ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
In attachment to Maya, they have forgotten the Father, the Cherisher of the World.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਗ਼ਾਫਿਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ) ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜਕੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
Without the Guru, all are unconscious; they are held in bondage by the Messenger of Death.
ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਚੋਗਾ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜਾਲ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੇ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਖੀ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
Maya has spread out her net, and in it, she has placed the bait.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੇ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਖੀ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਮਾਂ ! (ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
The bird of desire is caught, and cannot find any escape, O my mother.
(ਜੇ ਪੁੱਛੋ ਕਿ) ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ ? (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ ? ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ?
What is called Maya? What does Maya do?
(ਤਾਂ ਉੱਤਰ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ) ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਦੁੱਖ (ਦੀ ਨਿਵਿਰਤੀ) ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ (ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ) ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ‘ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ’ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
These beings are bound by pleasure and pain; they do their deeds in egotism.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਲਈ ਤਾਂਘਦਾ ਹੈ
Everyone longs for Your Name,
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ।੩।
but without the Guru, no one finds You. All are enticed and trapped by Maya. ||3||
ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਸੋਨੇ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.
ਘਰ, ਪੱਕੇ ਮਹਲ ਘੋੜੇ (ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ (ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The mind has become attached to the pleasures of houses, palaces, horses and other enjoyments.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ) ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਤੀਜ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ)
One who is attached to Maya is totally blind and deaf.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ, (ਪਰ) (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਖਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਰ-ਦਰਦੀ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਰੌਲਾ ਬਹੁਤ (ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
He does not listen to the Word of the Shabad; he makes a great uproar and tumult.
ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ) ਕੂੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਜ਼ਬਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ) ਕੂੜ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਕੂੜ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
They practice falsehood and they speak falsehood; attached to falsehood, they become false.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (-ਰੂਪ ਕੂੜ) ਨਿਰੋਲ ਦੁੱਖ (ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ) ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ) ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ (ਦਾ ਰੋਣਾ ਹੀ) ਰੋਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The love of Maya is total pain; in pain they perish, and in pain they cry out.
ਹੇ ਝੱਲੇ ਮਨਾਂ! ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੋਤਾ ਨਲਨੀ (ਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ) ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Like the parrot caught in the trap, O crazy mind, you trapped by the affairs of Maya.
ਹੇ ਕਮਲੇ ਮਨ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਸੁੰਭੇ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ (ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ (ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਲਈ ਹੀ) ਖਿਲਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।੩।
Like the weak dye of the safflower, O crazy mind, so is the expanse of this world of form and substance. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਸੱਪਣੀ ਬਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਚੰਬੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹ
Maya is a serpent, clinging to the world.
ਜੋ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Whoever serves her, she ultimately devours.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ ।
I constantly, lovingly cherish my Beloved within my heart; through the True Guru, I see my Beloved.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਮਾਨੋ ਕੱਚੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਾਲਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਇਹ ਚੋਲਾ ਪਹਿਨੀ ਰੱਖੀਏ, (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਪੈਂਡੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਪੈਰ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The cloak of Maya's love is false; wearing it, one slips and loses his footing.
ਤੇ, ਜਦੋਂ ਸਰੋਵਰ (ਨਕਾ ਨਕ) ਭਰ ਕੇ (ਬਾਹਰ) ਉਛਲਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਤਰਨਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ; ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਤ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਸਕੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
When the ocean is churning and over-flowing, then it is very difficult to cross over it. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ! ਚੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਹੈ ।
Do not touch the safflower with your hands; its color will fade away, my dear. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਖਸਮ! (ਤੇਰੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ (ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ।
This Maya has made me forget Your feet, O Lord of the World, Master of the Universe.
ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕੀਹ ਕਰਨ? (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Not even a bit of love wells up in Your humble servant; what can Your poor servant do? ||1||Pause||
ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ।
According to His Will, the child is born, and the family is very pleased.
ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੀ ਤਾਰ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਆ ਚੰਬੜਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ (ਉਸ ਉਤੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Love for the Lord wears off, and the child becomes attached to desires; the script of Maya runs its course.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਉਸ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
Know the One who created love and attachment to Maya, the Enticer.
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਲਈ ਸਿਰਫ਼ (ਨਾਮ-) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੀ ‘ਮਾਇਆ’ ਹੈ ।੪੮।
One who realizes the all-knowing Primal Lord, looks alike upon poison and nectar. ||48||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ (ਛਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਫਿੱਕੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
The pleasures of Maya fade away in an instant, like the shade of a passing cloud.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਉਹ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਗਏ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ) ।੩।
They alone are dyed in the deep crimson of the Lord's Love, who meet the Guru, and sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਇਤਨੀ ਬਲ ਵਾਲੀ,
Such are the enticements of Maya, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਮੋਹਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਹਨ, ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਡੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
As many living beings are there are, have been deceived. ||1||Pause||
