ਉਹ ਪੂਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਉਕਾਈ-ਹੀਣ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He looks so Beautiful in His Perfect Place. He fulfills the hopes of the hopeless.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਉਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਘਾਟ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ?।੪।੯।
O Nanak, if one obtains the Perfect Lord, how can his virtues decrease? ||4||9||
(ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਸਂਹਸਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਝ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ)
By actions committed under the influence of the three qualities, hope and anxiety are produced.
ਇਹ ਖਿੱਝ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਦੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ), ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
Without the Guru, how can anyone be released from these three qualities? Through intuitive wisdom, we meet with Him and find peace.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਇਕ (ਰਾਜ਼ਕ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚਾਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Contemplate the One Word of the Shabad, and abandon other hopes.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਆਖ—) ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੪।੧੨।
O Nanak, I am forever a sacrifice to the one who beholds, and inspires others to behold Him. ||4||12||
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ, ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਲੰਮੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਉਹ ਆਸਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ
I have no anxiety about dying, and no hope of living.
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਵਿਚ (ਤੇਰੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਹ
You are the Cherisher of all beings; You keep the account of our breaths and morsels of food.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੰਦਰੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ-ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਭੁਇਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਉਂ ਪੁੱਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਖੇਤੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਦੀਨ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹ
So weed out evil, wickedness and corruption; leave these behind, and let your soul meditate on God.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਰਾਖੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕੌਲ ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਰਸ (ਮਾਨੋਂ) ਸਿੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
When chanting, austere meditation and self-discipline become your protectors, then the lotus blossoms forth, and the honey trickles out. ||2||
ਤੇਰਾ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Your Name alone, Lord, saves the world.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ ਇਹੋ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲਏਗਾ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
This is my hope; this is my support. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ (ਸਹੈਤਾ ਦੀ) ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹਨ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ) ਰਾਸ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈਂ
O God, You are the Hope of all. All beings are Yours; You are the Wealth of all.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੜਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਮਾਣ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
O God, none return from You empty-handed; at Your Door, the Gurmukhs are praised and acclaimed.
ਮੈਂ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਆਸ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ
Give up all other hopes, and rely on the One Hope.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Those who serve the True Guru receive a place in the world hereafter. ||1||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ (ਸਹੈਤਾ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਬਣਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਹੈ
Place the hopes of your mind in the One, in whom all have faith.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ !) ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚਤੁਰਾਈਆਂ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪਉ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
Give up all your clever tricks, and grasp the Feet of the Guru. ||1||
ਖੋਟਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ, ਖਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹ
The counterfeit have no place there, but the genuine are placed in His Treasury.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਹਮ ਕੱਢ, ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗੀ, (ਤੇ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ ।੪।
Let your hopes and anxieties depart; thus pollution is washed away. ||4||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਉੱਚ ਆਚਰਣ ਬਣਾਣ ਦਾ ਹਲ ਜੋਅ ਦਿੱਤਾ
I have hooked up the plow of Truth,
ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਆਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਖੇਤ ਵਿਚ) ਬੀਜਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਦਾ ਬੋਹਲ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ ।੨।
and I plant the seed of the Name in hopes that the Lord, in His Generosity, will bestow a bountiful harvest. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਕੱਟੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ ।
Meditating in remembrance on the Name, all bonds are cut away.
(ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ) ਇਹ ਆਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਤੇ ਹੁਣ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੨੭।੩੪।
One's hopes are fulfilled in an instant, chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har. ||4||27||34||
ਹਾੜ ਦਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਤਪਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਹਾੜ ਦੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਤਪਦੇ-ਕਲਪਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ,
The month of Aasaarh seems burning hot, to those who are not close to their Husband Lord.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜਗਤ-ਦੇ-ਸਹਾਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ।
They have forsaken God the Primal Being, the Life of the World, and they have come to rely upon mere mortals.
(ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵੇ, ਜੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਲਏ, ਤਾਂ,
Renounce selfishness, conceit and arrogant pride, and your love for your children and spouse. Abandon your thirsty hopes and desires, and embrace love for the Lord.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Nanak, the True One shall come to dwell in your mind. Through the True Word of the Shabad, you shall be absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਕਈ ਬੰਦੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ) ਬੜੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ,
Some do not think of death; they entertain great hopes.
ਉਹ ਨਿੱਤ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਹਸਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਕਦੇ ਘੜੀ ਸੁਖਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਦੁਖੀ ਦੇ ਦੁਖੀ) ।
They die, and are re-born, and die, over and over again. They are of no use at all!
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ) ਰਿਜ਼ਕ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
Our sustenance is not in the hands of any person.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਬੱਸ, ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ) ਹੋਰ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ।
The hopes of all rest in the One Lord.
ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਗੰਢੇ-ਪੱਲੇ ਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
The birds have no money in their pockets.
ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਰੱੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੀ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
They place their hopes on trees and water.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਚਰਜ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨਿਰੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਚਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਿਗਾਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਪਰ)
renouncing other men's women, he practices celibacy.
ਹਰੀ ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
I am just a fool, Lord; I place my hopes in You! ||2||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਹ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਬਿਖੜੇ ਪੈਂਡੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ (ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਹੈ
O Lord, grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; I place my hopes in You, Lord.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ, ਮੇਰੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Shower me with Your Mercy, and fulfill my longing. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਂ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਜੰਮਣ) ਦੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ (ਨੌ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ) ਕੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
The mother nourishes the fetus in the womb, hoping for a son,
(ਉਹ ਆਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ) ਵੱਡਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਧਨ ਖੱਟ-ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਸੁਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ (ਲਿਆ ਕੇ) ਦੇਵੇਗਾ,
who will grow and earn and give her money to enjoy herself.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਇਹ ਆਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ ।
Within my conscious mind is the constant longing for the Lord. How can I behold the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, Lord?
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਜਿਸ ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
One who loves the Lord knows this; the Lord is very dear to my conscious mind.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ! ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਵਰਤਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਾਲਤ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
Whatever is in my conscious mind, O Lord and Master - that condition of mine is known only to You, Lord.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ! ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਤੇਰੀ (ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇਂ ਤਾਂ) ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ।੨।
Night and day, I chant Your Name, and I find peace. I live by placing my hopes in You, Lord. ||2||
(ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਣ ਦਾ) ਰਾਹ ਦੱਸਿਆ, ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ।
The Guru, the True Guru, the Giver, has shown me the Way; my Lord God came and met me.
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ।੩।
Night and day, I am filled with bliss; by great good fortune, all of the hopes of His humble servant have been fulfilled. ||3||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਏਗੀ,
The thirst of your mind shall be quenched,
ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗੀ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਸਤਾਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ),
and all hopes shall be fulfilled.
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਤੇਰੀ (ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਹ
O Lord of wealth, those who place their hopes in You
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ (ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ) ਦੀ ਆਸ (ਬਣਾਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਰਹਿੰਦੀ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
- nothing of the world can touch them at all. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
Forgetting the Naam, and attached to other tastes,
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਆਸ ਸਿਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ।੩।
no desires are fulfilled. ||3||
ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਤੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ
One who is attuned to the Lord, is not haunted by the fear of death.
ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ।੨।
One who is attuned to the Lord, sees all his hopes fulfilled. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਤੁਸੀ ਇਕ ਰਾਤ (ਕਿਤੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਣੇ ਵਾਂਗ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਏ ਹੋ ਪਰ ਇਥੇ ਕਈ ਜੁਗ ਜੀਊਂਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ।
You have come as a guest for one short night, and yet you hope to live for many ages.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਇਹ ਘਰ ਮਹਲ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ—ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਭ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੈ (ਸਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਬਾਹੁੰਦਾ) ।੧।
Households, mansions and wealth - whatever is seen, is like the shade of a tree. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸੁਆਦ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ) ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਹੈਂ ।
You are my delight, You are my praise. You are my beauty, You are my love.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਓਟ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ ।੧।
O God, You are my hope and support. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਮਲੀਨ) ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Dispelling my doubts and fears, the Guru has rid me of hatred.
ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭੀ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ।੪।
The Guru has fulfilled the desires of my mind. ||4||
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਭੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਢੱਠੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ) ।
Whoever is seen, is driven by hope and despair,
ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਕੋ੍ਰਧ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਮਾਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰੇਹ (ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ) ।
by sexual desire, anger, corruption, hunger and thirst.
ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਲੱਛਮੀ-ਪਤੀ ਹੈਂ (ਤੈਥੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜ ਕੇ) ਅਸੀ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ, (ਦੱਸ,) ਅਸੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਲੀਏ?
The One Lord, the Architect of Destiny, is the Master of the Goddess of Wealth; how can I, in my sadness, meet You?
(ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਜੇਹੜੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ) ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਆਪਣਾ) ਸਿਰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਚਰਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਰੱਖਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
My hands serve You, and my head is at Your Feet. My mind, dishonored, yearns for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
(ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੱੁਖਣਾ ਸੱੁਖਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ (ਕਿ) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ,
O my companions, I yearn for Him continually; I invoke His Blessings, and pray that God may fulfill my hopes.
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਲਈ ਉਤਾਵਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰੇ ਥਾਂ ਵੇਖਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ।
I thirst for His Feet, and I long for the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; I look for Him everywhere.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ, ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ (ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰ ਜਾਇਗਾ (ਫਿਰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ?)
See, that even by calculating and scheming in their minds, people must surely depart in the end.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਆਸਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਰੋਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਨਾਸ-ਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
Hopes and desires for transitory things are erased for the Gurmukh; O Nanak, the Name alone brings true health. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ (ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ) ਦੀ ਆਸ ਲਾਹ ਦੇ ।
O my soul, grasp the Support of the One Lord; give up your hopes in others.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, your affairs shall be resolved. ||1||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਇਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਉਤੇ ਆਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ;
The God-conscious being centers his hopes on the One alone.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ (ਦੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ) ਦਾ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।
The God-conscious being shall never perish.
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਸਾਂ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
He may place his hopes on a large army of men,
(ਪਰ) ਪਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ।
but he shall vanish in an instant.
ਹੇ ਭਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੋ! ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਛੱਡੋ ਤੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੋ; ਕੇਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੋ ।
Give up your cleverness, good people - remember the Lord God, your King!
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਦੁੱਖ ਵਹਮ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Enshrine in your heart, your hopes in the One Lord. O Nanak, your pain, doubt and fear shall depart. ||1||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਰੱਖੋ,
Keep faith in the One Lord within your mind.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਣਗੇ ।੧।
All disease, O Nanak, shall then be dispelled. ||1||
(ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ) ਡਰ ਉੱਡ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਸ ਪੁੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
Your fear shall be dispelled, and your hopes shall be fulfilled.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
By devotional worship and loving adoration, your soul shall be enlightened.
ਜੋ) ਸੇਵਕ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
The Lord's humble servant is committed to His Name.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਕਦੇ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।
His hopes do not go in vain.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਨਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ (ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਰਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ,
Abandon the waves of fleeting desire,
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਮੰਗ ।
and pray for the dust of the feet of the Saints.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ) ਤੋਂ ਹੀ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Place your hopes in Him, for salvation and peace; all things come from Him.
ਮੈਂ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਕੁਟਾਂ ਤੇ ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਫਿਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ (ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਰਾਖਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
I wandered around the four corners of the world and in the ten directions, but I saw nothing except Him.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਭਾਰੇ ਨਰਕਾਂ (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਕੱਟ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
So many are being drowned in emotional attachment and doubt; they dwell in the most horrible hell.
(ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ (ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੀ) ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ ।੩।
Please bless me with Your Mercy, God, and save me! Nanak places his hopes in You. ||3||
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਖਾਣ ਤੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ
You have such high hopes of eating and living
(ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਕਿ) ਮੇਰਾ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਸਾਹ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ (ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ) ।੨।
- your breaths and morsels of food are already counted! ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਿੱਤਰ ਦੀ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ, ਭਰਾ ਦੀ—ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਆਸ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ।
Do not place your hopes in friends, children and siblings.
ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ, ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਦੀ—ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਪਰਾਈ ਆਸ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ।
Do not place your hopes in kings or the business of others.
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! (ਸਿਆਲ ਦੀਆਂ) ਲੰਮੀਆਂ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਸਉਂ ਸਉਂ ਕੇ) ਪਾਸੇ ਧੁਖ ਉੱਠਦੇ ਹਨ ,
Fareed, the nights are long, and my sides are aching in pain.
ਸੋ, ਜੋ ਲੋਕ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਤੱਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ ਹੈ, (ਆਸ ਇਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਰੱਖੋ) ।੨੧।
Cursed are the lives of those who place their hopes in others. ||21||
