord and Master; I am ignorant, and I cannot chant Your Praises. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਬੜੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਬੇ ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ (ਪਰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਹਾਂ ।
I am foolish, idiotic and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, O Primal Being, O Lord beyond birth.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਸਾਡੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ, ਅਸੀ ਪੱਥਰ (-ਦਿਲ) ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੰਦ-ਭਾਗੀ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
Have Mercy upon me, and save me, O my Lord and Master; I am a lowly stone, with no good karma at all. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The foolish faithless cynics are held captive by Maya; in Maya, they continue wandering, wandering around.
ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ) ਭੌਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਲੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਲਦ ਕੋਹਲੂ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਭੌਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Burnt by desire, and bound by the karma of their past actions, they go round and round, like the ox at the mill press. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ।
Keep me under Your Protection, God; shower me with Your Mercy.
ਮੈਂ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ । ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ-ਅਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।੧।
I do not know how to serve You; I am just a low-life fool. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ ।
I am a fool and an idiot, but the Lord showered me with His Mercy, and united me with Himself.
(ਮੇਰਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਸਲਾਹੁਣ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ੇ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ।
Blessed, blessed is the most wonderful Guru, who has conquered egotism.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਭਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾਈ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਿਕਲੇਗੀ,
Speaking with the Saints, one becomes generous.
ਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਖਪ-ਖਪਾ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ।੨।
To speak with a fool is to babble uselessly. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਸੇ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਓਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ; ਆ) ਮੈਂ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਵਾਂ (ਕਿ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Today, Naam Dayv saw the Lord, and so I will instruct the ignorant. ||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਤੇਰੀ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ (ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਗਊ ਦੀ ਜੂਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਇਹ) ਇਕ ਲੋਧੇ ਜੱਟ ਦੀ ਪੈਲੀ ਖਾਣ ਜਾ ਪਈ,
O Pandit, O religious scholar, your Gayatri was grazing in the fields.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗੀ ।
I do not know, Lord, what my condition shall be.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਹਾਂ, (ਪਰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ । ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਤੇ) ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Please, save my honor and my self-respect. ||1||Pause||
(ਪਰ) ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਵੇਚਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਆਜੀਵਕਾ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ । ਵਿਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ) ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੀ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukh sells his knowledge; he earns poison, and eats poison.
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੁਧ-ਬੁਧ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।੫੩।
The fool does not think of the Word of the Shabad. He has no understanding, no comprehension. ||53||
ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਉਹੀ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਕਹੇ ਉਹੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੋ ਆਪ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੋਵੇ ।
Only a fool listens to the words of the fool.
ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਲੱਛਣ ਕੀਹ ਹਨ? ਮੂਰਖ ਦੀ ਕਰਤੂਤ ਕੈਸੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ?
What are the signs of the fool? What does the fool do?
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।
A fool is stupid; he dies of egotism.
(ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ) ਮੂਰਖ ਮਤ-ਹੀਣ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੰਮ ਦਾ ਰੁੱਖ ਅੰਬ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅੰਬ ਦਾ ਬੂਟਾ ਨਿੰਮ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ;
He thinks that the bitter nimm fruit is a mango, and the mango is a bitter nimm. He imagines the ripe banana on the thorny bush.
ਪੱਕਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੇਲਾ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝਾੜੀਆਂ ਮਲੂਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਿੰਬਲ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਲੀਏਰ ਦਾ ਪੱਕਾ ਫਲ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
He thinks that the ripe coconut hangs on the barren simmal tree; what a stupid, idiotic fool he is! ||1||
ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Meditating on Him, the fool becomes wise.
ਸਾਰੀ ਕੁਲ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ) ।੧।
Meditating on Him, one's ancestors are saved. ||1||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤਾਂ ਦਾ) ਕਿਉਂ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
O foolish mind, why are you so proud?
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਖਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਏਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You shall have to arise and depart when it pleases your Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||
ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਹ ਵੇਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੀ ਹਨ ।
The fool may live with the Pandit, the religious scholar, and listen to the Vedas and the Shaastras.
ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਰਖਤਾ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੇ) । ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਪੂਛਲ (ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਟੇਡਾ-ਪਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੀ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੇ ਡੱਡੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ ।੪।
You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the crooked tail of the dog. ||4||
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ ।
No one, by himself, is ignorant or wise.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਮੂਰਖ ਜਾਂ ਗਿਆਨੀ) ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He alone chants the Naam, whom the Lord inspires to do so.
ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਬੰਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ (ਕਿਵੇਂ) ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਉਹ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੈ ।
I do not believe that anyone is foolish; I do not believe that anyone is clever.
(ਅਸਲ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
Imbued forever with the Love of my Lord and Master, I chant His Name, night and day. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਮਤਿ-ਹੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
O Baba, I am so foolish, but I am a sacrifice to the Name.
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You are the Creator, You are wise and all-seeing. Through Your Name, we are carried across. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰ ਚਾਹੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ (ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇਕੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The same person is foolish and wise; the same light within has two names.
ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਦੋ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਨਾਮ ਹਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੋ ਹੀ ਹੈ । ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਬੂਲਦਾ, ਉਹ ਮਹਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ।੨।
The most foolish of the foolish are those who do not believe in the Name. ||2||
ਮਨ ਦੀ ਗੰਦੀ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਗੰਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
False-minded, her actions are false.
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਤੀ-ਰੂਪ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ । ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ।੬।
The foolish person does not know the excellence of her Husband Lord. Without the Guru, she does not understand at all. ||6||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਬਹੁਤ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਦਾ ਹੀ) ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The great volumes of the Simritees and the Shaastras only extend the extension of attachment to Maya.
(ਨਾਮ ਵਲੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ) ਮੂਰਖ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ) ਸਮਝ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।੧੫।
The fools read them, but do not understand the Word of the Shabad. How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, understand. ||15||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ (ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ) ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ) ਭੇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The Simritees and the Shaastras do not know His limits.
(ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸਿਆ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The blind fool does not recognize the essence of reality.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
I am foolish and ignorant; I have no wisdom at all.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
From the True Guru, I have obtained understanding in my mind.
ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਦਰਦ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ।
- do not say anything to such an ignorant person.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਉਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਝੇੜਾ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ । ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।੫।
Do not argue with fools, O mortals. Meditate on the Lord, in the state of Nirvaanaa. ||5||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ! ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਕਾਈ ਨਾਹ ਖਾਹ,
Don't be fooled by gazing at the riches of Maya, you foolish self-willed manmukh.
ਇਹ (ਏਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੀ, ਸੋ, ਸਾਰੇ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠਾ (ਸਾਥੀ) ਜਾਣ ।
It shall not go along with you when you must depart; all the wealth you see is false.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਅਸਲ) ਵਪਾਰ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
The self-willed manmukh does not appreciate the excellence of trading in Truth. He deals in poison, collects poison, and is in love with poison.
ਉਹ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਤਾਂ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਹਨ,
Outwardly, they call themselves Pandits, religious scholars, but in their minds they are foolish and ignorant.
ਮੂਰਖ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ,
Says Kabeer, the fools, the idiots and the brutes do not remember the Lord.
ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ— ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ । (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੇਗਾ? ।੪।੧।
They do not know the Lord's Name; how can they be carried across? ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ (ਮੇਰੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦਬਾਈ ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖੇ) ।
O Saviour Lord, Inaccessible and Infinite, please hear my prayer.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਘੁੱਪ) ਹਨੇਰੀ (ਜੀਵਨ-) ਰਾਤ ਵਿਚ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ) ਸੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ।੧।
O Nanak, the fool never remembers Him; what can he see in the dark of night? ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੰੂਹ ਨਾਲ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਜਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The lamps of the sun and the moon are lit by the Guru's Teachings, through His Door, meditating on the True Lord, in the mind and with the mouth.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ (ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਪਹਰ ਬੀਤ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ) ਹੋੋਰ ਹੋਰ (ਪਿਆਰ) ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ।੨।
O Nanak, the fool still does not remember the Lord. How can he find peace in duality? ||2||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਗੰਵਾਰ! (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ।
Do not be proud of your social class and status, you ignorant fool!
ਇਸ ਮਾਣ-ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ (ਭਾਈਚਾਰਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਕਈ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਚੱਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
So much sin and corruption comes from this pride. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਕ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਹੀ ਨਿੱਤ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ (ਭੀ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ) ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The fools in duality read, but they do not understand anything; they waste their lives uselessly.
(ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਸੰਡ ਅਮਰਕ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ) ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਦੈਂਤ (ਹਰਨਾਖਸ਼) ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁਧ) ਭੜਕਾਇਆ ਸੀ ।੩।
The wicked demon slandered the Saint, and stirred up trouble. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰਣ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਭੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਤੀ,
I am a fool; the Lord has shown mercy to me.
ਤੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲਿਆ (ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ।੪।੨।
The Savior Lord has saved servant Nanak. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਜਾਣ (ਉਹ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਕੀਹ ਸਮਝੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ?
The six Shaastras may be read to a fool,
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ (ਨਿਰੀ) ਹਵਾ ਹੀ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ (ਇਹੀ ਹਾਲ ਹੈ ਸਾਕਤ ਦਾ) ।੩।
but it is like the wind blowing in the ten directions. ||3||
(ਲੋਕ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਲੰਕਾ ਦਾ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ
The fortress of Sri Lanka was made out of gold,
(ਪਰ ਇਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਉੱਤੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਵਣ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਲੈ ਤੁਰਿਆ ।੩।
but what could the foolish Raawan take with him when he left? ||3||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਭੇਖ ਆਦਿਕ ਉਤੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਵੱਡੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ ।
Only the foolish and the ignorant issue commands.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੋ । ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਕਰਣੀ) ।੪।੩।
O Nanak, the treasure of praise belongs to the True Lord alone. ||4||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ,
I am foolish and ignorant, O Lord; please be merciful to me.
(ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ ।੩।
May I remain in Your Sanctuary. ||3||
ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ) ਆਖਣਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਠੇਡੇ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਹੀ ਲਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ)
The blind fool is running around, leading the blind.
(ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।
The more they say, the more they expose themselves. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਕਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਕਿ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ।
What can be said, O Nanak? Who is blessed by the Creator?
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਵੱਡਾ) ਸਮਝਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
God keeps all under His Command, but the fool shows off himself. ||1||
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਿਓਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ।
The blind fools serve the three gunas, the three dispositions; they deal only with Maya.
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ (ਬਾਹਰ ਤਾਂ) ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਕਮਾਣ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ (ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖੋਟ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
With deception in their hearts, the fools read sacred texts to fill their bellies.
ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਨਿਰੀ) ਚਰਚਾ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਚਸਕੇ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ;
Reading and writing, the Pandits engage in debates and disputes; they are attached to the flavors of Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ;
In the love of duality, they forget the Naam. Those foolish mortals shall receive their punishment.
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-) ਵਸਤ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਭਾ ਦੀ ਬਿਗਾਨੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦੀ) ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਜਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The object belongs to someone else, but the fool is proud of it, and shows his shallow nature.
। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦ ਤਕ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਤਦ ਤਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, without understanding, no one obtains it; they come and go in reincarnation, over and over again. ||1||
ਮੰਗਤੇ (ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ) ਤੋਂ ਰਾਜ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਾਜੇ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
The beggar is transformed into a king, and the king into a beggar.
ਮਹਾਂ ਪੂਰਖ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਤੋਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The idiotic fool is transformed into a Pandit, a religious scholar, and the Pandit into a fool. ||3||
:— ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ।
I am meek, foolish and thoughtless, but still, You take care of me.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ, (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ (ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ।
Please be kind to me, and make me the slave of Your slaves, so that I may serve You.
Some are foolish, blind, stupid and ignorant.
Some, through fear of the True Guru, take the Support of the Naam.
ਪਰ) ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੱਚੇ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਟਕਾ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ ਮੂੰਹ-ਭਾਰ) ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
The false and foolish self-willed manmukhs are defeated and overcome.
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਲੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਹ ਛਿੰਞ ਦਾ) ਕਾਰਜ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The Lord Himself wrestles, and He Himself defeats them. He Himself staged this play.
; ਕਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੱਚ ਨੱਚ ਕੇ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ;
Some dance and dance and keep the beat, but they do not worship Him with devotion.
ਕਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਅੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ, ਪਰ (ਦੱਸੋ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ? (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਮਝਾਈਏ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ) ।
Some refuse to eat; what can be done with these fools?
ਆਪਣੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ, ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਸਦਾ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Tell me, who has ever found peace by following his own will? The blind act in blindness.
ਮੂਰਖ ਦੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਉਹ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
No one is ever satisfied and fulfilled by evil and corruption. The hunger of the fool is not satisfied.
ਕੰਗਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ (ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਨਾਮ (ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
The beggar is known as an emperor, and the fool is known as a religious scholar.
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਖੂ (ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)—(ਬੱਸ! ਜਗਤ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ (ਉਲਟੀਆਂ) ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The blind man is known as a seer; this is how people talk.
(ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਾਸ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗੀ) ਮੂਰਖ (ਪੰਡਿਤ) ਮਾਸ ਮਾਸ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom.
ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੈ (ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਗਹੁ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕਿ) ਮਾਸ ਤੇ ਸਾਗ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਹ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕਿਸ (ਦੇ ਖਾਣ) ਵਿਚ ਪਾਪ ਹੈ
What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin?
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੀਹ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ? ਅਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਕੀੜੇ ਹਾਂ । ਅਸੀ ਕੀਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ? ਸਾਡੀ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
I am such a worm! What karma am I creating? What can I do? I am a fool, a total idiot, but God has saved me.
ਅਸੀ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, (ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਰ ਨਾਲ) ਪੱਥਰ ਵਰਗੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਹਾਂ (ਅਸੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਤਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ?) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ, (ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
I am unworthy, heavy as stone, but joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, I am carried across to the other side. ||3||
ਹੇ ਦੈਂਤ-ਦਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸੇਵਕ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਉੱਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ । ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ) ਨਾਮ ਦੇਹ (ਮੈਂ ਨਿਤ) ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ।
Please be Kind to Your humble servant, Lord; please bless me with the meditation of Your Name.
। ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੧।
I am a blind fool; Your Name is my only Support. Servant Nanak, as Gurmukh, has found it. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ ।
O Nanak, you alone are foolish; all the rest of the world is good.
ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੪।੨।
That body in which the Naam does not well up - that body becomes miserable. ||4||2||
(ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਦ ਤਕ) ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਰਖਪੁਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਇਹ) ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਵਿਰਕਤ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਮਾਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਦਾਨੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਦੇ ਧਨ ਗਵਾਚਣ ਤੇ) ਕੰਗਾਲ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The mind is a Yogi, the mind is a pleasure-seeker; the mind is foolish and ignorant.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਖਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਰੱਬੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The mind is the giver, the mind is the beggar; the mind is the Great Guru, the Creator.
(ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਰਸਮ-ਰਿਵਾਜ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
If I remain silent, the world calls me a fool.
ਪਰ ਜੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਇਹ ਉਕਾਈਆਂ ਸਮਝਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਉ ਘਟਦਾ ਹੈ ।
If I talk too much, I miss out on Your Love.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ (ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ, ਰੇਚਕ ਪੂਰਕ ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
Running around chasing the entanglements of Maya is an evil-minded act of corruption.
ਮੂਰਖ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਤਾਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
The fool makes a show of his self-conceit; he does not know how to behave.
ਹੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨ! ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਹੇ ਅਮੋੜ ਮਨ! ਸ਼ੁਣ,
Listen, O blind, foolish, idiotic mind.
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਣੋਂ ਮੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਰੀ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਹੈ (ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਐਸਾ ਹੀ ਨਿਲੱਜ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਂਗਾ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Aren't you ashamed of your comings and goings in reincarnation? Without the Guru, you shall drown, over and over again. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ (ਭੀ) ਮੇਲ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
I have forsaken the advice of my ego.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ) ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਜ਼ਿੱਦੀ ਹੈ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿੱਦੀ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
The Guru has told me that this is foolish stubbornness.
ਜਿਸ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਉਹ (ਸਰੀਰ) ਤਾਂ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ ।
You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮ!(ਫਿਰ) ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ? ।੧।
Why don't you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਇਹ ਜਗਤ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਲੱਕੜ ਦਾ ਮਕਾਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਲੋਂ (ਮੱਲਾਂ ਮੱਲਣ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ;
Kabeer, the wooden house is burning on all sides.
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸਿਆਣੇ (ਬਣ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਬੈਠੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ) ਸੜ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਜੋ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਿਆਣਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ) ਮੂਰਖ (ਹਨ ਉਹ) ਇਸ ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਪਰੇ ਭੱਜ ਕੇ (ਸੜਨੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧੭੨।
The Pandits, the religious scholars, have been burnt to death, while the illiterate ones run to safety. ||172||
ਮੂਰਖ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਬੰਦੇ (ਨਿਰੀ) ਮਾਇਆ (ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਨ) ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
For the sake of Maya, the fools and ignorant people run all around.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨੮।
Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, life passes away uselessly. ||28||
