‘ਪੰਨੀ’ ਜਾਂ ‘ਪਾਪ’ ਨਿਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
Virtue and vice do not come by mere words;
ਤੂੰ ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ ਤਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉੱਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ।
actions repeated, over and over again, are engraved on the soul.
ਆਪੋ-ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਨਿਬੇੜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ,
By their deeds and their actions, they shall be judged.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਪ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਭੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ।
God Himself is True, and True is His Court.
(ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ !) ਮਨੱੁਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣ ਲਈ ਧਰਤੀ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ) ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ (ਕੋਈ) ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The body is the field of karma in this age; whatever you plant, you shall harvest.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਆਖ—ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ , ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੱੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੫।੧।੪।
Says Nanak, the devotees look beautiful in the Court of the Lord; the self-willed manmukhs wander forever in reincarnation. ||5||1||4||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੀ ਹੋਈਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੋ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਤਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
In the love of duality, the soul-bride is ruined; around her neck she wears the noose of Death.
(ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਨਿਯਮ ਹੀ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਲੇਖ ਉਸਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
As you plant, so shall you harvest; your destiny is recorded on your forehead.
(ਮੌਤ ਆਈ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਬੜਾ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਔਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕਾਲੁ ਤੋਂ ਚਿੱਟਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਘਬਰਾਹਟ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਰੰਗ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
She wrings her hands, her body writhes in pain, and she turns from black to white.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਖੇਤ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਵੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
As she has planted, so does she harvest; such is the field of karma.
(ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ) ਲੁਕ ਕੇ (ਮੰਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਨਸ਼ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one's own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions.
(ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦਾ ਨੇਮ ਹੀ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਧਰਮੀ’ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੰਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.
(ਪਰ) ਜੇ ਨਿਰੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ । ਭਾਵੇਂ ਜੀਕਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ) ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਕਰੇ,
If people could gather it in by their own efforts, then everyone would be so lucky.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ । ਸੋ, ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਨਾਹ ਭਟਕੋ) ।੩।
According to the karma of past actions, one's destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky. ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਪਹਿਲੇ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਗੂਰ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਉੱਘੜ ਪਏ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਸਭ ਰਸ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਰਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਭੀ ਹੈ ।
When the seed of the karma of past actions sprouted, I met the Lord; He is both the Enjoyer and the Renunciate.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।੨।੧੧੯।
My darkness was dispelled when I met the Lord. O Nanak, after being asleep for countless incarnations, I have awakened. ||2||2||119||
ਪਰ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਧੁਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ (ਉੱਘੜਦਾ) ਹੈ,
One who has such karma written on his forehead,
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੦।
O Nanak, has the wealth of the Lord in his home. ||10||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
In this age, the Gurmukhs are pure; they remain absorbed in the love of the True Name.
ਪਰ ਕੀਹ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਏ? ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ।੨।
Without the destiny of good karma, nothing can be obtained; what can we say or do? ||2||
(ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਚ ਮੁਚ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ ਕਿ) ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕੰਮ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ ਮੈਂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, (ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਤੇ ਆਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ) ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ । ਭੈੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨ ਮੜ੍ਹਾਂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਬਲ ਆਸਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਠਹਰਾਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ, ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ) ।੨੧।
Dadda: Do not blame anyone else; blame instead your own actions.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਚ ਮੁਚ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ ਕਿ) ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕੰਮ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ ਮੈਂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, (ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਤੇ ਆਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ) ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ । ਭੈੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨ ਮੜ੍ਹਾਂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਬਲ ਆਸਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਠਹਰਾਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ, ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ) ।੨੧।
Whatever I did, for that I have suffered; I do not blame anyone else. ||21||
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਫਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
As are the actions we commit, so are the rewards we receive.
ਪਰ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਣ ।
If it is so pre-ordained, then one obtains the dust of the feet of the Saints.
ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੂਪ (ਇਸੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ।
Abandoning the world of beauty, and beautiful clothes, one must depart.
(ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ) ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਚੰਗੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਆਪ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਹੈ ।
He obtains the rewards of his good and bad deeds.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਮਤਾ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ; ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਮਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਚੁਣ ਕੇ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਕਰ ਵਿਖਾਓ, ਭਾਵ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਮਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
All call You their own, Lord; one who does not own You, is picked up and thrown away.
ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Everyone receives the rewards of his own actions; his account is adjusted accordingly.
ਹੇ ਭੁੱਲੜ ਮੂਰਖ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਦੋਸ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ?
Why do you slander the Lord? You are ignorant and deluded.
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Pain and pleasure are the result of your own actions. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਸ਼ੂ ਪੰਛੀ, ਪੱਥਰ, ਰੁੱਖ (ਆਦਿਕ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
As beasts, birds, stones and trees - their number cannot be known.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਉੱਦਮ ਤਾਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦੇ, ਉਹ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ
As are the seeds he plants, so are the pleasures he enjoys; he receives the consequences of his own actions.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਉਹ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
According to the actions one has committed, so does the mortal become.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He Himself bestows the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.
ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ (ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ) ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਜਕੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ),
By your actions, you have bound yourself.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
You come and go, entangled in Maya. ||1||
ਜਦੋਂ ਨਾ ਚੰਦ ਸੀ ਨਾ ਸੂਰਜ; ਜਦੋਂ ਪਾਣੀ, ਹਵਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੱਤ ਭੀ ਅਜੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ ਹੋਏ,
When there was no moon and no sun, then water and air were blended together.
ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੇਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ; ਤਦੋਂ (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਹਸਤੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ।੨।
When there were no Shaastras and no Vedas, then where did karma come from? ||2||
