ਉਸ (ਹਰਿ-ਮੰਦਰ-ਕਿਲੇ੍ਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਪਉੜੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਬੇੜੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹੈ
The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਰੀਆ ਹੈ
The Guru is the Boat to carry me across the world-ocean; the Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Holy River.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੱੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੰਨ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਿਝਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ), ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ
Those who hear and believe in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, meditate on the Lord in their minds.
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ (ਭੀ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Night and day, they are steeped in devotion; their minds and bodies become pure.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਗ਼ਾਫਿਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ) ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜਕੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
Without the Guru, all are unconscious; they are held in bondage by the Messenger of Death.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ।੪।੧੦।੪੩।
O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, you shall be saved, contemplating the True Name. ||4||10||43||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਦਰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ
Without the Guru, the disease is not cured, and the pain of egotism is not removed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
By Guru's Grace, He dwells in the mind, and one remains immersed in His Name.
(ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ, ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ) ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ (ਜੁੜਦੀ) ਹੈ ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ
Embellished and immaculate is that place where the Saints gather together.
(ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੱੁਖ ਨੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਆਸਰਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
He alone finds shelter, who has met the Perfect Guru.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ-ਰੂਪ) ਪੈਂਡਾ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ
O All-knowing Lord, You are the True Way. The Shabad is the Navigator to ferry us across.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ-ਭਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
One who does not fear God shall live in fear; without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜੀਵ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਚੁਫੇਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ)
Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness; without the Shabad, understanding is not obtained.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ
Through the Guru's Teachings, you shall be enlightened; remain absorbed in the Love of the True Lord.
(ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਹੋਵੇ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਦਾ) ਥਾਂ-ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ
Those chaylaas, those devotees, whose spiritual teacher is blind, shall not find their place of rest.
(ਪੂਰੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਸੁਚੱਜਾ) ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ
Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained. Without the Name, what is the use of it all?
(ਹੇ ਬਾਬਾ ! ਮਾਇਆ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਖਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਨਾਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ) ਨਾਹ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Everyone makes mistakes; only the Guru and the Creator are infallible.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
One who instructs his mind with the Guru's Teachings comes to embrace love for the Lord.
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਵਾਂ, ਚਾਹੇ) ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵਾਂ) ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ)
In suffering and in comfort, I meditate on You, O Beloved.
ਇਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਅਕਲ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਲਈ ਹੈ
I have obtained this sublime understanding from the Guru.
ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਗੇਝ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹ
By the Grace of the Holy Saint, I have been attuned to the Lord.
ਹੁਣ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੇਰਾ (ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ), ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ (ਹੀ) ਸੇਵਕ (ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕਾ) ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਆਖ—) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੧੪।੨੧।
The Lord is mine, and I am the slave of the Lord. O Nanak, the Guru has blessed me with the True Word of the Shabad. ||4||14||21||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ ।
Whoever obtains the Sublime Essence of the Naam becomes immortal.
(ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-) ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The Treasure of the Naam is obtained by one whose mind is filled with the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਭਾਲਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The One, the Guru, who is sought by all-only a few, by great good fortune, receive His Darshan.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
His Place is lofty, infinite and unfathomable; the Guru has shown me that palace. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ (ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ (ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One who has my Beloved on his side, is liberated from the world-ocean.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਡਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।੩।
One who recognizes the Guru practices Truth; why should he be afraid? ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Those, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, come to meet the Guru.
(ਗੁਰੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ) ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੬।
Shedding their sins, His servants are forever pure; at the True Court, they are beautified by the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਉਸ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The ignorant ones are blind-there is only utter darkness for them.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਘੱੁਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਛਾਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without the Guru, there is only pitch-black darkness.
(ਇਸ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਗ੍ਰਸ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਪੁਕਾਰਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਿਲੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ।
Seized by the Messenger of Death, people cry out and scream.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ)
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Without the Guru, no one obtains intuitive wisdom; the Gurmukh is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ) ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs love the darkness.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਆਉਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ (ਇਸ ‘ਅੰਧ ਪਿਆਰ’ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Without the Guru, the world is drowning. ||2||
ਪੂਰੇ ਬੋਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ,
Through the perfect karma of good deeds, one meets the Perfect Guru, whose speech is perfect.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਲ ਘਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਭਾਵ, ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਦਾ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਘਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ) ।੨।
O Nanak, when the Guru makes one perfect, one's weight does not decrease. ||2||
(ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਭੀ ਹੈ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿੱਖਿਆ) ਵਿਚ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜਨ ਨਾਲ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜੇ ਇਹ ਸਿਰ-ਖੱੁਥੇ (ਇਸ ‘ਨਾਮ’-ਜਲ ਵਿਚ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਤਾਂ ਨਿਰੀ ਮੁਕਾਲਖ ਹੀ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
O Nanak, if the shaven-headed ones do not bathe, then seven handfuls of ashes are upon their heads. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ),
Without the Guru, everyone wanders in doubt.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਲੁਕਾਈ) ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Without the Name, they suffer in terrible pain.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Granting His Grace, He leads us to meet the True Guru.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਕੇਵਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Remembering the One Name, doubt is cast out from within.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ) ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਚਕਵੇ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਲਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Meeting her Beloved, all her pains are left behind.
ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The GurSikh loves to gaze upon the Face of the Guru. ||2||
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
its heart blossoms forth upon seeing its mother.
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੩।
The GurSikh loves to gaze upon the Face of the Guru. ||3||
ਮੈਂ ਰੁਲਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਸਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਵਾਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਪੁੱਛਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੀੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ।
I was rolling around in the dirt, and no one cared for me at all. In the Company of the Guru, the True Guru, I, the worm, have been raised up and exalted.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੋਗ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਏ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ।੪।੫।੧੧।੪੯।
Blessed, blessed is the Guru of servant Nanak; meeting Him, all my sorrows and troubles have come to an end. ||4||5||11||49||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ! ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਅਸੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਾਂ ।
O my Lord, we are just the ignorant children of our Lord God.
ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼-ਦਾਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Hail, hail, to the Guru, the Guru, the True Guru, the Divine Teacher who has made me wise through the Lord's Teachings. ||1||Pause||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਬਹੁਤ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ (ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਉਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਇਵਜ਼ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ (ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮੀ ਦਾ) ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਦਾਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।
My forehead has been branded with His brand; I owe such a great debt to the Guru.
(ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਬਹੁਤ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਭਲਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਸੀ ।
He has been so generous and kind to me; He has carried me across the treacherous and terrifying world-ocean. ||2||
(ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ) ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰਾਮ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ) ਲਗਨ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The All-pervading Sovereign Lord King is contained in each and every heart. Through the Guru, and the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I am lovingly centered on the Lord.
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਦੇਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਾਂ (ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ) ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਦੇਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਾਂ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Cutting my mind and body into pieces, I offer them to my Guru. The Guru's Teachings have dispelled my doubt and fear. ||2||
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਦੀਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਬਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਲਗਨ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ,
In the darkness, the Guru has lit the lamp of the Guru's wisdom; I am lovingly focused on the Lord.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਹੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
Hear my prayer, O God, my Lord and Master: I beg for the Sanctuary of the Lord God.
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ (ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ (ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ) ।੫।੧੦।੨੪।੬੨।
Servant Nanak's honor and respect is the Guru; he has sold his head to the True Guru. ||5||10||24||62||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਡੀ ਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਦੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
I am egotistical and conceited, and my intellect is ignorant. Meeting the Guru, my selfishness and conceit have been abolished.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਦੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
The illness of egotism is gone, and I have found peace. Blessed, blessed is the Guru, the Sovereign Lord King. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਇਕ ਰਸ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ), ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Through the Guru's Teachings, the unstruck music resounds; through the Guru's Teachings, the mind sings.
ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਸਦਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ, ਸਦਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ । ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ) ਲਗਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
By great good fortune, I received the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan. Blessed, blessed is the Guru, who has led me to love the Lord. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
My Lord and Master is the Perfect True Guru. My mind works to serve the Guru.
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
I massage and wash the Feet of the Guru, who recites the Sermon of the Lord. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ (ਹੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He unites with Himself those unto whom He has shown His Mercy.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਫਿਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
All treasures are received from the Guru.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰੋ ! ਸਦਾ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖੋ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆਂ)
Chant and meditate on the Guru, the Guru, O my friend.
ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਹੋਣਗੇ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Your face shall be radiant in the Court of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ)
Night and day, I meditate on the Guru, and the Name of the Guru.
ਉਸ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
Thus all my works are brought to perfection. ||2||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ।
One who understands the meaning of this verse is my Guru.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਪਾ ਪਛਾਣਨ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਅੱਗੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੮।
O Nanak, one who knows his own self, is infinite and incomparable. ||8||
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
Those whose guru is spiritually blind - their doubts are not dispelled.
(ਅਜੇਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਗੋਂ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ-ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Abandoning the Source of all, they have become attached to the love of duality.
ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ
Blessed, Blessed is the Guru, who sings the Glories of God. Unto Him, I bow forever and ever in deepest reverence.
(ਆਖ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।
Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to those who have meditated on the Creator Lord. ||1||
ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਟੁੱਭੀ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹ
Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.
, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ-ਵਿਕਾਰ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਦਮ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, with every breath and every morsel of food - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਆਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੱਡੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ) ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Great is the greatness of the Guru, who meditates on the Lord within.
ਪੂਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਇਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਘਟਾਇਆਂ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਘਟਦੀ ।
By His Pleasure, the Lord has bestowed this upon the Perfect True Guru; it is not diminished one bit by anyone's efforts.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਰਤੱਖ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਕ (ਗੁਰ ਤੋਂ) ਵਿੱਛੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਢੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ
Those who separate themselves from the Guru, in spite of His Constant Presence - they find no place of rest in the Court of the Lord.
ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਗ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਨਿਰੀ ਥੱੁਕ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਲੋਕ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਫਿਟਕਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)
If someone goes to meet with those dull-faced slanderers, he will find their faces covered with spit.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੰੁਦਿਆਂ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੱਥੀਂ) ਤਿਲਕ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ
Great is the greatness of that humble being, whom the Guru Himself anointed in His Presence.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨਿਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਲਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
All the world comes and bows to him, falling at his feet. His praises spread throughout the world.
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਉਹ ਪਿਉ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕੁਲ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਣਿਆ ਹੈ
Blessed, blessed is the father; blessed, blessed is the family; blessed, blessed is the mother, who gave birth to the Guru.
। ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ; (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਤਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਡਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Blessed, blessed is the Guru, who worships and adores the Naam; He saves Himself, and emancipates those who see Him.
(ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਾਮ ਕਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਵਿਹੁ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
Truest of the True is the True Guru, the Primal Being, who has conquered sexual desire, anger and corruption.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ (ਅਜੇਹਾ ਇਹ) ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵੇਖਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਰ ਧੀਰਜ ਆ ਗਈ
When I see the Perfect True Guru, then deep within, my mind is comforted and consoled.
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਦਿਆਂ ਖੋਜਦਿਆਂ ਮੈਂ (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲੱਭ ਹੀ ਲਿਆ (ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਲ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਲੱਭ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਂ ਸਕਦਾ)
Searching and examining my mind and body, I have found that God, whom I longed for.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਕੀਲ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।੧।
I have found the Guru, the Divine Intermediary, who has united me with the Lord God. ||1||
(ਚੇਲੇ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ) ਸਗੋਂ ਚੇਲਾ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਉਦਰ-ਪੂਰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
The disciple feeds on the Guru;
ਰੋਟੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਚੇਲਾ ਆ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।
out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਸਾਡਾ ਇਹ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋਇਆ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ), ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਪੈ ਗਈ
When I was married within the Gurdwara, the Guru's Gate, I met my Husband Lord, and I came to know Him.
ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੌ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਗਿਆ ।੨।
The Word of His Shabad is pervading the three worlds; when my ego was quieted, my mind became happy. ||2||
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ) ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Guru meets with those, who take virtue as their treasure;
ਗੁਰੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
they listen to the True Word of the Guru's Bani, the Shabad.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ; ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
I contemplate the Guru, the Guru; I meditate on the Guru, the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੰਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਲੋੜ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।ਰਹਾਉ।
I offer my heart-felt prayer to the Guru, and it is answered. ||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀ ਰੱਖ
Meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, forever and ever, my mind is filled with the Love of the Lord, Har, Har.
(ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ) ਮੈਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਧਨ ਹੈ ।੪।੨।੧੦੪।
The Guru is my soul, my breath of life, and wealth; O Nanak, He is with me forever. ||4||2||104||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ
I am a sacrifice to my Guru; forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him.
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਰਨੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I am a sacrifice to the Guru; meeting Him, I am absorbed into the True Lord. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੇਵਕ (-ਸੁਭਾਉ) ਬਣ ਕੇ (ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ) ਕਰੜੀ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਕਰੇ, ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖੇ (ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਬਣਾਏ),
Ghagha: The servant who performs service, remains attached to the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਜੇ (ਵਾਪਰਦੇ) ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਜਾਣੇ, (ਬੱਸ!) ਇਹੀ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਵਿਚ) ਸਿਮਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।
One who recognizes bad and good as one and the same - in this way he is absorbed into the Lord and Master. ||8||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੀਵ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਕਰੇ? ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਅਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
Chhachha: Ignorance exists within everyone; doubt is Your doing, O Lord.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਬਚਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਤੇ ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਭੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ) ।੧੦।
Having created doubt, You Yourself cause them to wander in delusion; those whom You bless with Your Mercy meet with the Guru. ||10||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ) ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।
I have churned the ocean of the body, and I have seen the incomparable thing come into view.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਦੋਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।੪।੧।੮।
The Guru is God, and God is the Guru, O Nanak; there is no difference between the two, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||1||8||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ
The Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, and the Lord Guru, are known by the Gurmukh.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਕਦੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਢਹਿੰਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One moment, this mind is in the heavens, and the next, it is in the nether regions; the Guru brings the wandering mind back to one-pointedness.
(ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖ (ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ (ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਸਿੱਖ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ (ਦੀ ਲੜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Guru's Sikh, and the Sikh's Guru, are one and the same; both spread the Guru's Teachings.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮੰਤਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਵਸਾਣ ਲਈ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।੨।੯।
The Mantra of the Lord's Name is enshrined within the heart, O Nanak, and we merge with the Lord so easily. ||8||2||9||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਲ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ) ।
There is no Nectar, other than the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar. One who drinks it in, knows the way.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Hail, hail to the Perfect Guru; through Him, God is found. Joining the Sangat, the Naam is understood.
ਹੇ ਥਾਂ ਥਾਂ ਭਟਕ ਰਹੇ ਮਨ! ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨ! ਕਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ।
O my dear beloved stranger mind, please come home!
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰਿ-ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਇਗੀ ਕਿ ਸਭ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
Meet with the Lord-Guru, O my dear beloved, and He will dwell in the home of your self.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦਾ ਦਰਦ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨੀਂਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ।
Separation from my Lord keeps my body awake, O my dear beloved; I cannot sleep at all.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਲਗਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਸੱਜਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ) ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੩।
Nanak has found the Lord, the True Friend, O my dear beloved, by loving the Guru. ||3||
ਜੇ (ਇਕ) ਸੌ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ,
If a hundred moons were to rise, and a thousand suns appeared,
ਜੇ ਇਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ (ਭਾਵ, ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੇ ਇਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਆਦਿਕ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਪੈਣ), ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਫੇਰ ਭੀ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
even with such light, there would still be pitch darkness without the Guru. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਚਤਰ (ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹਨ,
O Nanak, those who do not think of the Guru, and who think of themselves as clever,
ਉਹ ਇਉਂ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਸੰੁਞੀ ਪੈਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸੜੇ ਤਿਲ ਨਿਖਸਮੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ।
shall be left abandoned in the field, like the scattered sesame.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਾਰਸ ਬਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without becoming the philosopher's stone, he does not inspire others to worship the Lord; without instructing his own mind, how can he instruct others?
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੩।
The ignorant, blind man calls himself the guru, but to whom can he show the way? ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ! ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ।
When it pleases the Lord God, he causes us to meet the Gurmukhs; the Hymns of the Guru, the True Guru, are very sweet to their minds.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Very fortunate are the beloved Sikhs of the Guru; through the Lord, they attain the supreme state of Nirvaanaa. ||2||
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਅਸਲ) ਸਿੱਖ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਅਸਲ) ਵੈਦ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਹੋਰ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਰੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He alone is said to be a Guru, he alone is said to be a Sikh, and he alone is said to be a physician, who knows the patient's illness.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ-ਧੰਧਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ । (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਸਦਕਾ) ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ (ਫਸਦਾ), ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ (ਹੰੁਦਾ ਭੀ) ਜੋਗੀ ਹੈ ।੫।
He is not affected by actions, responsibilities and entanglements; in the entanglements of his household, he maintains the detachment of Yoga. ||5||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ ।
Fruitful are the lives of those Gurmukhs who recognize the Lord and enshrine Him in their hearts.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਵਿਲਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧੧।
Without the Guru, they wander around crying out in misery; in the love of duality, they are ruined. ||11||
(ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜੀਵ-ਵਪਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He is seated on the Lord's throne, and he dwells continually in the home of his own being.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ (ਮਿੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧੬।
He alone surrenders to the Lord's Will, who meets the Guru. ||16||
ਮਨ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਹਾਥੀ ਹੈ; (ਜੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਇਸ ਦਾ) ਮਹਾਵਤ (ਬਣੇ, ਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਕੁੰਡਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਓਧਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਧਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The mind is the elephant, the Guru is the elephant-driver, and knowledge is the whip. Wherever the Guru drives the mind, it goes.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੁੰਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹਾਥੀ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, without the whip, the elephant wanders into the wilderness, again and again. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸੱਜਣ-ਹਰੀ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Perfect Guru has united me, O my soul, with the Lord, my best friend, the Lord God.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਗੁਰੂ ਸਲਾਹੁਣ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਹੁਣ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਦੱਸ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Blessed, blessed is the Guru, who has shown me the Lord, O my soul; servant Nanak blossoms forth in the Name of the Lord. ||4||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ (ਭਰਮ ਦਾ ਛਉੜ ਕੱਟਣ ਲਈ) ਇਹ ਕਾਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਲਾਜ) ਕਰੋ
The True Guru has commanded us to do this:
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ) ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰੋ
through the Guru's Gate, meditate on the Lord Master.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ!) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਖਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਆਸ ਹੈ ।
My mind longs to meet my Beloved Lord.
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਮਿਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ, ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The Perfect Guru leads me to meet my Beloved; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to my Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਉਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਹੈ (ਜੀਵ-ਰਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫਰ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਹੈ) ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
The body is the Lord's horse; the Lord imbues it with the fresh and new color.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੂਝ ਮੰਗਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
From the Guru, I ask for the Lord's spiritual wisdom.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਆਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖੀ
Those Gursikhs are good Saints, who care for nothing other than the Lord.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ, ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਰੂਪ) ਅਮਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਫਲ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ) ।੬।
Blessed, blessed is their Guru, whose mouth tastes the Ambrosial Fruit of the Lord's Name. ||6||
ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਅਸਲ) ਰਤਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ ।
The Jewel is the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the Knower alone knows it.
ਪਰ, ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਜਤਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The fools take pride in themselves, and are ruined in birth and death.
ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ, ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The Generous Guru has given me the Lord's Name; blessed, blessed are the Guru's mother and father.
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਪਈ ਹੈ ।੧੬।
I ever bow in humble reverence to my True Guru; meeting Him, I have come to know the Lord's Name. ||16||
ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ, ਜੋ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਵਰਤਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ।
I recite continually the Guru's Shabads, which have been effective throughout the ages.
(ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਡਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਤੇ ਹੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਜਤਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ)
This mind ever abides in peace, dealing in peace and poise.
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਮਾਨੋ,) ਲੂਲ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਹਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਵਖਿਆਨ-ਕਰਤਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
The cripple crosses over the mountain, the fool becomes a wise man,
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨਾ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
and the blind man sees the three worlds, by meeting with the True Guru and being purified. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ,
Chant Guru, Guru, Guru, O my mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ ।
I have no other than the Guru.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਹੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖੋ! ਸਰਧਾ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੋ ।
Chant Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, and know Him as true.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ (ਘਟ ਘਟ ਦੀ) ਜਾਣਨਹਾਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਓ, ਅਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰੋ ।
Know that the Lord is the Treasure of Excellence. Enshrine Him in your mind, and meditate on Him. Enshrine the Word of the Guru's Teachings within your heart.
