ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਛੋਹ ਨਾਲ) ਜੂਠਾ ਹੋ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਜੂਠ ਹੀ ਜੂਠ ਹੈ (ਸਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਹੀ ਦੌੜਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ (ਖਾਣ ਦੇ ਚਸਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਜੂਠੀ ਹੋਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹ
If the mind is polluted, then the body is polluted, and the tongue is polluted as well.
ਝੂਠੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਅਜੇਹਾ ਜੀਵ (ਕਿਸੇ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਸੁੱਚ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸੁੱਚਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ
With false mouths, people speak falsehood. How can they be made pure?
(ਇਹ ਸਰੇਵੜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਹਿੰਸਾ ਦੇ ਵਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ) ਸਿਰ (ਦੇ ਵਾਲ) ਪੁਟਾ ਕੇ (ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਜੂਆਂ ਨਾ ਪੈ ਜਾਣ) ਮੈਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੂਠੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਮੰਗ ਮੰਗ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
They pluck the hair out of their heads, and drink in filthy water; they beg endlessly and eat the garbage which others have thrown away.
(ਆਪਣੇ) ਪਖ਼ਾਨੇ ਨੂੰ ਫੋਲ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਗੰਦੀ) ਹਵਾੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਤੋਂ) ਸੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਤਦੇ) ।
They spread manure, they suck in rotting smells, and they are afraid of clean water.
ਜੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਈਏ ਤਾਂ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਰਚ-ਮਿਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Fear departs, and one savors the Ambrosial Nectar, imbued with the Love of the Formless Lord.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਮਲੀਨਤਾ—ਇਹ ਸਭੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Pain, poverty and impurity are removed, with the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਹ ਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ),
As a woman has her periods, month after month,
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਝੂਠੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
so does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਦੇਵ-ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਈਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ) ਧੋਵੇ,
If one were to wash his heart inwardly, like the stone idol which is washed on the outside,
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਸੁੱਧ-ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
his filth would be removed, his soul would be cleansed, and he would be liberated when he departs. ||2||
ਜਿੱਥੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾ ਸਕਾਂ (ਤਾਂ ਜੁ ਪੂਰੀ ਸੁੱਚ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੇ)? ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The mother is impure, and the father is impure. The fruit they produce is impure.
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਭੀ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਅਪਵਿੱਤਰ, ਜੋ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਅਪਵਿੱਤਰ; ਬਦ-ਨਸੀਬ ਜੀਵ ਅਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
Impure they come, and impure they go. The unfortunate ones die in impurity. ||1||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਜੀਭ ਮੈਲੀ, ਬਚਨ ਭੀ ਮਾੜੇ, ਕੰਨ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਅਪਵਿੱਤਰ,
The tongue is impure, and its speech is impure. The eyes and ears are totally impure.
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ) ਕਾਮ-ਚੇਸ਼ਟਾ (ਐਸੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ) ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ । ਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ-ਪੁਣੇ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਸੜੇ ਹੋਏ! (ਦੱਸ, ਸੁੱਚੀ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਹੋਈ?) ।੨।
The impurity of the sexual organs does not depart; the Brahmin is burnt by the fire. ||2||
ਅੱਗ ਜੂਠੀ, ਪਾਣੀ ਜੂਠਾ, ਪਕਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਭੀ ਜੂਠੀ, ਕੜਛੀ ਜੂਠੀ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ (ਭਾਜੀ ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਰਤਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
The fire is impure, and the water is impure. The place where you sit and cook is impure.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Impure is the ladle which serves the food. Impure is the one who sits down to eat it. ||3||
ਗੋਹਾ ਜੂਠਾ, ਚੌਕਾ ਜੂਠਾ, ਜੂਠੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਚੌਕੇ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਪਾਈਆਂ ਲਕੀਰਾਂ ।
Impure is the cow dung, and impure is the kitchen square. Impure are the lines that mark it off.
ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ—ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਆ ਗਈ ਹੈ ।੪।੧।੭।
Says Kabeer, they alone are pure, who have obtained pure understanding. ||4||1||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੇ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਉੱਚਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ (ਵਧਦਾ-ਫੁਲਦਾ) ।
O Nanak, the one who has no Guru, has no redeeming virtues at all.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੂੰਹ ਮੋੜੀ ਰੱਖੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮੂੰਹ (ਨਿੰਦਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਗੰਦੀ ਵਾਦੀ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ) ਅਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Impurity comes from turning one's face away from God. ||1||
ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਜਨਮ (ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ) ਗਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਐਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਦੇ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ ਜਾਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾ ਸਕਣ;
They have no status, no honor, and no good karma. They waste away their lives in vain.
ਇਹ ਕੁਜਾਤੀ ਲੋਕ ਮਨੋਂ ਭੀ ਜੂਠੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Their minds are false and impure; that which they eat is impure and defiled.
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ ।
If someone is false within his own self, then how can he be pure?
। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
How rare are those who wash with the Shabad.
