(ਉਸ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਇਹ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ (ਕਿ ਅਸੀ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ) । (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The self-willed manmukhs perform their actions, but they do not understand; they waste away their lives in vain.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ) ਚਾਨਣ (ਕਰਦੀ) ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
Gurbani is the Light to illuminate this world; by His Grace, it comes to abide within the mind. ||1||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਦਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ
When I opened it up and gazed upon the treasures of my father and grandfather,
ਤਦੋਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਭਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ ।੧।
then my mind became very happy. ||1||
ਜਗਤ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਕੋਈ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਜਿਹਾ) ਗੀਤ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਊਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਿਵਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ)
People believe that this is just a song, but it is a meditation on God.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਾਂਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ (ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾਤਾ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਾਂਸ਼ੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤਾਂ ਮਰਨ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਪਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਐਥੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੩।
It is like the instructions given to the dying man at Benares. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਲਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਨ
Gurbani is the jewel, the treasure of devotion.
(ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ) ਗਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਮਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Singing, hearing and acting upon it, one is enraptured. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ (ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਗੁਣਾਂ-ਰੂਪ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਕਾ-ਨੱਕ ਭਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The great ocean is full of the treasures of jewels upon jewels.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Those who are committed to the Word of the Guru's Bani, see them come into their hands.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆ ਵੱਸੀ
The Bani of His Word emanated from the Primal Lord.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈ
It eradicates all anxiety.
ਕੇਵਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੀਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਾਰੋ—
There is One Bani; there is One Guru; there is one Shabad to contemplate.
ਇਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੱਟ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ,
True is the merchandise, and true is the shop; the warehouses are overflowing with jewels.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਰ, (ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ
Listening to the Word of Gurbani, filth is washed off,
(ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
and they naturally enshrine the Lord's Name in their minds. ||1||Pause||
ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਰੱਬੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੌ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਰਾਜ਼ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ ।
The Gurmukh knows the unstruck sound current of the Bani; how rare are those who understand.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੱਚੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਰੰਗ ਕਦੇ ਉਤਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ।੬੫।
Says Nanak, one who speaks the Truth is dyed in the color of Truth, which will never fade away. ||65||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਬਾਣੀ (ਸਿੱਖ ਦਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ । (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ (ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸਾਂਭ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Word, the Bani is Guru, and Guru is the Bani. Within the Bani, the Ambrosial Nectar is contained.
ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ) ਸੇਵਕ ਉਸ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੫।
If His humble servant believes, and acts according to the Words of the Guru's Bani, then the Guru, in person, emancipates him. ||5||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਨ (ਤੇਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ);
Your Glorious Virtues are within You alone, God.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਲੱਖ ਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਹੈਂ ।੧੪।
You Yourself are True, and True is the Word of Your Bani. You Yourself are invisible and unknowable. ||14||
ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖੋ ।
Enshrine the Lord's Name within your heart.
ਸੋ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The Word of the Guru's Bani prevails throughout the world; through this Bani, the Lord's Name is obtained. ||3||
(ਪਰ ਜੋ) ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਚਾਰੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ
The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.
ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਚਾਰੀ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਰਤਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਜਪਿਆ ਹੈ
The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਨਾਲ) ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Hearing the Word of the Guru's Bani, my mind has been softened and saturated with it; my mind has returned to its own home deep within.
ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਉਂ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਨੋ) ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸੁਰ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਮਾਨੋ) ਚਸ਼ਮੇ (ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ) ਦੀ ਧਾਰ ਚਲਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੩।
The Unstruck Melody resonates and resounds there continuously; the stream of nectar trickles down constantly. ||3||
