ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ! (ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ) ਸੁਣ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ
Listen, O my mind: hurry to the Protection of the Guru's Sanctuary.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬਚੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਜ਼ਹਰ-(ਭਰਿਆ) ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਹੀ) ਤਰ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
By Guru's Grace you shall be saved. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean of poison. ||1||Pause||
(ਜਿੱਥੇ) ਹਉਮੈ (ਹੈ ਉੱਥੇ) ਨਿਰੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੈ, ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ
In egotism, all must account for their actions. In this accounting, there is no peace.
(ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਜ਼ਹ੧ਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ, ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
Acting in evil and corruption, people are immersed in corruption.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੜਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਮਾਣ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
O God, none return from You empty-handed; at Your Door, the Gurmukhs are praised and acclaimed.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਕੱਢ ਲੈ ।੪।੧।੬੫।
In the terrifying world-ocean of poison, people are drowning-please lift them up and save them! This is servant Nanak's humble prayer. ||4||1||65||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ
O Siblings of Destiny, God is my Friend and Companion.
ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਦਾ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਪੱੁਤਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਥੀ (ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Emotional attachment to children and spouse is poison; in the end, no one will go along with you as your helper. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ
The Guru has lovingly implanted the Word of His Shabad within me. Without His Grace, it cannot be attained.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੌ ਵਾਰੀ ਭੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਿੰਜੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਹੀ ਛੇਤੀ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।
Even if the poisonous plant is watered with ambrosial nectar a hundred times, it will still bear poisonous fruit. ||4||
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ
Those humble beings who are in love with the True Guru are pure and true.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੫।
They act in harmony with the Will of the True Guru; they shed the poison of ego and corruption. ||5||
ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ! ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲੋਭੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਲੋਭ ਦੀਆਂ) ਲਹਿਰ ਉੱਠਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
He is entangled in emotional attachment to his wife and sons, O my merchant friend, and deep within him, the waves of greed are rising up.
ਮਨੱੁਖ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅੱਖ ਝਮਕਣ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਸਮਾ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ
He has forgotten the Creator, his Lord and Master, and he does not meditate on Him, even for an instant.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਆਖ—(ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਹੀ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।
Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਨ ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਬਾਹੁਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ), ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ-ਪਸਾਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਬਾਹੁਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ
O dear beloved mind, my friend, without the Lord, all outward show is false.
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨ ! ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਇਕ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ (ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ
O dear beloved mind, my friend, the world is an ocean of poison.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They do not chant the Naam, and they die, eating poison.
(ਗੰਦ ਦੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਵਾਂਗ) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਗੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਜ਼ਾਇਆ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੬।
Night and day, they continually sit in manure. Without selfless service, their lives are wasted away. ||6||
ਸਗੋਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹੇ ।
Consumed by desire, they have no understanding at all.
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਇੱਕਠੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ੍ਰਹ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ) ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ।੭।
They purchase poison, and they are thirsty with their fascination for poison. Telling lies, they eat poison. ||7||
(ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਦਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
In love with duality, they waste away their lives in vain.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਡੋਬੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜੋ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੬।
They drown themselves, and drown their entire family; speaking lies, they eat poison. ||6||
(ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਡਾਵਾਂ ਡੋਲ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Attached to duality, it wanders in the ten directions.
(ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਕੀੜਾ (ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਦਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।
It is a poisonous worm, drenched with poison, and in poison it rots away. ||4||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭਗਤ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਬੰਦਗੀ-ਰੂਪ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
He blends His devotees with Himself; they practice Truth, and only Truth.
ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੁੰਝਾਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ) ਵਿਹੁ ਖਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।
The Lord Himself leads the people of the world astray; they tell lies, and by telling lies, they eat poison.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਔੜ ਲੱਗਣ ਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਕੰਢੇ ਹਰਿਆਵਲੇ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਦ-ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Those who are committed to the Naam, see the world as merely a temporary pasture.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਵਿਹੁਲਾ ਮਟਕਾ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ) ।
Sexual desire and anger are broken, like a jar of poison.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
In the love of duality, no one can serve the Lord.
ਹਉਮੈ ਇਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
In egotism and Maya, they are eating toxic poison.
ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ) ਹੈ
The shop-keepers collect poison, sitting in their shops, carrying on their business.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਨਿਰਾ) ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠ ਦਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਧੀਕ ਰੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਉਂ) ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Their love is false, their displays are false, and they are engrossed in falsehood.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਬੜਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕਾਲਖ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The hearts of the self-willed manmukhs are hard and cruel; their inner beings are dark.
ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਧ ਪਿਲਾਈ ਜਾਈਏ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਫੋਲਿਆਂ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੀ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਹੰੁਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੩।
Even if the poisonous snake is fed large amounts of milk, it will still yield only poison. ||3||
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਮੇਰੇ ਗਲੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ,
By His Grace, the bonds of Maya are cut away.
(ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਭੇਜੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਵਰਗੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੁਣ) ਕੌੜੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਭਾਸ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ,
By Guru's Grace, the bitter poison has become Ambrosial Nectar.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਵਰਤਣ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ (ਦਾ) ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੈੜਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
That which is for his own good, he thinks is evil.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਆਖੇ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
If someone tells him the truth, he looks upon that as poison.
(ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਹੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੱੁਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Their inner beings are filled with poison, and yet with their mouths, they preach words of Ambrosial Nectar.
(ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਜਮ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੨।
Bound and gagged in the City of Death, they are punished and beaten. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਰੋਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਘਿਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੱੁਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Gripped by disease, they invoke the Name.
ਪਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਨਾਮ-ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ, (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ-ਮੁਕਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੨।
But those who are intoxicated with vice shall find no home, no place of rest. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੋਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ,
In thought, word and deed, seek the Support of the Lord of the Universe;
ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਪਰੇ ਹਟ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਹ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਪਰੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੩।
thus you shall be saved from the poisonous world-ocean. ||3||
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The poison of Maya is of no use at all. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ) ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਠਗ-ਬੂਟੀ ਖਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ,
Those who have eaten this poison of deception
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਬਹੁਤ ਸੰਘਣੀ ਖਿਲਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
The poison of corruption is spread out far and wide.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Only the virtuous are saved, chanting and meditating on the Lord. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਦ ਤਕ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਿ (ਇਹ ਘਰ) ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਧਨ) ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ) ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤਕ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੇ ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ (ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ) ।
As long as I claimed, "Mine, mine!", I was surrounded by wickedness and corruption.
(ਹੁਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੩।
But when I dedicated my mind, body and intellect to my Lord and Master, then I began to sleep in peace. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਰਗ ਅਤੇ ਨਰਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Heaven and hell, ambrosial nectar and poison, gold and copper - these are all alike to them.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਭੀ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ (ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰੇ, ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ—ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਹਨ), ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਮੋਹ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੨।
Praise and slander are all the same to them, as are greed and attachment. ||2||
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮਜੀਠ ਵਰਗੇ ਪੱਕੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਾਲਾ) ਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਸੁੰਭੇ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਰਗਾ ਕੱਚਾ, ਸੂਹਾ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।
Instead of the pale color of Maya, I am imbued with the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love.
(ਮੇਰਾ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਉਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਨੋਂ) ਰੋਕ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੨।
By the Lord's Glance of Grace, the poison has been eliminated. ||2||
(ਆਤਮਕ) ਆਨੰਦ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
I have gathered in the Lord's sublime essence, and cast out the poison.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।੩।
Abiding in His Love, the fear of death has run away. ||3||
ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਮਾਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰੇਹ (ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ) ।
by sexual desire, anger, corruption, hunger and thirst.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਐਸੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਆਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ (ਤੇ, ਉਹੀ ਹਨ ਅਸਲ ਜੋਗੀ) ।੮।੭।
O Nanak, those detached recluses who meet the Lord are so very rare. ||8||7||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਇਹ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
The blind, self-willed manmukhs constantly eat poison.
(ਅਜੇਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਗੋਂ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ-ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Abandoning the Source of all, they have become attached to the love of duality.
(ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Infected with poison, they are immersed in poison. ||3||
(ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਫੂੰ-ਫਾਂ ਕਸੁੰਭੇ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ (ਵਾਂਗ ਖਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ) ।
Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ,
Those Gurmukhs who chant the treasure of the Naam,
ਉਹ (ਫਿਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ (ਦੌੜ-ਭਜ ਕਰਦੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਖਪਦੇ ।
are not destroyed by the poison of Maya.
ਸੋਨਾ ਤੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ (ਭੀ ਉਸ ਮਨੱੁਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੋਨਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਸਦਾ),
As is gold, so is dust to him.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤੇ ਕਉੜੀ ਵਿਹੁ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਜੈਸੀ ਹੈ ।
As is ambrosial nectar, so is bitter poison to him.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਏਗੀ,
Chanting His Glories, your filth shall be washed off.
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੂਪੀ ਵਿਹੁ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਭੀ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਏਗਾ ।
The all-consuming poison of ego will be gone.
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੱੁਲ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ,
Why forget Him, who lifts us up out of corruption?
ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ?
Those separated from Him for countless lifetimes, are re-united with Him once again.
ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ (ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ) ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਲੱਗਿਆਂ ਸਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਘਾਟਾ ਹੈ ।
Egotism and Maya are total poison; in these, people continually suffer loss in this world.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਧਨ ਦਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੱਟਿਆ (ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ),
The Gurmukh earns the profit of the wealth of the Lord's Name, contemplating the Word of the Shabad.
ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ-ਮੈਲ (ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The poisonous filth of egotism is removed, when one enshrines the Ambrosial Name of the Lord within the heart.
(ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੈ), ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਅਸਲ ਵਣਜ ਵਿਚ ਘਾਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ),
All the Gurmukh's affairs are brought to perfect completion; the Lord has showered him with His Mercy.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ, ਓਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਬੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ (ਰੂਪ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ) ਦਾ ਠੱਗਿਆ (ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,)
One who does not obey the Hukam, the Command of the Perfect Guru - that self-willed manmukh is plundered by his ignorance and poisoned by Maya.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ (ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਉਹ) ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਖਸਮ ਨੇ (ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਝਗੜੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
Within him is falsehood, and he sees everyone else as false; the Lord has tied these useless conflicts around his neck.
ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਕੂੜ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰੀਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕੱਚੀ-ਪਿੱਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਕੂੜ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਝੜ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ, ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਜ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
Jealously emulating the True Guru, some others may speak of good and bad, but the false are destroyed by their falsehood.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੁੱਝ ਹੋਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਰ, ਉਹ ਵਿਹੁ-ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਝੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਖਪ ਖਪ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੯।
Deep within them is one thing, and in their mouths is another; they suck in the poison of Maya, and then they painfully waste away. ||9||
ਸਾਕਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਓਥੇ (ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਭੇਡਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ (ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ) ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕੂੜ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਦੇ ਹਨ
There is no food for them there; the false go into the filth like sheep.
ਜੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ) ਚੰਗਾ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖਵਾਣ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਭੀ ਕਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ (ਨਿੰਦਾ-ਰੂਪ) ਵਿਹੁ ਹੀ ਉਗਲ ਕੇ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ ।
If you try to feed the faithless cynic, he will spit out poison from his mouth.
(ਮਾਇਆ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਕੁੱੜਤਣ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਬੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।
The bitter poison of corruption is everywhere; it clings to the substance of the world.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, the humble being has realized that the Name of the Lord alone is sweet. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਰੂਪ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He crosses over the terrifying, poisonous world-ocean.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਗੁੰਦੋ, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
So weave the garland of the Lord's Glorious Praises into your mind, and all your filth shall be washed away.
(‘ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ’ ਗਾਵਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਠੰਢ ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵਰ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ,
On Monday, the Ambrosial Nectar trickles down from the moon.
(ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ) ਚੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਤੁਰਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
Tasting it, all poisons are removed in an instant.
ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ; ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਐਸਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਹਿਜ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਖੱਟੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋਵੇ ।
I am the merchant of the Lord; I deal in spiritual wisdom.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਲੱਦਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
I have loaded the Wealth of the Lord's Name; the world has loaded poison. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Without the Naam, the fools depart naked.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪਤੰਗ (ਬਲਦੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਸੜ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
They burn away to death, chasing the poison of Maya, like the moth chasing the flame. ||3||
ਹੇ ਸੰੁਦਰੀ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਤੇਰਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ (ਇਹ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ ।
Washing the Guru's feet, and serving Him, the soul is sanctified, and the thirst for sin is quenched.
(ਹੇ ਸੰੁਦਰੀ!) ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏਂ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਭਾ-ਆਦਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੇਂਗੀ ।੨।
If you become the slave of the slave of the Lord's slaves, then you shall obtain honor in the Court of the Lord. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਡੈਣ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਤੋਂ) ਆਪ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Lord God has saved me, His slave.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਗਿੱਝਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਤਾਪ (ਇਉਂ) ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
My mind has surrendered to my Beloved; my fever has taken poison and died. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
O Father, I have seen that the world is poison.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਤੋਂ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Save me, O Lord of the Universe! Your Name is my only Support. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਦਰਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਜਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨਾਹ ਪੋਹ ਸਕੇ
by which you may attain the state of Nirvaanaa.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੇਰੇ ਚੁਫੇਰੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ ਚਸ਼ਮੇ (ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਪਰ ਤੇਰੇ) ਅੰਦਰ (ਨਾਮ-) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਦਾ ਚਸ਼ਮਾ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ) ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
All around this garden are pools of poison, but within it is the Ambrosial Nectar, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||Pause||
