ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਨੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨੇ ਮੋਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜੇ ਉਸ ਸ਼ੂਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਸਦਾ) ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇ
When you are under the power of sexual desire, anger and worldly attachment, or a greedy miser in love with your wealth;
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਉੱਘੇ ਪਾਪ-ਅਪਰਾਧ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ, ਜੇ ਉਹ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਭੈੜਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵ
if you have committed the four great sins and other mistakes; even if you are a murderous fiend
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ,
Without meditation on the Lord of the Universe, all works are in vain,
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਵਾਰਦੇ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੰਜੂਸ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ।
like the wealth of a miser, which lies useless.
ਕਰੋੜਾਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸ਼ੂਮ ਤੇ ਪੱਥਰ-ਦਿਲ ਹਨ,
Many millions are stone-hearted misers.
ਕਈ ਕਰੋੜ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਹਾ ਕੋਰੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਕਦੇ) ਪਸੀਜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ;
Many millions are heartless, with dry, withered souls.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਕਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ; ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਘਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ।
No one knew me, the miserable miser, but now, I have become famous all over the world.
(ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਹੁਣ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਈ ।੨।
Before, no one would even sit with me, but now, all worship my feet. ||2||
ਹੇ ਸ਼ੂਮ! (ਸੁਆਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਾਹ ਖ਼ਰਚਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਤੇਰਾ) ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ
O miser, your body and mind are full of sin.
ਹੇ ਸ਼ੂਮ! ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ । ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਦਾ ਪਾਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, vibrate, meditate on the Lord and Master; He alone can cover your sins. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ਼ੂਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਸ਼ੂਮ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੀ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਰਤਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ)
This bride is the daughter of a wretched miser.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
Abandoning the Lord's servant, she sleeps with the world.
ਸ਼ੂਮ ਧਨ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ
The miser weeps; he has to leave behind the wealth he has gathered.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਧਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The Pandit, the religious scholar, weeps when his learning is gone.
ਸ਼ੂਮ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੋਭ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The miser is totally in love with his wealth.
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
