(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਤੋਖ (ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ) ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦਇਆ-ਪਿਆਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਲੂਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Let your mind be content, and be kind to all beings.
ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ (ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਵਰਤ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਸਲੀ ਵਰਤ) ।
In this way, your fast will be successful.
(ਹੋਰ ਤੱਕੋ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਅੰਨ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਹੋਰ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
One who does not eat the corn, misses out on the taste.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਤਲਖ਼ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
One obtains great pain, in the love of duality.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਇਕਾਦਸ਼ੀ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਰਤ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ
With the Lord, servant Naam Dayv has come to have faith.
ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ (ਭੀ ਕਿਉਂ) ਜਾਵਾਂ? ।੧।
I have stopped fasting on the eleventh day of each month; why should I bother to go on pilgrimages to sacred shrines? ||1||
ਜੋ ਲੋਕ ਅੰਨ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਇਹ) ਪਖੰਡ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
One who discards this grain, is practicing hypocrisy.
ਉਹ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੁਚੱਜੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਹਨ ਜੋ) ਨਾਹ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਾਂ ਹਨ ਨਾਹ ਰੰਡੀਆਂ ।
She is neither a happy soul-bride, nor a widow.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਅੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਕੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਲਾਭ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੱਟਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
He does not eat food; he tortures his body.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
Without the Guru's wisdom, he is not satisfied.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੱਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ), ਸੰਤੋਖ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ;
Those who have truth as their fast, contentment as their sacred shrine of pilgrimage, spiritual wisdom and meditation as their cleansing bath,
ਦਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਟ-ਦੇਵ ਹੈ, (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਧੀਕੀ) ਸਹਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਆਦਤਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਹੈ;
kindness as their deity, and forgiveness as their chanting beads - they are the most excellent people.
ਪੰਜ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੇ—ਜੇ ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁਆਦਸੀ ਦਾ ਵਰਤ ਬਣੇ, ਤਾਂ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨ ਪਤੀਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
On the twelfth day, the five thieves are subdued, and then, O Nanak, the mind is pleased and appeased.
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਜੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਰਤ ਨਿਬਾਹ ਸਕੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ।੨।
Observe such a fast as this, O Pandit, O religious scholar; of what use are all the other teachings? ||2||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ!ਰਾਮ-ਨਾਮ ਛੱਡਣ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਮੂਰਖ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੀਤਲਾ ਦੀ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Kabeer, the woman who gives up meditation on the Lord, and observes the ritual fast of Ahoi,
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖੋਤੀ ਦੀ ਜੂਨੇ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਹੋਰ ਖੋਤੇ ਖੋਤੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਛੱਟਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਚਾਰ ਮਣ ਭਾਰ ਢੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧੦੮।
shall be reincarnated as a donkey, to carry heavy burdens. ||108||
