ਜੇ) ਜਤ-ਰੂਪ ਦੁਕਾਨ (ਹੋਵੇ), ਧੀਰਜ ਸੁਨਿਆਰਾ ਬਣੇ,
Let self-control be the furnace, and patience the goldsmith.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੱਤ ਅਹਿਰਣ ਹੋਵੇ, (ਉਸ ਮਤ-ਅਹਿਰਣ ਉੱਤੇ) ਗਿਆਨ ਹਥੌੜਾ (ਵੱਜੇ)।
Let understanding be the anvil, and spiritual wisdom the tools.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਨੰੂ ਚੰਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ । (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
It is not pleasing to the Lord's slaves; without the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, how can they find peace, even for a moment?
ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਲਿੱਸਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਆ ਗਈ ਜਾਪਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the body and mind are empty; like fish out of water, they die.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਧੀਰਜ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਤਨ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਪਸ਼ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਈ ਹੈ)
My mind and body have been cooled and soothed; I have been blessed with patience and composure.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਅਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ । ਹੁਣ (ਇਹ ਦਾਸ) ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਹੀ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੪।੫।੧੨।
The Immortal Lord God has come to dwell within my heart. Nanak sings the songs of joy to the Lord. ||4||5||12||
(ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
In their Mercy, the Saints have met me, and from them, I have obtained satisfaction.
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਬਿਖਾਦੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਡਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ ।੩।
The Saints have given me the Mantra of the Fearless Lord, and now I practice the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ) ਧੀਰਜ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਧੀਰਜ ਬੜਾ ਉੱਚਾ) ਧਰਮ ਹੈ ।
Following the Guru's Teachings, one obtains Dharmic faith, composure and the Lord's Name.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੨।੯।
O Nanak, singing the Glories of God, His Name is received. ||12||9||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਤਾ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Patience, glory and honor come to those
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ) ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
who listen to the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
(ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾ ਕਹੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਬੁਰਾ, ਪਰ) ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ-ਤਾਰ ਹੌਸਲਾ (ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ,
The God-conscious being has a steady patience,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਤਾਂ ਖੋਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇ ਲੇਪਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ) ।
like the earth, which is dug up by one, and anointed with sandal paste by another.
ਜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਹਰੀ-ਭਜਨ ਦੀ ਮੰੁਦਰੀ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਹੱਥ ਦੀ ਉਂਗਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਲਏ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤ ਦਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਰੇਸ਼ਮੀ ਕਪੜਾ ਬਣਾਏ,
She should make the Lord, the Slayer of demons, her ring, and take the Transcendent Lord as her silken clothes.
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ) ਗੰਭੀਰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਟੀਆਂ ਸਜਾਣ ਹਿਤ ਵਰਤੇ, ਲੱਛਮੀ-ਪਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਰਮਾ ਪਾਏ ।੩।
The soul-bride should weave patience into the braids of her hair, and apply the lotion of the Lord, the Great Lover. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਮ! (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ । ਤੇਰੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਉੱਦਮ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Please, come to me, O Beloved Lord; without You, no one can comfort me. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਮ! ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤੇ, ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਇਆ, ਤੇ) ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ।੧।
One may read the Simritees and the Shaastras, and perform all sorts of religious rituals; and yet, without the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, God, there is no peace at all. ||1||
ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ
My mind has become patient,
since I fell at God's Door, O my mind. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਧੀਰਜ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Dharmic faith, patience, peace and poise are obtained by vibrating upon the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਮਮਤਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੋਹ ਮਮਤਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਭ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Showering His Blessings, He saves those who renounce all attachments and egotism.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਧੀਰਜ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਧਰਮ ਕਮਾਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Through the Guru's Teachings, I have obtained courage, faith and the Lord. He keeps my mind focused continually on the Lord, and the Name of the Lord.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਚਨ ਹਨ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The Words of the True Guru's Teachings are Ambrosial Nectar; this Amrit trickles into the mouth of the one who chants them. ||2||
ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਵੇਸ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆ ਜਾਵਾਂ ।
I dress myself in all sorts of robes for my Husband, so that my True Lord God will be pleased.
ਪਰ ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਲ (ਮੇਰੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵੇਸਾਂ ਵਲ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੱਕਦਾ, (ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਵੇਸਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ?
But my Beloved Husband Lord does not even cast a glance in my direction; how can I be consoled?
When I see Him, I sing His Praises.
Then I, his humble servant, become patient. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ (ਨਿੱਤ) ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
Speak, read and hear of the One Lord.
ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਟੇਕ ਫੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਨੂੰ (ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
The Support of the earth shall bless you with courage, righteousness and protection.
ਉਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ) ਸੂਰਮਾ ਹੈ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਹੈ, ਪੂਰੀ ਅਕਲ ਅਤੇ ਧੀਰਜ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
He alone is brave, patient and perfectly wise;
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਲਗਨ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
he is intuitively in Samaadhi, profound and unfathomable.
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਭੜਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨ ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਧਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The fire of the five passions burns within him; how can he be calm?
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮੋਹ-ਚੋਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The thief is within him; how can he taste the taste?
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਧੀਕੀ ਸਹਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਤੇ ਜਿਗਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ, ਇਹ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਲਵੇਰੀ ਗਾਂ, ਤਾਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ-ਵੱਛਾ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦਾ) ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀ ਸਕੇ ।
Let forgiveness and patience be my milk-cows, and let the calf of my mind intuitively drink in this milk.
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਦਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ ।੪।੭।
I beg for the clothes of modesty and the Lord's Praise; Nanak chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||7||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ) ਸੱਤਿ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਸੀਆ), ਸੀਲਵੰਤ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਿਚ ਤਕੜਾ ਹੈ, ਵੱਡੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਡੂੰਘੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
He is the Warrior Hero of Truth, humility is His Power. His Loving Nature inspires the Congregation with deep and profound understanding; He is absorbed in the Lord, free of hate and vengeance.
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦਾ) ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਧੀਰਜ ਰੂਪ ਝੰਡਾ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਦੇ ਪੁਲ ਤੇ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
