ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੈਥੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਦੂਰ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਤੌਖ਼ਲਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤੌਖ਼ਲੇ ਵਿਚ) ਖਿੱਝ ਖਿੱਝ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਢਹਿੰਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
I am terrified by the Fear of You, God. Bothered and bewildered, my body is wasting away.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਾਨ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹਨ ਸਭ (ਇਥੇ ਹੀ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
Those who are known as sultans and emperors shall be reduced to dust in the end.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ-ਰੂਪ) ਪੈਂਡਾ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ
O All-knowing Lord, You are the True Way. The Shabad is the Navigator to ferry us across.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ-ਭਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
One who does not fear God shall live in fear; without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness. ||3||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਬਦ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
I searched and searched, and found God. In the Fear of God, I have been united in His Union.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਹੀ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
Through self-realization, people dwell within the home of their inner being; egotism and desire depart.
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਰੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਤਾਂ ਤੇ) ਹੋਰ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਭਰਮ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ
Without that Lord, there is no other at all. Remove your fear, doubt and dread.
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ !) ਉਸੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Praise that Lord who protects you, inside your home, and outside as well.
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ), ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ
Those who meditate on the True Guru are not afraid of the Messenger of Death.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਭੀ ਉਹੀ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪ ਤੁੱਠਦਾ ਹੈ
Those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, fall at the Feet of the True Guru.
(ਪਰ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਹੋਰ) ਡਰ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਗਲਦੇ ਹਨ ।
But those who do not have the Fear of God, are overtaken by fear. They are destroyed by their own pride.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਭੁੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਗਤ ਬੇ-ਤਾਲ (ਬੇ ਥਵ੍ਹਾ) ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨੪।
Having forgotten the Name, the world is roaming around like a wild demon. ||24||
(ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਤਾਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਰਿਹਾ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ
When the True Guru is merciful, then why should you fear death?
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
When the True Guru is merciful, the body is always at peace.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਮਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ । ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ) ਸਹਮ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away.
ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ ਐਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਹਮ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ ।
What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears?
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਟਿਕਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਡਰ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਮਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God.
ਮਨ ਦੀ ਘਬਰਾਹਟ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸਹਮ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Why should we fear, when fear is dispelled by the Fear of God?
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾ ਲਈ, ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸਹਮਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Through the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect Guru, I recognize God. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਅਸੀ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਰੋਗ ਫ਼ਿਕਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਸਹਮ ਸਹਮ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ।
I was scared, scared to death, when I thought that He was far away.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਜ਼ੱਰੇ ਜ਼ੱਰੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿਆਪਕ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ, (ਉਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ।੧।
But my fear was removed, when I saw that He is pervading everywhere. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰ ਕੇ
Worship and adore the Lotus Feet of the Lord God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੀ (ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ) ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਿਟ ਗਈ ਹੈ ।੨।
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, my anxiety has come to an end. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਘਬਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੀ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰੇਗਾ
Why do you waver, O mortal being? The Creator Lord Himself shall protect you.
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ (ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ) ਆਸਰਾ (ਭੀ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
He who created you, will also give you nourishment. ||1||
