ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੇ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਖੀ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਮਾਂ ! (ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
The bird of desire is caught, and cannot find any escape, O my mother.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜਿਸ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
One who does not know the Lord who created him, comes and goes in reincarnation over and over again. ||3||
(ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ (ਜੋ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ,
The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation.
ਇਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਬੁੱਝ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧੯।
Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19||
ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੀ (ਮਾਲਕੀ ਦੀ) ਖ਼ਾਤਰ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਸਦਾ ਲੜਦਾ-ਝਗੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹ
The landlord fights over his land each day.
(ਇਹ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਇਥੇ ਹੀ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਆਖ਼ਰ ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਟਦੀ ।੨।
He shall have to leave it in the end, and yet his desire is still not satisfied. ||2||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The thirst of only a few is quenched. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਇਹ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
Holy Saadhus: this mind cannot be restrained.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹਾਵ-ਭਾਵ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Fickle desires dwell with it, and so it cannot remain steady. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਸੁੱਝ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
By Guru's Grace, one understands himself;
ਇਹ ਜਾਣ ਲਵੋ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
know that then, his thirst is quenched.
ਜਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਬੁੱਢਾ—ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦੀ,
Whether he is young or old, the self-willed manmukh cannot escape hunger and thirst.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਹੰੁਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The Gurmukhs are imbued with the Word of the Shabad; they are at peace, having lost their self-conceit.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਹਨ, ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਜ਼ਿਮੀਦਾਰ ਹਨ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ
The desires of the greatest of the great kings and landlords cannot be satisfied.
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕੌਤਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਬੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ । (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ।੧।
They remain engrossed in Maya, intoxicated with the pleasures of their wealth; their eyes see nothing else at all. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਬੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Desire is quenched, through the Lord's Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆਂ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਬੜਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੁੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Great peace and contentment come through the Guru's Word, and one's meditation is perfectly focused upon God. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਦਿੱਸਣ, ਉਂਞ ਮਨੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਣ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਇਉਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਸਮਝੋ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੁਆਰੀਆ ਜੂਏ ਵਿਚ ਧਨ ਹਾਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Those who are outwardly pure and yet polluted within, lose their lives in the gamble.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਭਾਰਾ ਰੋਗ ਖਾਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ) ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They contract this terrible disease of desire, and in their minds, they forget about dying.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਕਹਿ ਲਵੋ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਸਾੜਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Spiritual ignorance and desire burn this human body.
ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He alone puts out this fire, who practices and lives the Guru's Shabad.
