ਮੈਂ ਤੀਰਥ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਤਦ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਂ ਜੇ ਇਉਂ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ, ਪਰ ਜੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਤੀਰਥ ਉੱਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੀਹ ਖੱਟਾਂਗਾ ?
If I am pleasing to Him, then that is my pilgrimage and cleansing bath. Without pleasing Him, what good are ritual cleansings?
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਜਿਤਨੀ ਭੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, (ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਕੋਈ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈ ਸਕਦਾ।
I gaze upon all the created beings: without the karma of good actions, what are they given to receive?
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ (ਅਠਾਹਠ) ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
Contemplation of the Guru is one's bathing at holy places of pilgrimage.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਮੰਦਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
Worship and adoration within is the Lord's dwelling.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਲੋਕ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਤੇ, ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਭੌਂ ਕੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Even if one takes cleansing baths at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and wanders over the whole planet,
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹੋਰ ਭੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਪਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
and performs all the rituals of purification day and night, still, without the True Guru, there is only darkness. ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਥਿਤ ਤੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ।
The Tenth Day: Meditate on the Naam, give to charity, and purify yourself.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ।
Night and day, bathe in spiritual wisdom and the Glorious Virtues of the True Lord.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਭੀ) ਕਰੇ,
Someone may bathe at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage,
ਜੇ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ,
and worship the twelve Shiva-lingam stones,
ਉਸ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਾਂ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਉਤੋਂ ਉਤੋਂ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ) ਬੋਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਸਗੋਂ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਭੀ ਨਿਰੀ ਠੱਗੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The self-willed manmukh is enticed by his desires for Maya; his words are useless and empty.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਨਿਰੀ ਠੱਗੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਭੀ ਫੋਕਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The ritual cleansings of the sinner are fradulent; his rituals and decorations are useless and empty. ||2||
