ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ 'ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ' ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੋ ਉਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਵਰਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
Amongst all is the Light-You are that Light.
ਉਸ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੇ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਨਣ (ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ) ਹੈ ।
By this Illumination, that Light is radiant within all.
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ !) ਤੂੰ (ਧੱਕੇ ਧੋੜੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਬਦ‑ਅਸੀਸਾਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ
Gathering the wealth of Maya, you earn an evil reputation.
(ਪਰ) ਜਿਸ (ਪਰਵਾਰ) ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਮੇਤ ਹੀ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ
Those whom you work to please shall pass away along with you.
ਰੱਬ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ (ਹਸਤੀ) ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ), ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਕਰਾਂ, ਜੇ ਉਸ ਰੱਬ ਵਰਗਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਵੇ
The Lord is the purest of the pure; only through doubt could there be another.
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! (ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਮਝਣ-ਜੋਗ ਬਣਾਏ । ਤੇ, ਇਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਉਸ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੈ ।੪।੧।
O Kabeer, mercy flows from the Merciful Lord; He alone knows who acts. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ‘ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ’ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ‘ਖ਼ੁਦਾਇ, ਖ਼ੁਦਾਇ’ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Some call Him, 'Raam, Raam', and some call Him, 'Khudaa-i'.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ‘ਗੋਸਾਈਂ’ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ‘ਅੱਲਾ’ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Some serve Him as 'Gusain', others as 'Allaah'. ||1||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਬੜੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
For the sake of Maya, the mortal works very hard.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਨੱਪ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ
He takes the wealth of Maya, and buries it in the ground.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਹੁਣ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਲਈ) ਭਲਾ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਇਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਅਕਲ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
Whatever God does, I accept that as good. This is the sublime wisdom I have obtained from the Holy. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਉਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ (ਤਾਹੀਏਂ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੩।੮
The One God is pervading in all. Gazing upon Him, beholding Him, Nanak blossoms forth in happiness. ||3||8||
ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਤਰਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕੋ੍ਰੜਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਭੀ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹੋਣ ,
Kabeer, the mortal gathers wealth, shell by shell, accumulating thousands and millions.
ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਾਂਸਲੀ ਭੀ ਤੋੜ ਕੇ ਲਾਹ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧੪੪।
But when the time of his departure comes, he takes nothing at all with him. He is even stripped of his loin-cloth. ||144||
