ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਲਏ,
The merits of reciting the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas,
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਜੋਗ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੁੰਝਲਾਂ) ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ
knowledge of the science of Yoga, spiritual wisdom and the pleasure of miraculous spiritual powers
(ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਤਾਂ) ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ । ਪਰ ਮਹਾ-ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ
The great men have studied the Shaastras, the Simritees and the Vedas, and they have said this:
ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ, (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ।੧।
Without the Lord's meditation, there is no emancipation, and no one has ever found peace.||1||
ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ; ਵਰਤ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ;
day and night, fasting days and their determination;
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ, ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ—ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ ।੩।
the Shaastras, the Simritees and the Vedas shall pass away. ||3||
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀਲੇ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਆਵਾਗਵਨ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ;
By all sorts of efforts, people are not saved
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਵੀ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ;
- not by studying the Simritees, the Shaastras or the Vedas.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ (ਸਾਧਾਰਨ) ਬਚਨ ਭੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰੌ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
In it is the Glory of God, the Naam, the chanting of Gurbani.
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਆਖੀ ਹੈ ।
The Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas speak of it.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ (ਹੋਰ ਭੀ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ (
I listened to the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, and I pondered over them in so many ways.
(ਤੇ ਇਸੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ) ਅਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ।
The Saving Grace of sinners, the Destroyer of fear, the Ocean of peace, the Formless Lord.
(ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ!) ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਦ ਪੰੁਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਹ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਫਲਾਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਪਾਪ ਹਨ ਫਲਾਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਪੰੁਨ ਹਨ,
The Shaastras and the Vedas speak of sin and virtue;
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਕਦੇ) ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ (ਤੇ ਕਦੇ) ਸੁਰਗ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
they say that mortals are reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again. ||2||
ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ।
He listens to the teachings of the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, but he does not enshrine them in his heart, even for an instant.
ਪਰਾਏ ਧਨ, ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Engrossed in the wealth and women of others, his life passes away uselessly. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਵਾਦ-ਵਿਵਾਦ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਵੇਦਾਂ ਕਤੇਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਧ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ) ਦਿਲ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦਾ ।
The Vedas and the Scriptures are only make-believe, O Siblings of Destiny; they do not relieve the anxiety of the heart.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਲਕ ਭਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਾਓ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਰੱਬ ਦਿੱਸੇਗਾ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਤਰਕ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਏਗੀ) ।੧।
If you will only center yourself on the Lord, even for just a breath, then you shall see the Lord face-to-face, present before you. ||1||
ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ (ਨਿਰੇ) ਪਾਠ ਤਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਵਿਹਾਰ (ਸਮਝੋੋ),
Reading the Vedas is the world's occupation;
ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਲੋਕ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
the Pandits read them, study them and contemplate them.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਰੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ, ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਦ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ ਹਨ ।
One may contemplate the Simritees, Shaastras and Vedas,
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
but only by chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is one saved and carried across. ||3||
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹੀ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪਾਪ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The Simritees and the Shaastras discriminate between good and evil, but they do not know the true essence of reality.
ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਜਾਣੋ ਕਿ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ,
They do not know the true essence of reality without the Guru; they do not know the true essence of reality.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਬਹੁਤ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਦਾ ਹੀ) ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
The great volumes of the Simritees and the Shaastras only extend the extension of attachment to Maya.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਹੀ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He reads the Vedas, but he starts arguments night and day.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He does not remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he is bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death.
(ਹੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਵੀਰੋ!) ਵੇਦਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਕੁਰਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ (ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ) ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠੀਆਂ ਨਾਹ ਆਖੋ । ਝੂਠਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।
Do not say that the Vedas, the Bible and the Koran are false. Those who do not contemplate them are false.
(ਭਲਾ, ਹੇ ਮੁੱਲਾਂ!) ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਉਸ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ) ਮੁਰਗ਼ੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
You say that the One Lord is in all, so why do you kill chickens? ||1||
